Pourtant, son ennemi désigné est, traditionnellement, l'URSS. Les raisons de cet hybris sont à chercher dans sa volonté de détruire le statu quo imposé par les puissances occidentales en Asie orientale, ainsi que dans une crise interne insoluble qui le font choisir le camp des pays totalitaires. L'occupation du sud de l'Indochine en juillet 1941 est un point de non-retour. Cette crise où l'Indochine française a joué un rôle central, permet à l'historien de découvrir le mécanisme du processus de décision dans le Japon d'avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Les groupes dirigeants japonais ne connaissent pas de lutte entre des faucons et des colombes, mais la rivalité permanente de factions qui cherchent prendre la tête du mouvement expansionniste. Car si l'expansion fait consensus, la décision, tant de la direction que des moyens, est l'objet d'âpres luttes. C'est cependant à l'occasion de l'occupation de l'Indochine et à mesure que la Guerre du Pacifique se rapproche, qu'une synthèse se fait en haut de l'État par la constitution d'un groupe dirigeant composé de militaires et de bureaucrates favorisant une évolution totalitaire du régime, couplée à la construction d'un empire en Asie et dans le Pacifique.

La Résistance s’est effondrée en quelques jours et, dès le 10 mars, elle implore pour subsister le secours des Alliés qu’elle prétendait aider. En vain, car les Américains, qui mènent le jeu, apportent aide et soutien à un chef communiste, Ho Chi Minh, contre qui ils seront amenés à engager, quelques années plus tard, et sans succès, la totalité de leur puissance. Après le 9 mars 1945, le champ est libre pour les révolutionnaires qui attendaient prudemment, en territoire chinois, aux frontières de l’Indochine, le moment d’y susciter le désordre. On connaît la suite. D’erreur en erreur, la situation évolue au profit du Viet Minh, avec qui il faut bien traiter. Il en résultera une guerre interminable, une guerre que ni la France ni l’Amérique n’ont su gagner. Les choses pouvaient se présenter différemment. Un document sensationnel, cité par Georges Gautier, montre que Roosevelt envisageait la possibilité de confier à la France l’exercice d’un mandat international sur l’Indochine, dans la perspective d’une indépendance des États à l’échéance de 10 ou 15 ans. Ce que la France a réalisé en Côte d’Ivoire et au Cameroun, ne pouvait-elle le réussir en Indochine ?

Offers an in-depth and detailed analysis of the political processes that led to formation of the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. It argues that the Malaysia that came into being following the amalgamation of Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak and North Borneo was a political creation whose only rationale was that it served a convergence of political and economic expediency for the departing colonial power, the Malayan leadership and the ruling party of self-governing Singapore. 'Greater Malaysia' was thus an artificial political entity, the outcome of a concatenation of interests and motives of a number of political actors in London and Southeast Asia from the 1950s to the early 1960s. This led to a number of unresolved compromises between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and did not obviate the possibility of future difficulties, and the seeds of dissension sown by the disagreements between the two governments were to sprout into major crises during Singapore's brief history in the Federation of Malaysia.
