Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrashort Laser Pulse Phenomena, Second Edition serves as an introduction to the phenomena of ultra short laser pulses and describes how this technology can be used to examine problems in areas such as electromagnetism, optics, and quantum mechanics. Ultrashort Laser Pulse Phenomena combines theoretical backgrounds and experimental techniques and will serve as a manual on designing and constructing femtosecond ("faster than electronics") systems or experiments from scratch. Beyond the simple optical system, the various sources of ultrashort pulses are presented, again with emphasis on the basic concepts and how they apply to the design of particular sources (dye lasers, solid state lasers, semiconductor lasers, fiber lasers, and sources based on frequency conversion). Provides an easy to follow guide through "faster than electronics" probing and detection methods THE manual on designing and constructing femtosecond systems and experiments Discusses essential technology for applications in micro-machining, femtochemistry, and medical imaging

Book excerpt: Soon after the invention of the laser, a brand-new area of endeavour emerged after the discovery that powerful ultrashort (picosecond) light pulses could be extracted from some lasers. Chemists, physicists, and engineers quickly recognized that such pulses would allow direct temporal studies of extremely rapid phenomena requiring, however, development of revolutionary ultrafast optical and electronic devices. For basic research the development of picosecond pulses was highly important because experimentalists were now able to measure directly the motions of atoms and molecules in liquids and solids: by disrupting a material from equilibrium with an intense picosecond pulse and then recording the time of return to the equilibrium state by picosecond techniques. Studies of picosecond laser pulses-their generation and diagnostic tech niques-are still undergoing a fairly rapid expansion, but a critical review of the state of the art by experienced workers in the field may be a timely help to new experimentalists. We shall review the sophisticated tools developed in the last ten years, including the modelocked picosecond-pulse-emitting lasers, the picosecond detection techniques, and picosecond devices. Moreover, we shall outline the basic foundations for the study of rapid events in chemistry and physics, which have emerged after many interesting experiments and which are now being applied in biology. An in-depth coverage of various aspects of the picosecond field should be helpful to scientists and engineers alike.

This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stabilization of the carrier-envelope phase of ultrashort laser pulses went through a rapid development from the first publication of a feasible concept in 1999 to being a mature tool for frequency metrology and attosecond science now. Using this technique, stabilization of the timing between the carrier wave and the envelope of a laser pulse with residual jitters of only 100 attoseconds has become possible. Naturally, the questions arises whether and how this can be further improved. The current work is devoted to determining the physical mechanisms which generate jitter in carrier-envelope phase stabilization. Furthermore, it is investigated whether there is a fundamental limitation to the achievable accuracy. To this end, two methods for removal of technical noise contributions are initially discussed. Different interferometer topologies are investigated and spurious interferometer noise is reduced by more than 40% using a commonpath layout. A novel two-detector based carrier-envelope phase retrieval technique for amplified laser pulses is demonstrated enabling the circumvention of the shot-noise constraint of the conventional extraction method to the maximum extent possible. Next, a novel feed-forward stabilization concept is developed that enables carrier-envelope phase stabilizations with only 20 attosecond residual timing jitter between carrier and envelope of the laser pulse. This feed-forward method is unconditionally stable against drop-out and permits the generation of a train of pulses with identical electric field structure with no additional measures. As the feed-forward concept widely avoids the technical noise sources of the conventional feedback stabilization, the resulting noise spectra exhibit only two unavoidable residual noise mechanisms: a highfrequency white noise floor stemming from shot noise in the carrier-envelope phase detection and a drift-like contribution with 1/f noise characteristics. Finally, the drift-like residual noise mechanism is found to induce phase noise below the level expected for the conversion of pump laser shot noise into carrier-envelope phase jitter. A feedback based squeezing, a photon-number squeezing process and a quantum non-demolition like conversion are discussed as possible explanations for this striking finding. It is shown that either the feedback squeezing or the quantum non-demolition process is the probable origin for the observed sub-shot-noise signatures of the carrier-envelope phase jitter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this comprehensive volume survey many recent innovations in ultrashort pulse generation, and review the state of the art in compact, modelocked laser systems, discussing both their operational principles and potential applications. The book first covers the theory of short optical pulse generation by modelocking. Then, contributors discuss modelocking techniques in different types of lasers: solid state; diode-pumped; fiber; surface emitting semiconductor lasers; external cavity semiconductor lasers; hybrid soliton pulse sources; and monolithic colliding pulse modelocked diode lasers. Presenting both theoretical and experimental aspects throughout, this book will be invaluable to anyone interested in short pulse laser systems, and particularly to researchers involved in high speed communications or the investigation of ultrafast phenomena.
