Book excerpt: An unprecedented look into the basic physics, chemistry, and technology behind the LCD Most notably used for computer screens, televisions, and mobile phones, LCDs (liquid crystal displays) are a pervasive and increasingly indispensable part of our lives. Providing both an historical and a business-minded context, this extensive resource describes the unique scientific and engineering techniques used to create these beautiful, clever, and eminently useful devices. In this book, the history of the science and technology behind the LCD is described in a prelude to the development of the device, presenting a rational development theme and pinpointing innovations. The book begins with Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism, and the ultimately profound realization that light is an electromagnetic wave and an electromagnetic wave is light. The power of mathematical physics thus was brought to bear upon the study of light, and particularly the polarization of light by material bodies, including liquid crystals. After a brief historical description of polarization, a physical interpretation provides substance to the mathematical concepts. Subsequent chapters cover: Thermodynamics for liquid crystals The Maier-Saupe mean field, phenomenological, static continuum, and dynamic continuum theories The transistor and integrated circuit Glass, panels, and modules The calculus of variations The active matrix Semiconductor fabrication The global LCD business Additionally, the book illustrates how mathematics, physics, and chemistry are put to practical use in the LCDs we use every day. By describing the science from an historical perspective and in practical terms in the context of a device very familiar to readers, the book presents an engaging and unique view of the technology for everyone from science students to engineers, product designers, and indeed anyone curious about LCDs. Series Editor: Anthony C. Lowe, The Lambent Consultancy, Braishfield, UK The Society for Information Display (SID) is an international society, which has the aim of encouraging the development of all aspects of the field of information display. Complementary to the aims of the society, the Wiley-SID series is intended to explain the latest developments in information display technology at a professional level. The broad scope of the series addresses all facets of information displays from technical aspects through systems and prototypes to standards and ergonomics.

Book excerpt: This book reports recent advances in the use of pattern recognition techniques for computer and robot vision. The sciences of pattern recognition and computational vision have been inextricably intertwined since their early days, some four decades ago with the emergence of fast digital computing. All computer vision techniques could be regarded as a form of pattern recognition, in the broadest sense of the term. Conversely, if one looks through the contents of a typical international pattern recognition conference proceedings, it appears that the large majority (perhaps 70-80%) of all pattern recognition papers are concerned with the analysis of images. In particular, these sciences overlap in areas of low level vision such as segmentation, edge detection and other kinds of feature extraction and region identification, which are the focus of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in teleradiology are progressing at great speed. As a consequence, there is a need for a broad overview of the field. This first-ever book on teleradiology is presented in such a way that it should make it accessible to anyone, independent of their knowledge of technology. The text is designed to be used by all professionals, including radiologists, surgeons, nurses and allied health professionals, and computer scientists. In a very short time, driven by technical developments, the field of teleradiology has become too extensive to be covered by only a small number of experts. Therefore, Teleradiology has been written with chapter contributions from a host of renowned international authorities in teleradiology (see the Contents and the Contributors). This ensures that the subject matter focusing on recent advances in teleradiology is truly up to date. Our guiding hope during this task was that as editors of multiple chapters we could still write with a single voice and keep the content coherent and simple. We hope that the clarity of this book makes up for any limitations in its comp- hensiveness.

Book excerpt: The First to Present 3D Technology as Applied to Commercial Programming for the Consumer This is the first book to provide an overview of the technologies, standards, and infrastructure required to support the rollout of commercial real-time 3 Dimension Television/3 Dimension Video (3DTV/3DV) services. It reviews the required standards and technologies that have emerged—or are just emerging—in support of such new services, with a focus on encoding mechanisms formats and the buildout of the transport infrastructure. While there is a lot of academic interest in various intrinsic aspects of 3DTV, service providers and consumers ultimately tend to take a system-level view. 3DTV stakeholders need to consider the overall architectural system-level view of what it will take to deploy an infrastructure that is able to reliably and cost-effectively deliver a commercial-grade quality bundle of multiple 3DTV content channels to paying customers with high expectations. This text, therefore, takes such a system-level view, revealing how to actually deploy the technology. Presented in a self-contained, tutorial fashion, the book begins with a review of 3DTV in the marketplace and the opportunities and challenges therein. Recent industry events related to 3D are also discussed. From there, the fundamental visual concepts supporting stereographic perception of 3DTV/3DV are explained, as are encoding approaches. Readers will understand frame mastering and compression for conventional stereo video (CSV) and more advanced methods such as video plus depth (V+D), multi-view video plus depth (MV+D), and layered depth video (LDV). Next, the elements of an end-to-end 3DTV system are covered from a satellite delivery perspective, with explanations of digital video broadcasting (DVB) and DVB-handheld. Transmission technologies are assessed for terrestrial and IPTV-based architecture; IPv6 is reviewed in detail. Finally, the book presents 3DTV/3DV standardization and related activities, which are critical to any type of broad deployment. System planners, the broadcast TV industry, satellite operators, Internet service providers, terrestrial telecommunication carriers, content developers, design engineers, venture capitalists, and students and professors are among those stakeholders in these services, and who will rely on this volume to discover the latest 3D advances, market opportunities, and competing technologies.

Book excerpt: In recent years, Moore's law has fostered the steady growth of the field of digital image processing, though the computational complexity remains a problem for most of the digital image processing applications. In parallel, the research domain of optical image processing has matured, potentially bypassing the problems digital approaches were suffering and bringing new applications. The advancement of technology calls for applications and knowledge at the intersection of both areas but there is a clear knowledge gap between the digital signal processing and the optical processing communities. This book covers the fundamental basis of the optical and image processing techniques by integrating contributions from both optical and digital research communities to solve current application bottlenecks, and give rise to new applications and solutions. Besides focusing on joint research, it also aims at disseminating the knowledge existing in both domains. Applications covered include image restoration, medical imaging, surveillance, holography, etc... "a very good book that deserves to be on the bookshelf of a serious student or scientist working in these areas." Source: Optics and Photonics News
