Excerpt: ...a Britishoflicer, and being made free onhis master's death, he had opened a chapel in Kingston. Thirty-four years antecedent, the Moravians we have seen, were fixed on the south-side, in the swamp of Black River. Still earlier than this, by a quarter of a century, they had stations in the Danish West Indian islands (1732). The planters of Antigua had favoured the laudable enterprize of instruction to the negroes, and these selfdeuying men had settled in the colony, and laboured beneficially both for the interests of industry and order. The Established Church, with no organization, in several of the parishes _of the island, for a long series of years, existed however, at all times, witha certain reference to the religious instruction of slaves. As early as the year 1696, an act passed the Legislature of Jamaica, directing that all slave-owners should instruct their negroes, and have them baptized when fit for it. It was a direction by law, but no legal force was given to the order. With a solemnity truly absurd, .the Legislature re-enacted this lam in 1788, ninety-.-two years after it had been a dead letter. When little is known of early teaching by the sanction Qf law, we may assert that it never had been designed that this enactment should be any thing but a dead letter. A report of the House of Assembly of 1797, takes a retrospective view of the provision that then subsisted for religious ofiices by the agency of the establishment. After remarking, because the truth was not universally admitted, that " instruction in the principles and doctrines of the christian religion conduced to the publicmorals, and tended to the establishment of virtue," the report stated 'that the observation was recurred to " only as the...

Book excerpt: Creole Noise is a history of Creole, or 'dialect', literature and performance in the English-speaking Caribbean, from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. By emphasizing multiracial origins, transnational influences, and musical performance alongside often violent historical events of the nineteenth century - slavery, Emancipation, the Morant Bay Rebellion, the era of blackface minstrelsy, indentureship and immigration - it revises the common view that literary dialect in the Caribbean was a relatively modern, twentieth-century phenomenon, associated with regional anti-colonial or black-affirming nationalist projects. It explores both the lives and the literary texts of a number of early progenitors, among these a number of pro-slavery white creoles as well as the first black author of literary dialect in the English-speaking Caribbean. Creole Noise features a number of fascinating historical characters, among these Henry Garland Murray, a black Jamaican journalist and lecturer; Michael McTurk, the white magistrate from British Guiana who, as 'Quow', authored one of the earliest books of dialect literature; as well as blackface comedian and calypsonian Sam Manning, who along with Marcus Garvey's ex-wife, Amy Ashwood Garvey, wrote a popular dialect play that traveled across the United States. In so doing it reconstructs an earlier period of dialect literature, usually isolated or dismissed from the cultural narrative as racist mimicry or merely political, not part of a continuum of artistic production in the Caribbean.

Book excerpt: This study considers cultural representations of "brown" people in Jamaica and England alongside the determinations of race by statute from the Abolition era onwards. Through close readings of contemporary fictions and "histories," Salih probes the extent to which colonial ideologies may have been underpinned by what might be called subject-constituting statutes, along with the potential for force and violence which necessarily undergird the law. The author explores the role legal and non-legal discourse plays in disciplining the brown body in pre- and post-Abolition colonial contexts, as well as how are other bodies and identities – e.g. black, white are discursively disciplined. Salih examines whether or not it’s possible to say that non-legal texts such as prose fictions are engaged in this kind of discursive disciplining, and more broadly, looks at what contemporary formulations of "mixed" identity owe to these legal or non-legal discursive formations. This study demonstrates the striking connections between historical and contemporary discourses of race and brownness and argues for a shift in the ways we think about, represent and discuss "mixed race" people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the publication of Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations, nineteenth-century liberal economic thinkers insisted that a globally hegemonic Britain would profit only by abandoning the formal empire. British West Indians across the divides of race and class understood that, far from signaling an invitation to nationalist independence, this liberal economic discourse inaugurated a policy of imperial “neglect”—a way of ignoring the ties that obligated Britain to sustain the worlds of the empire’s distant fellow subjects. In Empire of Neglect Christopher Taylor examines this neglect’s cultural and literary ramifications, tracing how nineteenth-century British West Indians reoriented their affective, cultural, and political worlds toward the Americas as a response to the liberalization of the British Empire. Analyzing a wide array of sources, from plantation correspondence, political economy treatises, and novels to newspapers, socialist programs, and memoirs, Taylor shows how the Americas came to serve as a real and figurative site at which abandoned West Indians sought to imagine and invent postliberal forms of political subjecthood.
