Book excerpt: It has been widely recognized nowadays the importance of introducing mathematical models that take into account possible sudden changes in the dynamical behavior of a high-integrity systems or a safety-critical system. Such systems can be found in aircraft control, nuclear power stations, robotic manipulator systems, integrated communication networks and large-scale flexible structures for space stations, and are inherently vulnerable to abrupt changes in their structures caused by component or interconnection failures. In this regard, a particularly interesting class of models is the so-called Markov jump linear systems (MJLS), which have been used in numerous applications including robotics, economics and wireless communication. Combining probability and operator theory, the present volume provides a unified and rigorous treatment of recent results in control theory of continuous-time MJLS. This unique approach is of great interest to experts working in the field of linear systems with Markovian jump parameters or in stochastic control. The volume focuses on one of the few cases of stochastic control problems with an actual explicit solution and offers material well-suited to coursework, introducing students to an interesting and active research area. The book is addressed to researchers working in control and signal processing engineering. Prerequisites include a solid background in classical linear control theory, basic familiarity with continuous-time Markov chains and probability theory, and some elementary knowledge of operator theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to help the reader understand the linear continuous-time time-invariant dynamical systems theory and its importance for systems analysis and design of the systems operating in real conditions, i.e., in forced regimes under arbitrary initial conditions. The text completely covers IO, ISO and IIO systems. It introduces the concept of the system full matrix P(s) in the complex domain and establishes its link with the also newly introduced system full transfer function matrix F(s). The text establishes the full block diagram technique based on the use of F(s), which incorporates the Laplace transform of the input vector and the vector of all initial conditions. It explores the direct relationship between the system full transfer function matrix F(s) and the Lyapunov stability concept, definitions and conditions, as well as with the BI stability concept, definitions, and conditions. The goal of the book is to unify the study and applications of all three classes of the of the linear continuous-time time-invariant systems, for short systems.

Book excerpt: In view of the importance of system identification, the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) and the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS) hold symposia on this topic every three years. Interest in continuous time approaches to system identification has been growing in recent years. This is evident from the fact that the of invited sessions on continuous time systems has increased from one in the 8th number Symposium that was held in Beijing in 1988 to three in the 9th Symposium in Budapest in 1991. It was during the 8th Symposium in August 1988 that the idea of bringing together important results on the topic of Identification of continuous time systems was conceived. Several distinguished colleagues, who were with us in Beijing at that time, encouraged us by promising on the spot to contribute to a comprehensive volume of collective work. Subsequently, we contacted colleagues all over the world, known for their work in this area, with a formal request to contribute to the proposed volume. The response was prompt and overwhelmingly encouraging. We sincerely thank all the authors for their valuable contributions covering various aspects of identification of continuous time systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Models of dynamical systems are required for various purposes in the field of systems and control. The models are handled either in discrete time (DT) or in continuous time (CT). Physical systems give rise to models only in CT because they are based on physical laws which are invariably in CT. In system identification, indirect methods provide DT models which are then converted into CT. Methods of directly identifying CT models are preferred to the indirect methods for various reasons. The direct methods involve a primary stage of signal processing, followed by a secondary stage of parameter estimation. In the primary stage, the measured signals are processed by a general linear dynamic operation—computational or realized through prefilters, to preserve the system parameters in their native CT form—and the literature is rich on this aspect. In this book: Identification of Continuous-Time Systems-Linear and Robust Parameter Estimation, Allamaraju Subrahmanyam and Ganti Prasada Rao consider CT system models that are linear in their unknown parameters and propose robust methods of estimation. This book complements the existing literature on the identification of CT systems by enhancing the secondary stage through linear and robust estimation. In this book, the authors provide an overview of CT system identification, consider Markov-parameter models and time-moment models as simple linear-in-parameters models for CT system identification, bring them into mainstream model parameterization via basis functions, present a methodology to robustify the recursive least squares algorithm for parameter estimation of linear regression models, suggest a simple off-line error quantification scheme to show that it is possible to quantify error even in the absence of informative priors, and indicate some directions for further research. This modest volume is intended to be a useful addition to the literature on identifying CT systems.

As a time-varying process of any physical state of any object, which serves for representation, detection, and transmission of messages, a modern electrical signal possesses, in applications, many specific properties. The text covers principle foundations of signals theory. Presenting bandlimited and analytic signals, the book reviews the methods of their description, transformation (by Hilbert transform), and sampling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discrete-time systems arise as a matter of course in modelling biological or economic processes. For systems and control theory they are of major importance, particularly in connection with digital control applications. If sampling is performed in order to control periodic processes, almost periodic systems are obtained. This is a strong motivation to investigate the discrete-time systems with time-varying coefficients. This research monograph contains a study of discrete-time nodes, the discrete counterpart of the theory elaborated by Bart, Gohberg and Kaashoek for the continuous case, discrete-time Lyapunov and Riccati equations, discrete-time Hamiltonian systems in connection with input-output operators and associated Hankel and Toeplitz operators. All these tools aim to solve the problems of stabilization and attenuation of disturbances in the framework of H2- and H-control theory. The book is the first of its kind to be devoted to these topics and consists mainly of original, recently obtained results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new and practical approach to understanding system theory The modern development of engineering and science requires a deep understanding of the basic concepts of system theory. Approaching the subject from a system, rather than an application-oriented perspective, world-renowned system expert Martin Schetzen provides practicing engineers and scientists, as well as students, with a solid, clearly explained foundation in the fundamentals of linear time-invariant (continuous) system theory. Developing linear systems from a functional viewpoint, the book is noteworthy for its presentation of: The time-domain theory of continuous time linear time-invariant (LTI) systems System transfer function, gain, and phase-shift An original development of the Fourier transform, the unilateral and bilateral Laplace transforms, and their inverses from a system theory viewpoint Basic filter analysis and design techniques from the s-plane viewpoint Feedback systems and their stability, interconnected systems, and block diagram reduction The state-variable approach to system analysis and its advantages for certain problems Taking an original, highly useful approach to system theory, Linear Time-Invariant Systems lays a solid foundation for further study of system modeling, control theory, filter theory, discrete system theory, state-variable theory, and other subjects requiring a system viewpoint. An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available upon request from the Wiley Makerting Department.
