This book was released on 2021-02-17 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together interdisciplinary scholars from history, theology, folklore, ethnology and meteorology to examine how David Cranz’s Historie von Grönland (1765) resonated in various disciplines, periods and countries. Collectively the contributors demonstrate the reach of the book beyond its initial purpose as a record of missionary work, and into secular and political fields beyond Greenland and Germany. The chapters also reveal how the book contributed to broader discussions and conceptualizations of Greenland as part of the Atlantic world. The interdisciplinary scope of the volume allows for a layered reading of Cranz’s book that demonstrates how different meanings could be drawn from the book in different contexts and how the book resonated throughout time and space. It also makes the broader argument that the construction of the Artic in the eighteenth century broadened our understanding of the Atlantic.

Book Synopsis The American Language by : H. L. Mencken
Download or read book The American Language written by H. L. Mencken and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Language: A Preliminary Inquiry Into the Development of English in the United States I am thus neither teacher, nor prophet, nor reformer, but merely inquirer. The exigencies of my vocation make me almost com pletely bilingual; moreover, I have a hand for a compromise dialect which embodies the common materials of both languages, and is thus free from offense on both sides of the water - as befits the editor of a magazine published in both countries. But that compromise dialect is the living speech of neither. What I have tried to do here is to make a first sketch of the living speech of these States. The work is confessedly incomplete, and in places very painfully so, but in such enterprises a man must put an arbitrary term to his labors, lest some mischance, after years of diligence, take him from them too suddenly for them to be closed, and his laborious accumula tions, as Ernest Weekly says in his book on English surnames, be doomed to the waste-basket by harassed executors. Download or read book A Key Into the Language of America: The First Book of Native American Languages, Dating to 1643 - With Accounts of the Tribes' Culture, Wars, Folklore written by Roger Williams and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roger Williams' guide to the language of the Native American tribes was the first of its kind ever published; as well as linguistic instruction, we receive stunning insights into the culture and customs of the New England tribes. This historic text was written to accomplish two goals: Firstly, it is a practical, instructional guidebook written with the colonial society in mind. Particularly where religious missions are concerned, but also in general, the author feels that colonialists should have a command of Native American languages. Williams passionately believed in peaceful coexistence, and realized that an understanding of the native speech was crucial for this. Secondly, the book aims to promote understanding of Native American culture. What customs the tribes practice, the foods they eat, their marital and social mores, their methods of communicating knowledge, how they regard the many beasts of nature, and how trade and commerce is practiced are but some of the topics Williams discusses.
