Book excerpt: Acoustic microscopy enables the elastic properties of materials to be imaged and measured with the resolution of a good microscope. By using frequencies in the microwave regime, it is possible to make the acoustic wavelength comparable with the wavelength of light, and hence to achieve a resolution comparable with an optical microscope. Solids can support both longitudinal and transverse acoustic waves. At surfaces a unique combination of the two known as Raleigh waves can propagate, and in many circumstances these dominate the contrast in acoustic microscopy. Following the invention of scanning probe microscopes, it is now possible to use an atomic force microscope to detect the acoustic vibration of a surface with resolution in the nanometre range, thus beating the diffraction limit by operating in the extreme near-field. This second edition of Acoustic Microscopy has a major new chapter on the technique and applications of acoustically excited probe microscopy.

Book excerpt: Physical Acoustics: Principles and Methods, Volume XIV is a five-chapter text that covers significant studies on acoustic microscopy, sound propagation in liquid crystals, ultrasonic transducers, and ultrasonic flowmeters. The opening chapter discusses techniques of acoustic microscopy, aberration and resolution performance, acoustic lens transfer functions, antireflection coatings, and both transmission and reflection acoustic microscopy. The following chapter deals with the applications to the states called liquid crystals or anisotropic liquids, states in which the material flows but yet has a long-range order that makes it macroscopically anisotropic. The third chapter focuses on the principles and practical applications of electromagnetic transducers for both surface waves and bulk waves. The fourth chapter surveys first the characterization of ultrasonic transducers for materials testing and then compares actual responses to those of an ""ideal"" transducer, elaborating on the many important factors that affect the results obtained with an ultrasonic testing system. The final chapter explains the principles underlying ultrasonic measurements of flow, specifically covering eight different categories of ultrasonic flow measurement principles and their industrial applications indicated. This book will be of great value to researchers in their fields of electronics technology and applied and engineering mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 15 follows the format of earlier volumes in the series. The contents give the next installment in the varied aspects of acoustical imaging research. On this occasion, some emphasis was placed on the rela tionship of l1nderwater acoustics to acoustical imaging and a volume of papers under the title "Underwater Acoustics Proceedings from the 12th ICA Symposium held in Halifax," will appear at roughly the same time as this volume. There is no duplication in these volumes but they are in terlinked, at least to the extent that papers from common conference sessions appear in one or another volume. An innovation is the review paper presented at the beginning of the volume "A History of Acoustical Imaging," by G Wade. This fairly detailed review comes at a point in time when so much has been achieved and in some cases passed by, that a record of some of the earlier work might help to keep a balance with the large collections of research papers which have appeared in the many volumes.

Book excerpt: The combination of atomic force microscopy with ultrasonic methods allows the nearfield detection of acoustic signals. The nondestructive characterization and nanoscale quantitative mapping of surface adhesion and stiffness or friction is possible. The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive review of different scanning probe acoustic techniques, including AFAM, UAFM, SNFUH, UFM, SMM and torsional tapping modes. Basic theoretical explanations are given to understand not only the probe dynamics but also the dynamics of tip surface contacts. Calibration and enhancement are discussed to better define the performance of the techniques, which are also compared with other classical techniques such as nanoindentation or surface acoustic wave. Different application fields are described, including biological surfaces, polymers and thin films.

The authors are at the very center of today's research and present new and imported theoretical tools that have enabled our current understanding of the complex behavior of rocks. There are three central themes running throughout the presentation: · Rocks as the prototypical material for defining a class of materials · The PM space model as a useful theoretical construct for developing a phenomenology · A sequence of refined analysis methods. This suite of new methods for both recording and analyzing data is more than a single framework for interpretation, it is also a toolbox for the experimenter. A comprehensive and systematic book of utmost interest to anybody involved in non-destructive testing, civil engineering, and geophysics.
