Download or read book Matches written by S. D. Chrostowska and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2019-04-10 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It takes any number of forms. Epigrams. Aphorisms. Fragments. Sayings. Dicta. Sententiae. Facetiae. Pearls of wisdom. Fractions of truth. Maxims. Definitions. Jottings. Miscellaneous musings. Meditations. Ricordi. Pensées. Ephemera. Miniatures. Sketches. Vignettes. Denkbilder. Capriccios. Tiny 'fires without flames' ... In returning to these genres, Matches goes back to the drawing board of modern critique. It sets out to rekindle short-form literary-philosophical reflection, with roots in the Antiquity of Heraclitus and Hippocrates, apogee in the French moralistes (La Rochefoucauld, Pascal, Chamfort ...), and late splendour in German letters (Nietzsche, Kraus, Jünger ...). Moving from art and aesthetics to philosophies past and present, through natural and technological landscapes, beneath the constellations of politics, history and ethics, along the byways of contemporary literary culture--the slow reader with a little spare time will not fail to be struck. Here are pages to peruse and mistrust, texts to think with, a book to put down and ponder, to ponder and put down. A tome to keep handy, handle often, and strike repeatedly against the rough patches of the mind.

Book excerpt: The Wheel of Time is now an original series on Prime Video, starring Rosamund Pike as Moiraine! With Robert Jordan’s untimely passing in 2007, Brandon Sanderson, the New York Times bestselling author of the Mistborn novels and the Stormlight Archive, was chosen by Jordan’s editor—his wife, Harriet McDougal—to complete the final volume in The Wheel of Time®, later expanded to three books. In A Memory of Light, the fourteenth and concluding novel in Jordan’s #1 New York Times bestselling epic fantasy series, the armies of Light gather to fight in Tarmon Gai’don, the Last Battle, to save the Westland nations from the shadow forces of the Dark One. Rand al’Thor, the Dragon Reborn, is ready to fulfill his destiny. To defeat the enemy that threatens them all, he must convince his reluctant allies that his plan—as foolhardy and dangerous as it appears—is their only chance to stop the Dark One’s ascension and secure a lasting peace. But if Rand’s course of action fails, the world will be engulfed in shadow. Across the land, Mat, Perrin, and Egwene engage in battle with Shadowspawn, Trollocs, Darkfriends, and other creatures of the Blight. Sacrifices are made, lives are lost, but victory is unassured. For when Rand confronts the Dark One in Shayol Ghul, he is bombarded with conflicting visions of the future that reveal there is more at stake for humanity than winning the war. Since its debut in 1990, The Wheel of Time® by Robert Jordan has captivated millions of readers around the globe with its scope, originality, and compelling characters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They left in the middle of the night—often carrying little more than the knowledge to follow the North Star. Between 1830 and the end of the Civil War in 1865, an estimated one hundred thousand slaves became passengers on the Underground Railroad, a journey of untold hardship, in search of freedom. In Through Darkness to Light: Photographs Along the Underground Railroad, Jeanine Michna-Bales presents a remarkable series of images following a route from the cotton plantations of central Louisiana, through the cypress swamps of Mississippi and the plains of Indiana, north to the Canadian border— a path of nearly fourteen hundred miles. The culmination of a ten-year research quest, Through Darkness to Light imagines a journey along the Underground Railroad as it might have appeared to any freedom seeker. Framing the powerful visual narrative is an introduction by Michna-Bales; a foreword by noted politician, pastor, and civil rights activist Andrew J. Young; and essays by Fergus M. Bordewich, Robert F. Darden, and Eric R. Jackson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skip Jordan and his friends have faced the powers of darkness before; they have confronted the deceptions of witchcraft, and done battle with demonic entities. They have seen The Veil of Deception, and prevailed against seemingly impossible odds, but what they are called to face now is more ominous than anything they have known before. Skip Jordan is dreaming again. Their former friend Roger Wilson, missing for almost a year, appears in the dream. He also sees Ntambo, the African preacher who had saved Skip from death when he was only four years old. Against the backdrop of Victoria Falls in Africa, or, as the locals know it, The Smoke That Thunders, he sees his black friend hounded over the edge into the gorge below. Skip has no doubt the dream is a call for he and his friends to launch a rescue mission to save Roger, and others, from the clutches of witchcraft. Only two months short of his fifteenth birthday, they leave for Africa on an adventure that could very well be their last. They face attacks from demons, lying wonders, and end up in a secret place known as The Lion s Den. In this evil place no escape is possible; only death awaits them. Will their faith be sufficient to carry them through? Will their youth and inexperience cause them to fail? Or is there help on the way, both human and divine, that will lead them to final victory? This second volume in the SKIP JORDAN series, told with a blend of fantasy, drama and adventure, cannot fail to excite, challenge, and bless all who read it

Many go to great lengths to be remembered, creating the larger cemetery monuments, establishing endowments in their names, and seeing to it that named bridges, roads, and buildings continue their memory. And who intends to forget them? But it often happens, nonetheless. "Living Light" is a focus of writing to preserve memory, specifically on what made each of the strongest influences in my life most memorable to me. Glimpses of the life of each of these individuals are presented in such a way as to illustrate the Light of faith I saw shining through their life. These of whom you may read, were all significant, unique, Living Lights in my life. As I pondered and worked to complete this set of writings, I could begin to see better the connection and influence of each of these individuals in what I think today, and in all I was writing. Clearly, to me it was time to build this anthology of memory. The writing of each entry is meant to honor and preserve the memory of the person whose story I am telling. But, the greater inspiration to write this comes from the pages of the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus is recorded saying, in chapter 5, verse 6, "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in Heaven." The "works" of each of these individuals became Living Light to me, shining on steps of the "Way of Light" that is revealed as the best way of life for our travels here and now. I am so grateful to The Father for each one of these people who have been so very significant in my life, and I write that their works may shine on. Yes, I have written in the hope that the people, about whom these words are written, will not be forgotten. In recognizing the Light that each of these individuals was able to shine in his or her unique way, the greatest hope is that God will be glorified through the stories of their lives.

This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This century has seen the development of technologies for manipulating and controlling matter and light at the level of individual photons and atoms, a realm in which physics is fully quantum mechanical. The dominant experimental technology is the laser, and the theoretical paradigm is quantum optics. The Quantum World of Ultra-Cold Atoms and Light is a trilogy, which presents the quantum optics way of thinking and its applications to quantum devices. This book — Foundations of Quantum Optics — provides an introductory text on the theoretical techniques of quantum optics, containing the elements of what one needs to teach, learn, and “think” about quantum optics. There is a particular emphasis on the classical and quantum stochastic methods which have come to dominate the field. Book II will cover applications to quantum devices, such as quantum computers and simulators, and will include the more advanced techniques necessary to describe non-classical light fields. Book III will cover the field of ultra-cold atoms, for which the quantum-optical paradigm has proved to be highly applicable for quantitative work. Book excerpt: This century has seen the development of technologies for manipulating and controlling matter and light at the level of individual photons and atoms, a realm in which physics is fully quantum-mechanical. The dominant experimental technology is the laser, and the theoretical paradigm is quantum optics. The Quantum World of Ultra-Cold Atoms and Light is a trilogy, which presents the quantum optics way of thinking and its applications to quantum devices. This book — The Physics of Quantum-Optical Devices — provides a comprehensive treatment of theoretical quantum optics. It covers applications to the optical manipulation of the quantum states of atoms, laser cooling, continuous measurement, quantum computers and quantum processors, superconducting systems and quantum networks. The subject is consistently formulated in terms of quantum stochastic techniques, and a systematic and thorough development of these techniques is a central part of the book. There is also a compact overview of the ideas of quantum information theory. The main aim of the book is to present the theoretical techniques necessary for the understanding of quantum optical devices, with special attention to those devices used in quantum information processing and quantum simulation. Although these techniques were developed originally for the optical regime, they are also applicable to electromagnetic radiation from the microwave realm to the ultra-violet, and for atomic systems, Josephson junction systems, quantum dots and nano-mechanical systems.
