Download or read book Forbidden Fruit written by Betty DeRamus and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2005-02 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forbidden Fruit is a collection of fascinating, largely untold stories of ordinary men and women who took extraordinary measures, risking life and limb to be together. It's the story of couples who faced mobs, bloodhounds, bounty hunters, and bullets to defy the system that allowed slave masters to breed and sell people like cattle. Some broke the taboo against interracial marriage, putting their lives in the most severe peril. In one remarkable story, a Georgia couple who fled slavery wearing multiple disguises sailed for England with bounty hunters and federal troops on their trail. A fugitive slave from Virginia spent seventeen arduous years searching for his wife. A Missouri slave fell in love with his white Mormon neighbor and escaped to Canada to be with her, putting pepper in his shoes to throw dogs off the scent at night and hiding in trees by day. Betty DeRamus gleaned these amazing stories from descendants of runaway slave couples, unpublished memoirs, Civil War records, books, magazines, and dozens of previously untapped sources. Beautifully and compassionately written, this important book reveals a chapter of American history that is shameful but is about triumph as well as torture, achievement as well as degradation, and indomitable love as well as hate.
Book Synopsis Georgia's Confederate Soldiers who Died as Prisoners of War 1861-1865 by : James E. Stallings
Download or read book Georgia's Confederate Soldiers who Died as Prisoners of War 1861-1865 written by James E. Stallings and published by J.E. Stallings Sr.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Released just this year, this fascinating recount and examination of life and survival in United States Prison Camps endured by Confederate Soldiers, this book gives rich enhancement of one's understanding of our nation's civil war history. As the title suggests, James Stallings takes the angle of focusing genealogical prison records to his home state of Georgia. However, the letters and recounts mentioned in this book, along with its historical aspects of the prisons themselves, allows the reader an excellent cross-section of Confederate Prisoners of War that suffered and died (as did their fellow countrymen in Confederate camps) in P.O.W. camps set up by the United States Army.

This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Descendants of Thomas William Holland and Milley Boyett compiles information from many sources None of the records in my book have been imported from online histories. All of them have been entered by me and most have been verified not once, but several times. When I entered names, dates and other information from book sources, I attempted to verify the data with census, vital records or another source. An Old Holland Family Record Book that was originally owned by Thomas William Holland is the "Key" that opened research for this book. Living relatives and fellow researchers provided me with priceless information that I supported by vital statistics, census records, deeds and wills.
Book Synopsis Stuart's Tarheels by : Chris J. Hartley
Download or read book Stuart's Tarheels written by Chris J. Hartley and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-08-10 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Confederate Major General J.E.B. Stuart said "North Carolina has done nobly in this army," he had one of his own men to thank: Brigadier General James Byron Gordon. A protege of Stuart, Gordon was the consummate nineteenth-century landowner, politician, and businessman. Despite a lack of military training, he rose rapidly through the ranks and, as the commander of all North Carolina cavalrymen in the Army of Northern Virginia, he helped bring unparalleled success to Stuart's famed Confederate cavalry. This updated biography, originally published in 1996, chronicles Gordon's early life and military career and, through his men, takes a fresh look at the vaunted Army of Northern Virginia--its battles, controversies, and troops. This second edition includes additional source material that has come to light and a roster of Gordon's 1st North Carolina Cavalry.
