Book excerpt: This volume contains most of the papers presented at the "Workshop on Quasielastic Light Scattering Studies of Fluids and Macromolecular Solutions" held at CISE, Segrate (Milano), Italy, from 11 to 13 May, 1979. Quasielastic light scattering (also called self-beating spectroscopy or intensity correlation spectroscopy) is the technique, introduced by Benedek and coworkers and by Cummins and coworkers about 15 years ago, by which dynamical information about a scattering medium is obtained through the measurement of the power spectrum (or the intensity correlation function) of the laser light scattered from the medium. The technique received in the early seventies a considerable impulse from the development of real-time fast digital correlators. The aim of the Workshop was to bring together a selected number of researchers in order to discuss recent developments in quasielastic light scattering and related optical methods and to report about new applications of the technique in physics, chemistry and biology. The first two days of the meeting were devoted to the oral presentations of papers. In the third day an informal session was held which included a very lively and thorough discussion of the highlights of the Workshop. Most part of the technical problems were debated during the informal session and during the subsequent visits to the light scattering laboratory in CISE.

Book excerpt: An Introduction to Dynamic Light Scattering by Macromolecules provides an introduction to the basic concepts of dynamic light scattering (DLS), with an emphasis on the interpretation of DLS data. It presents the appropriate equations used to interpret DLS data. The material is presented in order of increasing complexity of the systems under examination, ranging from dilute solutions of noninteracting particles to concentrated multicomponent solutions of strongly interacting particles and gels. Problems are presented at the end of each chapter to emphasize these concepts. Since a major emphasis of this textbook is the interpretation of DLS data obtained by polarized light scattering studies on macromolecular solutions, the results of complementary experimental techniques are also presented in order to gain insight into the dynamics of these systems. This textbook is intended for (1) advanced undergraduate students and graduate students in the chemical, physical, and biological sciences; (2) scientists who might wish to apply DLS methods to systems of interest to them but who have no formal training in the field of DLS; and (3) those who are simply curious as to the type of information that might be obtained from DLS techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2-volume set includes extensive discussions of scattering techniques (light, neutron and X-ray) and related fluctuation and grating techniques that are at the forefront of this field. Most of the scattering techniques are Fourier space techniques. Recent advances have seen the development of powerful direct imaging methods such as atomic force microscopy and scanning probe microscopy. In addition, techniques that can be used to manipulate soft matter on the nanometer scale are also in rapid development. These include the scanning probe microscopy technique mentioned above as well as optical and magnetic tweezers.

Book excerpt: It had been pointed out several years ago that light scattering in flowing systems should allow one to determine the shape of rigid macromolecules and rigid submicroscopic particles and the degree of hydrodynamic deformation of flexible macromolecules. The light scattering increment expected on flow of the former type of systems was verified some time ago for aqueous solutions of tobacco mosaic virus and for aqueous dispersions of colloidal crystals. In extensive experiments the effect was verified also for the second type of systems. The present preliminary communication is concerned with some of the results obtained. (Author).

Book excerpt: Classical light scattering from dilute polymer solutions is one of the few absolute, rigorously founded methods for the determination of molar mass and molecular size of macromolecular substances, and for the quantitative characterization of solute-solvent interaction. Light scattering is thus one of the most fundamental methods of the physical chemistry of polymers, and the present book provides an introduction to this technique. elements of practice and application of light scattering. Although there are a number of advanced monographs and reviews currently available on light scattering from polymer solutions, the appearance of this book marks the first introductory text of its kind. Polymer chemists wishing to make a start in light scattering will find this book an indispensable aid in their work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The measurement of light scattering by particles is employed in the majority of science and engineering fields. The universal importance of electromagnetic scattering, combined with recent developments in efficient numerical algorithms and experimental techniques, is helping expand the scope and utility of scattering in various fields of geophysics. Light scattering, a sub-discipline of optics, is a fundamental sensing technique that is routinely used in a wide range of applications. For example, optical techniques permit comprehensive characterization of small particles, such as marine phytoplankton. Phytoplankton can alter the spectral content of sunlight back-scattered by seawater. This alteration can be detected from space, thus permitting efficient monitoring of the ocean's productivity. In addition, sensors that utilize light scattering for characterizing particles have applications in oceanography, remote sensing, meteorology, chemical engineering, and medical diagnostics. The authors' area of expertise is in applying scattering techniques for non-destructive characterization/testing of environmental fluids with particles. This book illuminates fundamental questions facing experimenters and modelers of light scattering by water-borne particles, and provides a comprehensive resource for researchers. *Extensive reference section provides handy compilations of knowledge on the designs of light scattering meters, sources of experimental data, and more *Worked exercises and examples throughout
