Book excerpt: This book is about life and the experiences in life. Though no two lives are the same I believe that for the most part we share the same basic experiences. There are eight parts of this book. It starts with thought provoking and feel good poems and then progresses to the deeper and darker poems. Part four is about a lost youth which should shed some light on some of the other poems. Life is a full range of feelings and emotions. I hope this book expresses them all. The good, bad, and ugly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling debut book of poetry from Lana Del Rey, Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass. “Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is the title poem of the book and the first poem I wrote of many. Some of which came to me in their entirety, which I dictated and then typed out, and some that I worked laboriously picking apart each word to make the perfect poem. They are eclectic and honest and not trying to be anything other than what they are and for that reason I’m proud of them, especially because the spirit in which they were written was very authentic.” —Lana Del Rey Lana’s breathtaking first book solidifies her further as “the essential writer of her times” (The Atlantic). The collection features more than thirty poems, many exclusive to the book: Never to Heaven, The Land of 1,000 Fires, Past the Bushes Cypress Thriving, LA Who Am I to Love You?, Tessa DiPietro, Happy, Paradise Is Very Fragile, Bare Feet on Linoleum, and many more. This beautiful hardcover edition showcases Lana’s typewritten manuscript pages alongside her original photography. The result is an extraordinary poetic landscape that reflects the unguarded spirit of its creator. Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is also brought to life in an unprecedented spoken word audiobook which features Lana Del Rey reading fourteen select poems from the book accompanied by music from Grammy Award–winning musician Jack Antonoff.

Book excerpt: To live, every being must put out a line, and in life these lines tangle with one another. This book is a study of the life of lines. Following on from Tim Ingold's groundbreaking work Lines: A Brief History, it offers a wholly original series of meditations on life, ground, weather, walking, imagination and what it means to be human. In the first part, Ingold argues that a world of life is woven from knots, and not built from blocks as commonly thought. He shows how the principle of knotting underwrites both the way things join with one another, in walls, buildings and bodies, and the composition of the ground and the knowledge we find there. In the second part, Ingold argues that to study living lines, we must also study the weather. To complement a linealogy that asks what is common to walking, weaving, observing, singing, storytelling and writing, he develops a meteorology that seeks the common denominator of breath, time, mood, sound, memory, colour and the sky. This denominator is the atmosphere. In the third part, Ingold carries the line into the domain of human life. He shows that for life to continue, the things we do must be framed within the lives we undergo. In continually answering to one another, these lives enact a principle of correspondence that is fundamentally social. This compelling volume brings our thinking about the material world refreshingly back to life. While anchored in anthropology, the book ranges widely over an interdisciplinary terrain that includes philosophy, geography, sociology, art and architecture.

Book excerpt: John Izbicki has an exciting story to tell. Berlin-born, he lived through the horrors of Nazi persecution and, on the day after his eighth birthday, he witnessed the Kristallnacht, and the smashing of his parents' shop windows. On the day Germany invaded Poland and Berlin experienced its first wartime blackout, the Izbickis escaped to Holland and from there on to England. The author describes what it feels like to have been a refugee, unable to speak or understand a single word of English, and how he was persuaded by a kind policeman to change his name from Horst to John. He also leads the reader along the remarkable journey he travelled from school to university, the first of his family to enter higher education, and through his adventurous time as a commissioned army officer during two years of national service spent in Egypt and Libya. But the best part of his life was yet to come when this young refugee decided to make journalism his profession. The boy who, not that many years earlier, could speak not a word of English, became the distinguished education correspondent of the country's leading quality newspaper, the Daily Telegraph. After eighteen years in that responsible position, he was sent to Paris to head the Telegraph's office there. When he left the newspaper to join the Committee of Directors of Polytechnics, he played a leading part in transforming the country's polytechnics into its 'new universities'.

Book excerpt: "Life Lines Book 2" provides further original and comprehensive analysis of life's varied moments, and is constructed in harmony with the Christian ethos to view nature with a positive mind. The advantage of the poetic form of the book is the way that this gives more vivid and compact expression. This is evident in the characteristic of the poems giving full insight into Christian and social life, as well as life's experiences and activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adoptions that cross the lines of culture, race and nation are a major consequence of conflicts around the globe, yet their histories and representations have rarely been considered. Life Lines: Writing Transcultural Adoption is the first critical study to explore narratives of transcultural adoption from contemporary Britain, Ireland and America: fictions, films and memoirs made by those within the adoption 'triad' or those concerned with the pain and possibilities of transcultural adoption. While acknowledging the sobering inequalities which engender transcultural adoptions and the lasting upset of sundered relations, at the same time John McLeod considers the transfigurative and creative propensity of imagining transcultural adoption as radically calling into question ideas of biogenetic attachment, racial genealogy, cultural identity and normative family-making. How might the predicament of 'being adopted' transculturally enable the transformative agency of 'adoptive being' for all? Exploring works by Andrea Levy, Barbara Kingsolver, Toni Morrison, Sebastian Barry, Caryl Phillips, Jackie Kay and several others, Life Lines makes a groundbreaking intervention in such fields as transcultural studies, postcolonial thought, and adoption theory and practice.

Book excerpt: Life Lines: A Daily Journey is the very personal pilgrimage- in poetry and prayer- of a year in the life of the author, as she seeks to make sense of the world around her; to look at and celebrate the dailiness of life; and to deal with the pitfalls and challenges of simply being human. Because it touches on all 366 days of the year, this evocative book can also serve as a daily companion for anyone making their own life journey; anyone seeking an open, understanding, sometimes funny, often irreverent, always thoughtful, companion along the way; anyone desiring that companion to deal honestly and with great personal integrity with both the complex and mundane issues of daily life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During much of his early career, from 1944 through to the early 1960s, Richard Hardy took hundreds of pictures of life on the railways and the men he knew and worked with on a daily basis, using his trusty Brownie 620 box camera. These unique behind the scenes images form a fascinating and hugely evocative portrayal of Britain at the height of the era of steam, during the time of the 'Big Four', and after 1947 when the sprawling nationalised network known as British Railways came of age. The second edition contains many new unseen photos which capture the railways in wartime, providing a valuable social record of the nation at war. In addition there is a sequence of rare photographs of French engines, railways and railwaymen, offering a superb contrast to the British rail network (it quickly becomes evident that the British rail system ran on tea, whereas the French system ran on wine). Great characters are the unifying theme of the pictures, and they include famous figures associated with the railways, such as the poet John Betjeman. This wonderfully illustrated book sets Richard's personal photographs and text alongside a carefully collated selection of ephemera, artworks and photographs drawn from the National Railway Museum in York. Collectively these images and artefacts tell the stories of the great brotherhood of railwaymen, brilliantly evoking the speed, heat and dust of the footplate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting the Truths of the Bible in a Contemporary, Engaging Style With over 300 Inspirational Rhymes The author, Simon Siewsaran, is the Founder and Senior Pastor of the Everlasting Gospel Church (established in 1997), a vibrant community ministry, located at Enterprise, Trinidad. Pastor Siewsaran is also the host of "Don't Give Up," a popular radio broadcast that began in 2001 and is heard throughout Trinidad & Tobago and the southern Caribbean. His early years in ministry were primarily among delinquent youths, including drug addicts, and during this time was himself the target of numerous molestations from fellow villagers. Yet signs and wonders continue to follow this servant of God who has impacted thousands of lives in honour of the Kingdom. His effervescent, lyrical style of preaching endears him to both young and old; and his anointed ministry extends beyond his pastoral duties, most notably as the President of "Touch T&T Ministries," a para-church organization that conducts national events, including crusades, concerts and prayer assemblies. Pastor Siewsaran's missionary trips include the Holy Land - three occasions - Egypt, England, Holland, USA and the Caribbean islands of Antigua, Barbados and St. Lucia. In 1997 he received the title of Jerusalem Pilgrim from Israel's Ministry of Tourism. He is the husband of Johanna and the father of two daughters, Victoria Sarah and Gloria Elizabeth.
