This book was released on 2009 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CDC Group Plc, formerly the Commonwealth Development Corporation, is the United Kingdom's Development Finance Institution. Wholly owned by the Department for International Development (DFID), it aims to help reduce poverty by supporting private sector development. CDC invests equity in private enterprises in developing countries in order to demonstrate to other investors that it is possible to make money in such countries, while at the same time creating sustainable jobs, paying taxes and following good social and environmental policies. DFID restructured CDC in 2004 in order to invest indirectly, through private fund managers. CDC invests largely in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asian enterprises in sectors as diverse as retail, financial, agricultural and manufacturing. Since 2004, CDC has grown rapidly, more than doubling the value of its assets to £2.7 billion by mid-2008. DFID's oversight of certain elements of business efficiency needs to be improved. CDC invests over 70 per cent of its resources in poor countries, but has limited influence where its fund managers invest. Only 4 per cent of its resources are invested in small and medium enterprises, which suffer a shortage of finance. For DFID, financial performance is the principal indicator of CDC's development impact, but this information is not sufficient to assess CDC's effect on poverty reduction and not enough is done to measure compliance with ethical investment principles. The level and nature of CDC executive remuneration are also relevant to business efficiency and management incentives. The Chief Executive's remuneration increased from £383,000 in 2003 to £970,000 in 2007, reflecting in part CDC's exceptional financial performance but pay arrangements place too much emphasis on financial performance and too little on success in reducing poverty.

Book Synopsis Pasicrisie Internationale 1794-1900 by : La Fontaine
Download or read book Pasicrisie Internationale 1794-1900 written by La Fontaine and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 693 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the United Nations undertook the publication of the Reports of International Arbitral Awards, the `Pasicrisie internationale' was identified as one of the rare truly general collections of international case law in existence. In fact, in deciding to publish the arbitration clauses and arbitral awards from 1794 to 1900, Henri La Fontaine was doing pioneering work, foreshadowing the famous Reports by half a century. As we near the end of the century, the `Pasicrisie internationale' remains just as pertinent as it was when first published in 1902. This collection of arbitral awards, with its modest appearance, has certainly contributed more to the development of international arbitration case law than any number of lyrical speeches advocating peace through law. First edition printed in 1902 by Stämpfli, Bern.

Book Synopsis Information Obligations and Disinformation of Consumers by : Gert Straetmans
Download or read book Information Obligations and Disinformation of Consumers written by Gert Straetmans and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on recent developments in consumer law, specifically addressing mandatory disclosures and the topical problem of information overload. It provides a comparative analysis based on national reports from countries with common law and civil law traditions in Asia, America and Europe, and presents the reports in the form of chapters that have been drafted on the basis of a questionnaire, and which use the same structure as the questionnaire to allow them to be easily compared. The book starts with an analysis of the basic assumptions underlying the current consumer protection models and examines whether and how consumer models adapt to the new market conditions. The second part addresses the information obligations themselves, first highlighting the differences in the reported countries before narrowing the analysis down to countries with a general pre-contractual information duty, particularly the transparency requirements that often come with such a duty. The next part examines recent developments in the law on food labelling, commercial practices and unfair contract terms in order to identify whether similar traits can be found in European and non-European jurisdictions. The fourth part of the book focuses on specific information obligations in the financial services and e-commerce sectors, discussing the fact that legislators are experimenting with different forms of summary disclosures in these sectors. The final part provides a critical appraisal of the recent developments in consumer information obligations, addressing the question of whether the multiple criticisms from behavioural sciences necessitate abandonment or refinement of current consumer information models in favour of new, more adequate forms of consumer protection, and providing suggestions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kierkegaard wrote four reflections on his literary production: On My Work as an Author, The Point of View for My Work as an Author, "The Single Individual," and Armed Neutrality, but he published only the first. The essays in this volume of International Kierkegaard Commentary examine these writings not just as a public "report to history" but also as a revelation of Kierkegaard's deepest understanding of himself as an author.
