Perhaps love always carries an element of contingency (our attraction to a particular person can be arbitrary and inexplicable), and a sense of necessity (we find that we cannot imagine life without them). But contingency and chance mean something different for queer subjects. In a heteronormative culture, heterosexuality claims to be necessary (it must be), whereas homosexuality not only could be otherwise, but perhaps it should be otherwise, and probably it should not be at all. This book outlines why and how issues of chance and contingency should matter to queer theory and queer literary studies. Combining psychoanalytic, queer, and narrative theories, Chances Are considers nineteenth- and twentieth-century American literary texts that formally or thematically involve contingencies of their own, including narrative coincidences and accidents, the role of luck in notions of race and class, and efforts to imagine queer hermeneutic methods that make space for contingency. We want to know why we exist, we want to understand the world and its secrets, and we want to know our place in the world. Concepts like religion and philosophy are concerned with those questions and try to provide answers to them. Nevertheless, there are still no satisfying explanations. This is due to the fact that “our actual lived experience has no form or unity in itself, but is full of contingent rubble, accident, and unsystematized detail which may resist our attempts at unity” (Antonaccio & Schweiker, Human Goodness 111). As our world is contingent, it cannot be completely understood. Consequently, we should accept its contingency instead of denying it by trying to find an explanation to everything. The stress ratio between contingency and necessity is also the theme of Iris Murdoch’s first novel Under the Net. Throughout the novel, the protagonist Jake Donaghue searches for his own identity and for a master theory which is able to explain the world (cf. Porter, Leitmotiv 379). In the end, he realizes that he has to change his attitude towards contingency. In the following, I will try to find reasons for the change of Jake’s attitude, and I will describe the consequences of this change. In order to be able to do this, I will first provide a definition of the term ‘contingency’ and place it in the context of philosophy in chapter 2. Afterwards, I will explain some essential aspects of contingency in the novel in chapter 3. In chapter 4, I will have a look at Jake’s changing attitude towards contingency in the course of the novel in order to, finally, be able to find reasons for the change and to describe its consequences in chapter 5 and 6.

Book excerpt: Contingencies are unexpected crises or events that cause a major threat to the safety, security and well-being of a certain population. This research effort builds upon the work on contingency logistics reliability models by Miman (2008) who extended the preliminary work conducted by Thomas (2004) that provides the modeling approach which takes a mission success orientation and focuses on the ability to recover from or prevent a contingency logistics failure. Miman (2008) proposes the sustainability model of a contingency logistics network using the concept of selective maintenance. This problem, once formulated, is a non-convex, non-linear, non-separable, multi-dimensional, discrete knapsack problem. These problems are known to be NP hard. Therefore, one needs to explore heuristic solutions in search of robust and effective solution approaches. He developed a memetic algorithm, GAFTS, and proposed this for identifying the best set of maintenance actions to sustain the contingency logistics network. Besides, he used Physical Programming, a multi criteria optimization procedure, to exploit a network manager’s preference toward the numerous criteria (reliability, cost, time, resource utilization etc...) judiciously. This research effort continues the exploration of heuristic techniques for the sustainability model developed by Miman (2008) and develops a hybrid heuristics technique, EDGASA, incooperating simulating annealing (SA) procedure with genetic algorithm (GA). Comparisons of EDGASA with GA and SA reveal that it outperforms in terms of average reliability, best reliability and worst reliability found at an expense of increased solution time. One of the contributions of this study is a multi-objective modeling approach developed based on utopia distance that aims at minimizing the weighted distance between a solution to the ideal point that could be achieved. The study fills some of the voids in the contingency logistics networks’ solution and modeling and highlights potential studies by applying the hybrid heuristic developed as well as multiobjective modeling approach proposed to other problems.

Each chapter aligns one of Dickens's later novels with a work of contemporary literature and a post structuralist theoretical text. Working from the premise of Derrida's contre, the relationship developed between these texts is not so much intertextual as countertextual: each text re-enacts the procedures of its counterparts, simultaneously rearticulating and interrogating their status. In this triangular mode of reading, the contact zone between countertexts becomes the site on which new readings are generated, readings that use the ambivalent relationship between writings to mark an analogous self-difference within writing itself. This productive self difference is described as a “negotiation” of the contradictory drives of signification, a strategic management of the masterly and the contingent. This book argues that Dickens's texts perform their negotiations in an acutely strenuous manner, amplifying instability and exposing the means of literary production. This lack of discipline proves contagious as the reader re enacts the text's spasmodic shifts between mastery and contingency. As surrogate Dickensian readers in the countertextual economy, the contemporary novel and post structuralist theory also display this instability an effect which allows this study to develop not only a theory of poetics but a poetics of theory. This dramatic self difference is not simply restricted to writing, however. In later chapters, this study examines how racial and gender identities are also marked by ambivalence, and how their instability is exacerbated after contact with a Dickensian contre. In conclusion, the work is itself submitted to a ‘Dickensian’ reading. The author examines how the study’s own manoeuvres have been exposed through contact with many of the texts analysed within it, and how this dialogue deconstructs the ideal of academic writing.
