Book excerpt: Auckland's North Shore has long been known as a place apart, a place of leisure known for its beautiful beaches and relaxed lifestyle. Until the opening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge in 1959, it was viewed by many city-siders as a holiday destination, but the past 40 years have seen it transformed into a vital city in its own right. Yet its European origins go back to the earliest days of the settlement of Auckland. This lively history tells the story of the Shore's development from Maori and early contact times up to local body amalgamation and the formation of the first 'North Shore City' in 1989. It covers themes such as transport, industry, population growth and settlement patterns, arts and architecture, religion and sport. Presented in a coffee-table format, it is fully illustrated with historic photographs and paintings which will fascinate those familiar with the Shore as it is now. The book will be launched during the city's 2010 Heritage Week festival, in time to celebrate the city before Supercity amalgamation.

Book excerpt: It is easy to understand why Auckland has the largest population of any region in the country. It is blessed with two very sheltered harbours and probably the mildest climate in New Zealand. Auckland has become the commercial capital of New Zealand, but this hasn't happened without the innovation and initiatives provided by the engineering profession. Engineers have been charged with making things, building our infrastructure and keeping it going in the face of rapidly increasing population growth. The basics like water supply, drainage and power supplies are essential, as are the harbour facilities, telecommunications, roads, railways, bridges and airports. The development of these facilities since 1840, the difficulties, political controversies and heartbreaks are described in this book by engineers who have been responsible for building our many and varied facilities.

Download or read book A Brief History of Auckland's Urban Form written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "‘A brief history of Auckland’s urban form’ outlines the development of Auckland’s urban form, from early colonial settlement to the modern Auckland metropolis. It is challenging to encapsulate the growth of a city this size in 26 pages, and so the report aims to capture the key relevant drivers behind the growth in suburbs - including infrastructure provision, State housing and in later decades, major planning decisions. A main feature of this report is the series of ‘growth maps’. The report is chronological in nature, and each section (with the exception of two time periods 1880-1899 and 1990-1999) includes a map that shows growth over time in the built-up areas, as well as the development of the rail and motorway systems. These maps replicate, and continue, a series of maps first included in a 1967 article by G. T. Bloomfield on ‘The Growth of Auckland 1840- 1966’."--ARC website.

Book Synopsis Guide to the Criminal Prisons of Nineteenth-Century England by : Rosalind Crone
Download or read book Guide to the Criminal Prisons of Nineteenth-Century England written by Rosalind Crone and published by London School of Economics and Political Science. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 1515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The penal system in nineteenth-century England was incredibly complicated. It comprised two types of prison: convict prisons and local prisons. While convict prisons were under the direct control of the Home Office, local prisons were, until the 1877 Prison Act, managed by a whole host of different local authorities, from counties and boroughs to liberties and even cathedrals. Moreover, included among convict prisons were penitentiaries, public works prisons and prison hulks (also known as floating prisons), while local prisons included gaols, bridewells and lock-ups. This complexity has led to a raft of studies of individual institutions. Nevertheless, big gaps in our knowledge remain. Simply put, we don't even know how many prisons existed in nineteenth-century England. This Guide to the Criminal Prisons of Nineteenth-Century England recovers much of that lost landscape. It contains critical information about operational dates, locations, jurisdictions, population statistics, appearances in primary and secondary sources and lists of surviving archives for 844 English prisons--including local prisons (419), convict prisons (17), prison hulks (30) and lock-ups (378)--used to confine those accused and convicted of crime in the period 1800-1899. Furthermore, through analysis of the accumulated data, the book challenges several important assumptions on the emergence of the modern prison in Britain. It also draws attention to previously unexplored patterns in the preservation and management of penal records.
