Book excerpt: Lisek's Great Adventure is a story about a young half beagle, half pug dog named Lisek (pronounced Lee-seck) that was taken in and loved, for years, by a young boy and his parents. It's a story from this little dog's perspective, expressing her joy and how much friendship can be had between a child and his first pet. As for the dog's name, it was chosen by the author when he visited Poland, met a dog named Lisek, and liked that it translated into "Little Fox". When the author came back to California and got his own dog, he used that name. This story which is beautifully illustrated by Jonine Latar, is designed to teach children how fun it can be to have an animal and the responsibility that comes with it. It's also meant to bring a smile to adults who remember the happiness they experienced with their first pet. This book was conceptualized by Paul when he was just 12 years old and finally came to, after he turned 28. The author is proud to have finally put together the story he's had on his mind for 16 years. And his words to the reader, are, "if you have an idea or a passion, run with it and make it happen...don't wait."

This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first history of YIVO, the original center for Yiddish scholarship. Founded by a group of Eastern European intellectuals after World War I, YIVO became both the apex of secular Yiddish culture and the premier institution of Diaspora Nationalism, which fought for Jewish rights throughout the world at a time of rising anti-Semitism. From its headquarters in Vilna, Lithuania, YIVO tried to balance scholarly objectivity with its commitment to the Jewish masses. Using newly recovered documents that were believed destroyed by Hitler and Stalin, Cecile Esther Kuznitz tells for the first time the compelling story of how these scholars built a world-renowned institution despite dire poverty and anti-Semitism. She raises new questions about the relationship between Jewish cultural and political work, and analyzes how nationalism arises outside of state power.

Book excerpt: Yiddish literature is commonly perceived as a gendered cultural space, as neatly summarised by the line 'Story books for women, holy books for men' in the opening scene of the popular movie Yentl. Yet it is well known that the traditional dichotomy oversimplifies the issue of gender in Yiddish literature. This volume seeks to give a more multi-faceted picture of the topic, investigating the representation of gender in Yiddish literary works, the gendered self-representation of Yiddish authors, and the (implied) expectations with respect to the gender of the Yiddish target readership. It also considers debates and reflections about gender in Yiddish literary criticism and journalism, exploring the participation and positioning of Yiddish cultural critics in this discourse.

Book excerpt: The saga of the legendary Courtney family continues in this fourteenth installment in Wilbur Smith’s bestselling series—the sequel to 2009’s Assegai—a thrilling tale of espionage, adventure, and danger, set in Africa and spanning from the Great War’s end to the dark days of World War II. As a member of the remarkable Courtney family, Leon Courtney knows how quickly fortunes can be won and lost. Over the course of more than two centuries, generations of his family have risen and fallen with the tides of history. Leon, too, has experienced his own share of triumph and pain. In the wake of his beloved wife’s death, the renowned big-game hunter is raising his young daughter, Saffron, alone in colonial Kenya. In the 1920s, the continent of Africa is a dangerous place. As Leon attempts to navigate the murky political waters of this most exquisitely beautiful and wildest of lands, his daughter grows into an independent and headstrong young woman bound for a far different life in Britain, as a student at Oxford. But over the course of more than two decades, spies, traitors, and adventurers will dog their every step. As the fitful years of peace lead to the outbreak of the Second World War—involving Africa once more—Leon and Saffron must fight for their survival . . . and that of their illustrious family. Wilbur Smith masterfully captures the tensions that will spark a war across continents—and the uncertainty and hopes of a father and daughter caught in its grips—in this engrossing novel that delivers the fast-paced action and vivid history that have made him a living legend.
