Book Synopsis Blue Light of the Screen by : Claire Cronin
Download or read book Blue Light of the Screen written by Claire Cronin and published by Watkins Media Limited. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blue Light of the Screen is a memoir about the author's obsession with horror and the supernatural. Blue Light of the Screen is about what it means to be afraid -- about immersion, superstition, delusion, and the things that keep us up at night. A creative-critical memoir of the author's obsession with the horror genre, Blue Light of the Screen embeds its criticism of horror within a larger personal story of growing up in a devoutly Catholic family, overcoming suicidal depression, uncovering intergenerational trauma, and encountering real and imagined ghosts. As Cronin writes, she positions herself as a protagonist who is haunted by what she watches and reads, like an antiquarian in an M.R. James ghost story whose sense of reality unravels through her study of arcane texts and cursed archives. In this way, Blue Light of the Screen tells the story of the author's conversion from skepticism to faith in the supernatural. Part memoir, part ghost story, and part critical theory, Blue Light of the Screen is not just a book about horror, but a work of horror itself.

Book Synopsis The Post-Screen Through Virtual Reality, Holograms and Light Projections by : DR. ENG Jenna Ng

This book was released on 2021-10-14 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Screens are ubiquitous today. They display information; present image worlds; are portable; connect to mobile networks; mesmerize. However, contemporary screen media also seek to eliminate the presence of the screen and the visibilities of its boundaries. As what is image becomes increasingly indistinguishable against the viewer's actual surroundings, this unsettling prompts re-examination about not only what is the screen, but also how the screen demarcates and what it stands for in relation to our understanding of our realities in, outside and against images. Through case studies drawn from three media technologies - Virtual Reality; holograms; and light projections - this book develops new theories of the surfaces on and spaces in which images are displayed today, interrogating critical lines between art and life; virtuality and actuality; truth and lies. What we have today is not just the contestation of the real against illusion or the unreal, but the disappearance itself of difference and a gluttony of the unreal which both connect up to current politics of distorted truth values and corrupted terms of information. The Post-Screen Through Virtual Reality, Holograms and Light Projections: Where Screen Boundaries Lie is thus about not only where the image's borders and demarcations are established, but also the screen boundary as the instrumentation of today's intense virtualizations that do not tell the truth. In all this, a new imagination for images emerges, with a new space for cultures of presence and absence, definitions of object and representation, and understandings of dis- and re-placement - the post-screen.

Book Synopsis Physical and Optical Properties of Projection Screens by : Robert J. Klaiber
Download or read book Physical and Optical Properties of Projection Screens written by Robert J. Klaiber and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scattered, inconsistent and incomplete data in the literature have prompted a comprehensive study of the physical and optical properties of projection screens. A large sample number of front and rear projection screens was obtained, representing the industry line of January 1965. The reflected and transmitted flux distribution of each sample was measured using a small, collimated test beam of white light incident normally and at 45 degrees. A vacuum photodetector, spectrally matched to the eye, was situated on a radius arm and capable of viewing the test sample at any angle in a plane. The reflectance or transmittance of the samples was calculated using data from the measured reflected flux distribution of an easily reproduced magnesium oxide standard. Measurements were made of resolving power and physical properties, and the maximum angular viewing field of each screen was determined for a typical projection geometry and tolerable field brightness gradient. Book Synopsis Ambient Screens and Transnational Public Spaces by : Nikos Papastergiadis
Download or read book Ambient Screens and Transnational Public Spaces written by Nikos Papastergiadis and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large public screens have now become a ubiquitous part of the contemporary cityscape. Far from being simply oversized televisions, the media experts contributing to Ambient Screens and Transnational Public Spaces put forward a strong case that such screens could serve as important sites for cultural exchange. Advances in digital technology spell the possibilities of conducting mobile modes of interaction across national boundaries, and in the process expose the participants to novel sensory experiences, giving rise to a new form of public culture. Understanding this phenomenon calls for a reconceptualization of “public space” and “ambience,” as well as connecting the two concepts with each other. This pioneering study of the impact of media platforms on urban cultural life presents a theoretical analysis and a history of screens, followed by discussions of site-specific urban screen practices on five continents. There is also a substantial examination of the world’s first real-time cross-cultural exchange via the networking of large public screens located in Melbourne and Seoul. “Ambient Screens and Transnational Public Spaces is a provocative interdisciplinary collection that studies public screens in diverse urban contexts ranging from Shanghai to Montreal. Taken together, these essays redefine commonly held notions about cultural policy, information, citizenship, and the quotidian experiences of the Media City. A must read for anyone interested in urban media studies and cultural planning.” —Janine Marchessault, Professor of Cinema and Media Studies, York University “Large screens in public spaces are almost taken for granted in some cities, while in others, they are barely present. This fascinating book provokes new thinking about mediatization as a transformative dimension of urban life. The editor and authors deserve to be congratulated for a welcome and timely volume, demonstrating how large screens in cities transform public spaces and become a platform for new modes of cultural exchange.” —Lily Kong, Lee Kong Chian Chair Professor of Social Sciences, Singapore Management University
