Book excerpt: High Temperatures in Aeronautics is a compilation of the proceedings of the Symposium on High Temperatures in Aeronautics held in Turin, Italy, on September 10-12, 1962. The symposium provided a forum to discuss the applications of high temperatures in aeronautics and covers topics ranging from supersonic combustion to non-equilibrium flow through a nozzle, along with similarity parameters in radiation gas-dynamics and photoionization upstream of a strong shock wave. This volume is comprised of 17 chapters and begins with an overview of the effects and consequences of high temperature in aeronautics, followed by an analysis of experimental results for the dissociation of diatomic gases. A theoretical and experimental investigation of mixing and supersonic combustion is then presented, focusing on inviscid flow fields with a finite rate chemistry for a hydrogen-air reaction. Turbulent mixing for flows with large density gradients having no chemical reaction is also considered, and the results of experiments in supersonic combustion are discussed. Subsequent chapters deal with silicon nitride, its properties, and its potential use at elevated temperatures; materials problems at high temperature; and the corrosion of refractory alloys by oil ash containing vanadium. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the important work which the late Professor H.A. Lorentz did to develop Maxwell's theory in the years before his middle age. It begins with the treatise concerning the relation be tween the propagation of light and the density of media. The Lorenz Lorentz formula is arrived at (page 57) and an electromagnetic dispersion theory of light is developed (p. 70, Bo) for the first time, so far as we know. This work was finished as early as I878: in an abridged form the results were published in Wiedemann's An nalen der Physik und Chemie (9, 64I, I88o); until now the com plete treatise was only accessible in the Dutch language. In the following dozen years the development of Maxwell's theory was carried further and the result was the paper published in I892, which is found in the end of the volume. The work of Boltz mann and Hertz dates from the same period. Lorentz took the view that matter was perfectly permeable to the ether and that the latter was invariably at rest. Still, after Hertz published his theory based on the idea that the ether contained in moving bodies completely shared the motion, Lorentz inserted a chapter developing the inferences to be drawn from this axiom (p. 206) which was contradictory to the line he followed himself in order to account for Fresnel's coefficient.

John Arbuthnot, from the preface to his translation of Huygens's "De Ratiociniis in Ludo Alooe". Prompted by an awareness of the importance of Bayesian ideas in modern statistical theory and practice, I decided some years ago to undertake a study of the development and growth of such ideas. At the time it seemed appropriate to begin such an investigation with an examination of Bayes's Essay towards solving a problem in the doctrine of chances and Laplace's Theorie analytique des probabilites, and then to pass swiftly on to a brief consideration of other nineteenth century works before turning to what would be the main topic of the treatise, videlicet the rise of Bayesian statis tics from the 1950's to the present day. It soon became apparent, however, that the amount of Bayesian work published was such that a thorough investigation of the topic up to the 1980's would require several volumes - and also run the risk of incurring the wrath of extant authors whose writings would no doubt be misrepre sented, or at least be so described. It seemed wise, therefore, to restrict the period and the subject under study in some way, and I decided to con centrate my attention on inverse probability from Thomas Bayes to Karl Pearson.
