Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "David Blau has chosen seven economists to write chapters that review the emerging economic literature on the supply of child care, parental demand for care, child care cost and quality, and to discuss the implications of these analyses for public policy. The book succeeds in presenting that research in understandable terms to policy makers and serves economists as a useful review of the child care literature....provides an excellent case study of the value of economic analysis of public policy issues." —Arleen Leibowitz, Journal of Economic Literature "There is no doubt this is a timely book....The authors of this volume have succeeded in presenting the economic material in a nontechnical manner that makes this book an excellent introduction to the role of economics in public policy analysis, and specifically child care policy....the most comprehensive introduction currently available." —Cori Rattelman, Industrial and Labor Relations Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes an unpublished manuscript and selected portions of five seminars by Harold Garfinkel – the founder of ethnomethodology – on the topic of practices in the natural sciences and mathematics. The volume provides a coherent and sustained account of his program for the study of ordinary and specialized social actions. Presenting broader theoretical and methodological initiatives, as well as discussions and summaries of exemplary studies of social phenomena within and beyond the sciences, this work dates to the period in the 1980s during which the field of Science and Technology Studies was taking shape, with ethnomethodological studies of scientific practice forming a major part of its development at the time. Aside from their historical importance, the manuscript and seminars present a distinctive perspective on the natural and social sciences that remains highly original and pertinent to research on science, social science, and everyday life today. Offering critical insights and proposals relating to developments in Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis, this volume will appeal to scholars of Sociology and Science and Technology Studies with interests in the work of Garfinkel. Download or read book The Handbook of Child and Elder Care Resources written by and published by U.S. Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1997 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 700,000 Federal employees have children under age 13; at least an equal number of Federal employees are estimated to have concerns about their elderly parents and relatives. This handbook was developed primarily to put government employees in touch with the many free resource organizations and agencies around the country that can help them meet their dependent care needs. It also provides practical tips on how to find quality child care, information about federal personnel programs that can help to balance work and family responsibilities, and places to call for further information on related topics, such as obtaining financial assistance. The handbook is divided into three parts: Child Care, Elder Care, and Work and Family Programs. Part I suggests practical steps to take in finding quality child care, including questions to ask during the initial telephone screening and a checklist of things to observe when visiting child care centers or homes. It also provides a directory of resource and referral services around the country, and a list of federal and national organizations that can help parents learn about quality child care. Part II explains a variety of community resources that are offered around the country to help older adults function independently, and discusses housing options, financial and medical considerations, nursing homes, and home health care agencies. It also provides a short summary of the services provided by federal and national organizations which can help employees meet their elder care needs. The last part provides information on the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM's) Work and Family Program Center and government-wide personnel flexibility; and on programs, policies, and leave options to help employees balance their work and family demands. Book excerpt: Abstract: The results of the National Day Care Supply Study are reported in this companion to the final report of the National Day Care Study conducted for the Department of Health, Education and Welfare between 1974 and 1978. With the use of many tables the study is described and many aspects of day care centers in the 50 states and the District of Columbia are explored. Data from 3,167 day care centers were collected by telephone survey and analyzed. More than 1/6 of the centers in the U.S. participated in the survey: Part 1 gives an overview of the study, a profile of center characteristics, and day care regulations and compliance. Part 2 contains detailed statistical tables. Data on centers' general characteristics are reported: sponsorship, years in operation, capacity, enrollment, and operating schedules. Data on the children and their families are presented. The services provided to the children, information on staff, financial data, and the degree of compliance with state & federal regulations are all described in the tables. The appendices present in detail the methodology, reliability, and instrument used in the study. (as).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the U.S. economy continues to falter and families face ongoing wage stagnation and widening income inequalities, there is an urgent need for a better, integrated approach to child care. This accessible, up-to-date account of the chronic issues plaguing child care reform offers viable solutions drawn from a model state child care system in the state of North Carolina. Original data from interdisciplinary research illustrates the complex landscape of U.S. child care, as well as the ambiguous relationship society has with the sobering statistic that 64% of women with children under six are employed and in need of reliable, high-quality care of their young children. Book Features: The history and demographics of U.S. child care policy.Analysis of several persistent forces impeding the emergence of a national child care system.Contemporary ideas about motherhood, employment, and providing child care for pay.An extensive review of research on child care and child development.Recommendations focusing on policy integration and workforce development. “In The States of Child Care, Sara Gable gives voice to the perspectives of parents, practitioners, and advocates to help readers deepen their understanding of our past, what needs to change in the present, and what strategies they can use to make progress now.” —From the Foreword by Marcy Whitebook, Director, Center for the Study of Child Care Employment, Berkeley, CA Sara Gable is an associate professor and extension specialist in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology at the University of Missouri.
