Book Synopsis Coastal Mass Tourism by : Bill Bramwell
Download or read book Coastal Mass Tourism written by Bill Bramwell and published by Channel View Publications. This book was released on 2004-02-05 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean coastal regions of Southern Europe have long been world leaders in mass tourism. This book examines some key questions for tourism development in these areas, with implications for similar regions across the world. The standardised forms of mass tourism are diversifying – with more specialised forms, notably those based on nature, culture and heritage, and those catering for special interests. There is a growing spectrum of modes of tourism, with an emphasis on variety, flexibility and permeability. Both mass tourism and the more diversified forms substantially impact on sustainable development. Policies promoting sustainable development are often of two main types: developing smaller-scale, alternative tourism products that are intended to be less damaging to the environment and society, and secondly, attempts to make mass tourism coastal resorts more sustainable. But there has been little critical assessment of these policies, either evaluating their basic assumptions or their successes and failures in practice. This edited book critically examines these issues for varied coastal regions in Southern Europe, including case studies from Spain, Croatia, Turkey, and north and south Cyprus.

Book Synopsis Biosphere Reserves and Sustainable Development Goals 1 by : Angela Barthes
Download or read book Biosphere Reserves and Sustainable Development Goals 1 written by Angela Barthes and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1971, UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme has embraced a number of principles that link the political, scientific and academic spheres. Biosphere Reserves and Sustainable Development Goals 1 presents these areas as privileged spaces for experimenting with operating methods specific to cross-cutting objectives and issues. These areas encourage the development of interdisciplinary research, supported by a worldwide network to disseminate experience, approaches and knowhow. The various global and local political scales are linked here, with different consequences for the reconfiguration of local political arenas, for specific modes of development linked to a renewed relationship with knowledge, powers and institutions, and for renewed relationships between the worlds of science, education and territorial governance.
Book Synopsis The Geography of Tourism and Recreation by : C. Michael Hall
Download or read book The Geography of Tourism and Recreation written by C. Michael Hall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-03-27 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlighting the inter-relationships between tourism, leisure and recreation, this revised edition introduces growing theoretical debates (from geography and the wider social science arena) to assess how new conceptualizations of tourism and leisure are advancing knowledge and understanding. Underpinning this book is the concept of the evolving nature of geography and social science, and their role in leading the analysis of the leisure phenomenon as a living subject, which has recently seen significant contributions from the new cultural geographies of consumption and leisure. These developments are clearly introduced, giving readers new to the subject area bite-sized introductions to key issues. Whilst this third edition retains the successful format and structure of previous editions, making it attractive and user-friendly to students without being overwhelming, it is completely revised and redeveloped to accommodate new case studies, insights, summary points and learning objectives. It is the only book to systematically compare and contrast in a spatial context, tourism and recreation in relation to leisure time, and its encyclopaedic reference section provides an excellent resource for new students. Retaining a global focus, this edition now features a greater emphasis on North America, and investigates the importance of less developed countries and the critical issues surrounding inequality, exploitation, underdevelopment and globalization as powerful forces affecting tourism and leisure.

Book Synopsis Oil Wealth and the Fate of the Forest by : Sven Wunder
Download or read book Oil Wealth and the Fate of the Forest written by Sven Wunder and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-16 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reduction in the size of the world's remaining rainforests is an issue of huge importance for all societies. This new book - an analysis of the impact of oil wealth on tropical deforestation in South America, Africa and Asia - takes a much more analytical approach than the usual fare of environmental studies. The focus on economies as a whole leads to a more balanced view than those that are often put forward and therefore, vitally, a view that is more valid. Of use to those who study environmental issues and economics, this book is potentially an indispensable tool for policy-makers the world over.
Book Synopsis Landscape and Sustainable Development by : Professor Peter Howard
Download or read book Landscape and Sustainable Development written by Professor Peter Howard and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previously published in French by Editions Quae, this volume presents findings of a major research programme into landscape and sustainable development. While led by French scholars, the research team and geographical scope of the project was international, collaborative and comparative. Using case studies from across Europe, the interdisciplinary team of contributors discuss the relationship between landscape as defined by the European Landscape Convention and the concept of sustainable development. This English edition has a new introduction written by Yves Luginbühl and Peter Howard. Some of the topics covered, such as wind-farm landscapes, will be familiar to English language readers, but others, are less so, such as footpath economics, non-woodland trees, inter-generational equity, and the insistence on the necessary developments in governance.
