Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A limnological oxidation technique, based on procedures employed in soil chemistry, was developed and tested by use of purified organic compounds and various natural substrates. A sample is oxidized by dichromate in a strongly acid medium maintained at 100 C. The amount of dichromate reacting (determined titrimetrically as the difference between the initial and final quantities) is reckoned as Oxygen Consumed, or weigh of oxygen required by the sample. The oxidation serves as the principal step for sensitive determinations of organic carbon (as CO2) and nitrogen (as NH3).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluctuations in strength of year classes from 1945 to 1956 of Yellowstone Lake cutthroat from Pelican and Chipmunk Creeks are compared with the parental stock and several climatically influenced factors of the environment. Variations in year-class strength in the two tributaries were highly correlated with fluctuations in lake water levels. Strong year classes occurred in yeas of low water. Female spawner escapement, timing of the runs, and summer air temperatures were not significant factors. A formula based on water levels is presented for predicting year-class strength in Pelican Creek and in the Fishing Bridge area fishery. Stocking of fry in years of high water is suggested as a means of supplementing natural production. A method of forecasting lake water levels several months in advance of their occurrence is discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In experiments at the Bureau's Salmon-Cultural Laboratory, to determine the excretory products of significance in rearing ponds and the possible effect of these products on fingerling chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), the results demonstrated that ammonia and urea are the principal products. The relative amounts of these products vary with the concentration of fish and with their metabolic activity. Ammonia assumes dominance in an unfavorable environment. Water temperature, pH, and pond type affect the toxicity of ammonia solutions. Continuous exposure to levels of ammonia normally encountered in rearing ponds produced extensive hyperplasia of the gill epithelium in controlled experiments.

The idea developed out of the editors largely unsuccessful search for published material on sea-water supply systems while planning the facilities for the Sandy Hook Marine Laboratory. The result is compiled volume of papers contributed by a number of aquarists who descibed their experiences in solving problems encountered in designing, constructing and maintaining systerms.

Book excerpt: Stomach contents of 924 striped marlin landed in the sport catches at Mazatlan, Sinaloa, and Buena Vista, Baja California, Sur, Mexico, and San Diego, California, and of 197 sailfish from Mazatlan and Buena Vista were examined. The striped marlin and sailfish fed primarily on pelagic fishes and cephalopods. By volume the major foods were squid (principally Dosidicus gigas) for striped marlin at Mazatlan and for striped marlin and sailfish at Buena Vista, northern anchovy for striped marlin at San Diego, and threadfin for sailfish at Mazatlan. Locally differences in food habits were pronounced, and some seasonal and yearly differences were found.

Book excerpt: In the Missouri River main stem reservoirs in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota, hydrodynamic processes have decreased the lengths of shorelines and changed their configurations during the first 20 to 25 years of impoundment. Physical changes to the shore probably influenced fish abundance and species composition by changing the quality and quantityt of spawning and nursery habitat.

This book was released on 1966 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of age composition, growth, length-weight relation, reproduction, year-class strength, and food habits were conducted from 1962 to 1964 on carp, river carpsucker, smallmouth buffalo, and bigmouth buffalo in Lewis and Clark Lake, a main stem Missouri River reservoir impounded in July 1955. Slow growth of these fishes was attributed to low standing crops of plankton and bottom fauna which may have resulted in excessive turbidity and rapid water exchange in the reservoir. All four species produced strong year classes in the 2 years following impoundment of Lewis and Clark Lake; reproduction since that time has been poor. These species did not produce year classes comparable in abundance to thos which occurred following impoundment because of unfavorable environmental conditions. The probable major limiting successful reproduction was lack of rise in water level durig the spawning period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an investigation of chronic toxicity of endrin to bluntnose minnows and guppies, conducted for 291 days, neither species could withstand concentrations greater than 0.5 parts per billion of endrin in water for more than a few days. Less than 50 percent of the test animals could live in 0.5 p.p.b. for more than 30 days. Approximately 65 percent could live in 0.4 p.p.b. for periods exceeding 30 days, while there was little mortality due to endrin on 0.25 and 0.1 p.p.b. endrin in water.
