Book excerpt: Many problems in celestial mechanics, physics and engineering involve the study of oscillating systems governed by nonlinear ordinary differential equations or partial differential equations. This volume represents an important contribution to the available methods of solution for such systems. The contents are divided into six chapters. Chapter 1 presents a study of periodic solutions for nonlinear systems of evolution equations including differential equations with lag, systems of neutral type, various classes of nonlinear systems of integro-differential equations, etc. A numerical-analytic method for the investigation of periodic solutions of these evolution equations is presented. In Chapters 2 and 3, problems concerning the existence of periodic and quasiperiodic solutions for systems with lag are examined. For a nonlinear system with quasiperiodic coefficients and lag, the conditions under which quasiperiodic solutions exist are established. Chapter 4 is devoted to the study of invariant toroidal manifolds for various classes of systems of differential equations with quasiperiodic coefficients. Chapter 5 examines the problem concerning the reducibility of a linear system of difference equations with quasiperiodic coefficients to a linear system of difference equations with constant coefficients. Chapter 6 contains an investigation of invariant toroidal sets for systems of difference equations with quasiperiodic coefficients. For mathematicians whose work involves the study of oscillating systems.

Book excerpt: Historically, the theory of stability is based on linear differential systems, which are simple and important systems in ordinary differential equations. The research on differential equations and on the theory of stability will, to a certain extent, be influenced by the research on linear differential systems. For differential linear equation systems, there are still many historical open questions attracting mathematicians. This book deals with the theory of linear differential systems developed around the notion of exponential dichotomies. The authors advance the theory of stability through their research in this field. Several new important results on linear differential systems are presented. They concern exponential dichotomy and the structure of the sets of hyperbolic points. The book has five chapters: Chapter 1 introduces some necessary classical results on the linear differential systems, and the following chapters discuss exponential dichotomy, spectra of almost periodic linear systems, the Floquet theory for quasi periodic linear systems and the structure of sets of hyperbolic points. This book is a very useful reference in the area of the stability theory of ordinary differential equations and the theory of dynamic systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear Ordinary Differential Equations, a text for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate students, presents a thorough development of the main topics in linear differential equations. A rich collection of applications, examples, and exercises illustrates each topic. The authors reinforce students' understanding of calculus, linear algebra, and analysis while introducing the many applications of differential equations in science and engineering. Three recurrent themes run through the book. The methods of linear algebra are applied directly to the analysis of systems with constant or periodic coefficients and serve as a guide in the study of eigenvalues and eigenfunction expansions. The use of power series, beginning with the matrix exponential function leads to the special functions solving classical equations. Techniques from real analysis illuminate the development of series solutions, existence theorems for initial value problems, the asymptotic behavior solutions, and the convergence of eigenfunction expansions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MATHEMATICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathe matics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical Encyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977-1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fine subdivi sion has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathematics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, en gineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.

Book excerpt: This book provides a self-contained introduction to ordinary differential equations and dynamical systems suitable for beginning graduate students. The first part begins with some simple examples of explicitly solvable equations and a first glance at qualitative methods. Then the fundamental results concerning the initial value problem are proved: existence, uniqueness, extensibility, dependence on initial conditions. Furthermore, linear equations are considered, including the Floquet theorem, and some perturbation results. As somewhat independent topics, the Frobenius method for linear equations in the complex domain is established and Sturm–Liouville boundary value problems, including oscillation theory, are investigated. The second part introduces the concept of a dynamical system. The Poincaré–Bendixson theorem is proved, and several examples of planar systems from classical mechanics, ecology, and electrical engineering are investigated. Moreover, attractors, Hamiltonian systems, the KAM theorem, and periodic solutions are discussed. Finally, stability is studied, including the stable manifold and the Hartman–Grobman theorem for both continuous and discrete systems. The third part introduces chaos, beginning with the basics for iterated interval maps and ending with the Smale–Birkhoff theorem and the Melnikov method for homoclinic orbits. The text contains almost three hundred exercises. Additionally, the use of mathematical software systems is incorporated throughout, showing how they can help in the study of differential equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains three articles: "Asymptotic methods in the theory of ordinary differential equations" b'y V. F. Butuzov, A. B. Vasil'eva, and M. V. Fedoryuk, "The theory of best ap proximation in Dormed linear spaces" by A. L. Garkavi, and "Dy namical systems with invariant measure" by A. 'VI. Vershik and S. A. Yuzvinskii. The first article surveys the literature on linear and non linear singular asymptotic problems, in particular, differential equations with a small parameter. The period covered by the survey is primarily 1962-1967. The second article is devoted to the problem of existence, characterization, and uniqueness of best approximations in Banach spaces. One of the chapters also deals with the problem of the convergence of positive operators, inasmuch as the ideas and methods of this theory are close to those of the theory of best ap proximation. The survey covers the literature of the decade 1958-1967. The third article is devoted to a comparatively new and rapid ly growing branch of mathematics which is closely related to many classical and modern mathematical disciplines. A survey is given of results in entropy theory, classical dynamic systems, ergodic theorems, etc. The results surveyed were primarily published during the period 1956-1967.

Book excerpt: In the last few decades the theory of ordinary differential equations has grown rapidly under the action of forces which have been working both from within and without: from within, as a development and deepen ing of the concepts and of the topological and analytical methods brought about by LYAPUNOV, POINCARE, BENDIXSON, and a few others at the turn of the century; from without, in the wake of the technological development, particularly in communications, servomechanisms, auto matic controls, and electronics. The early research of the authors just mentioned lay in challenging problems of astronomy, but the line of thought thus produced found the most impressive applications in the new fields. The body of research now accumulated is overwhelming, and many books and reports have appeared on one or another of the multiple aspects of the new line of research which some authors call" qualitative theory of differential equations". The purpose of the present volume is to present many of the view points and questions in a readable short report for which completeness is not claimed. The bibliographical notes in each section are intended to be a guide to more detailed expositions and to the original papers. Some traditional topics such as the Sturm comparison theory have been omitted. Also excluded were all those papers, dealing with special differential equations motivated by and intended for the applications.
