Book excerpt: The works collected in this volume have profoundly shaped the history of criticism in the Western world: they created much of the terminology still in use today and formulated enduring questions about the nature and function of literature. In Ion, Plato examines the god-like power of poets to evoke feelings such as pleasure or fear, yet he went on to attack this manipulation of emotions and banished poets from his ideal Republic. Aristotle defends the value of art in his Poetics, and his analysis of tragedy has influenced generations of critics from the Renaissance onwards. In the Art of Poetry, Horace promotes a style of poetic craftsmanship rooted in wisdom, ethical insight and decorum, while Longinus' On the Sublime explores the nature of inspiration in poetry and prose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literary Reviews and Criticisms Such is the character of the book. And as it is now one of the most convenient sources for the study of this particular product, it is too bad that the text, which is virtually Arber's with the insertion of some additional matter, Should not have been thoroughly revised. In some Of the additions, for instance, an Old Spelling is retained after the present fashion, while in others it has suffered modernisation. Sometimes the syllabic -ed is indicated, some times not. The punctuation too ought to have been thoroughly overhauled. And it is to be wished that some one had taken the trouble to provide the Diana with a Specification of Constable's contributions. But these are minor matters after all and need not detain us. The most noteworthy part of the whole performance is the general introduction by Mr. Sidney Lee, who undertakes to assign the Elizabethan love-sonnet to its proper niche in the gallery of comparative literature. In order to indicate intelligibly what he has done, however, it will be necessary to explain briefly the nature of the collection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Study and Stage: A Year-Book of Criticism In one respect, the book may claim a certain origin; ality. I am not aware that any one hitherto has dared to treat the English acted drama as literature, and to place literary and dramatic criticisms not only on the same plane, but absolutely in the same rank, shoulder to shoulder. I trust the reader will not find that the variety thus imparted to my subject - matter amounts to a dis tressing heterogeneity. Perhaps the sagacious reviewer may discern in this division of my interests a source of weak ness, and decide that I write about the drama like a literary critic and about literature like a dramatic critic. If he can forgive me for taking the jibe out of his mouth, he may perhaps admit, on reflection, that it is no bad thing for a critic here and there to bring with him to the theatre some of the standards of the study, and to carry back to the study some of that rapidity of perception and penetration which is, or ought to be, engendered by the habit of making snapshot records of the passing pageant of the stage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Literary Passions, Criticism and Fiction The papers, as they appeared from month to month, were not the product of those unities of time and place which were the happy conditioning of My Literary Passions. They could not have been written in quite so many places as times, but they enjoyed a comparable variety of origin. Beginning in Boston, they were continued in a Boston suburb, on the shores of Lake George, in a Western New York health resort, in Buffalo, in Nahant; once, twice, and thrice in New York, with reversions to Boston, and summer excur sions to the hills and waters of New England, until it seemed that their author had at last said his say, and he voluntarily lapsed into silence with the applause of friends and enemies alike. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Modern Book of Criticism Criticism is no isolated thing; it is not an amusement of elegant triflers; it is not - as many people think - a sport of aloof academicians. It is as present as the air, as concrete as bread, and far more necessary to human civilization than steam or petrol. The proverbial Philistine who refuses to see a play that will not make him laugh practices criticism of the most formidable kind and reveals in that practice all he is. For consider the implications of his critical reaction: the utter lack of humane sympathies, the stum of all gentler influences, the hard determination to give no part of his earnings for anything that neither stirs his senses nor flatters his consciousness of superiority. Consider, fur thermore, the forces in his civilization that have made him what he is: the insistence on mechanical values, the steely ferocities of business competition, the militant subordination of all the elements of life to one coarse and impoverishing kind of success. I could go further and point out how this Philistine's lack of a subtle shame in his attitude, indeed his brazen pride in it, demonstrates the failure on the part of the intellectuals of his age and country to create a cultural atmosphere in which he would be forced, despite himself, into an uneasy awareness of the poverty of his own soul. And I could proceed to an analysis of the impotence of these intellectuals. Or else, I could select another critical reaction of our average business man: his moral indignation over a literary or dramatic treatment of sex, and I could readily derive that from his own furtive grossness or em bittered self-repression. But it is already clear that the humblest critical remark made by a random man or woman in any crowd you please has implications that can sear the soul or cry to heaven.
