Book Synopsis Chinese Netizens' Opinions on Death Sentences by : Bin Liang
Download or read book Chinese Netizens' Opinions on Death Sentences written by Bin Liang and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few social issues have received more public attention and scholarly debate than the death penalty. While the abolitionist movement has made a successful stride in recent decades, a small number of countries remain committed to the death penalty and impose it with a relatively high frequency. In this regard, the People’s Republic of China no doubt leads the world in both numbers of death sentences and executions. Despite being the largest user of the death penalty, China has never conducted a national poll on citizens’ opinions toward capital punishment, while claiming “overwhelming public support” as a major justification for its retention and use. Based on a content analysis of 38,512 comments collected from 63 cases in 2015, this study examines the diversity and rationales of netizens’ opinions of and interactions with China’s criminal justice system. In addition, the book discusses China’s social, systemic, and structural problems and critically examines the rationality of netizens’ opinions based on Habermas’s communicative rationality framework. Readers will be able to contextualize Chinese netizens’ discussions and draw conclusions about commonalities and uniqueness of China’s death penalty practice.
Book Synopsis Claws of the Panda by : Jonathan Manthorpe
Download or read book Claws of the Panda written by Jonathan Manthorpe and published by Cormorant Books. This book was released on 2024-05-04 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claws of the Panda tells the story of Canada’s failure to construct a workable policy towards the People’s Republic of China. In particular, the book tells of Ottawa’s failure to recognize and confront the efforts by the Chinese Communist Party to infiltrate and influence Canadian institutions and to exert control over Canadians of Chinese heritage. It shows how Canadian leaders have constantly misjudged the reality of the relationship while the CCP and its agents have benefited from Canadian naivete. The Expanded and Updated edition of Claws of the Panda arrives at a crucial point as Canada’s delusions abouts its friendly relations with the CCP have fallen apart since the book’s initial publication. This edition sets out to uncover Ottawa’s relationship with Beijing in light of the CCP regime’s increasingly suspicious and belligerent relations with the US and Europe. The age of a distinctly Canadian bilateral relationship with Beijing is over.
Book Synopsis International Students in Transnational Spaces by : Xi Wu
Download or read book International Students in Transnational Spaces written by Xi Wu and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Xi Wu examines how national and transnational forces and discursive logic mediate international secondary school students’ educational routes and life trajectories. Drawing upon an ethnographic research program involving Chinese students in a Canadian international secondary school, Wu employs Ong’s notion of transnational cultural logics to examine students’ lives and how they flexibly and not-so-flexibly engaged in their learning and self-making in their transnational spaces. The book provides a comprehensive understanding of international students as agentic and socially regulated subjects in their transnational routes. These insights contribute to advancing curriculum and program improvements. Furthermore, Wu applies theoretical notions of "transnationalism" and "global and transnational cultural logics" to the examination of specific phenomenon and analyzes how cultural logics stemming from families, nations, and societies govern subjectivities in their actions and aspirations. This insightful book will be of interest to a wide range of education stakeholders, as well as scholars and researchers in comparative and international education.
Book Synopsis The Fruits of Opportunism by : Le Lin
Download or read book The Fruits of Opportunism written by Le Lin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-10-14 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth examination of the regulatory, entrepreneurial, and organizational factors contributing to the expansion and transformation of China’s supplemental education industry. Like many parents in the United States, parents in China, increasingly concerned with their children’s academic performance, are turning to for-profit tutoring businesses to help their children get ahead in school. China’s supplemental education industry is now the world’s largest and most vibrant for-profit education market, and we can see its influence on the US higher education system: more than 70% of Chinese students studying in American universities have taken test preparation classes for overseas standardized tests. The Fruits of Opportunism offers a much-needed thorough investigation into this industry. This book examines how opportunistic organizations thrived in an ambiguous policy environment and how they catalyzed organizational and institutional changes in this industry. A former insider in China’s Education Industry, sociologist Le Lin shows how and why this industry evolved to become a for-profit one dominated by private, formal, nationally operating, and globally financed corporations, despite restrictions the Chinese state placed on the industry. Looking closely at the opportunistic organizations that were founded by marginal entrepreneurs and quickly came to dominate the market, Lin finds that as their non-compliant practices spread across the industry, these opportunistic organizations pushed privatization and marketization from below. The case of China’s Education Industry laid out in The Fruits of Opportunism illustrates that while opportunism leaves destruction in its wake, it can also drive the formation and evolution of a market.
