Book excerpt: Excerpt from Light for Students This book has been written to meet the requirements of students who wish to obtain an accurate and comprehensive knowledge of Geometrical and Physical Optics. In many instances results of recent researches are described, in connection with important laws which they elucidate. The mathematical investigations have, in all cases, been rendered as simple as possible, and have been developed so as to direct attention to the physical aspect of the subject. No knowledge of the Calculus is assumed on the part of the student. A number of illustrative experiments which may readily be performed are fully described, and numerous questions, mostly selected from public examination papers, are appended. The first ten chapters are devoted to Geometrical Optics, i.e., to explaining the consequences of the laws of Reflection and Refraction of Light. Some of the most important optical instruments, including the eye, are dealt with. Points which commonly present difficulties to students, such, for example, as the method of achromatising an eye-piece, are explained in considerable detail. The remaining ten chapters are devoted to the development of the Wave Theory of Light. While ample attention is devoted to the more elementary parts of the subject, full explanations are also given of many points not usually dealt with in books of similar scope; as instances, the investigation of the velocity of transverse waves in an elastic solid, and Sellmeier's Theory of Dispersion, may be mentioned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Light This book is intended for students who have been through a first year's physics course and who are proceeding further with the study of light. It differs from other books on light by a more systematic treatment, also by dealing with the full s00pe of the subject and including the results of recent investigations. A good knowledge of elementary mathematics is assumed. The calculus is used, but I hope that the results Obtained by its aid will be intelligible to those who cannot follow the inter mediate steps, and in any case the greater part of the book is free from it. Of the 328 figures more than '270 have been specially drawn for the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lights to Literature, Vol. 4: Revised The purpose throughout the Lights to Literature Series of Readers is to furnish standard literature suited to pupils in the elementary schools. For a large majority of children, the time covered by the fifth and sixth years of school marks a transition in interest from the myth and fairy story to subjects of chivalry, adventure, history, science, and gen eral literature. The material of Book Four forms a natural and easy sequence to Book Three, and meets this advancing interest of the pupils. It fur nishes from the pens of the best authors, tales of chivalry, accounts of national heroes and events, descriptions of nature and of invention, and a large number of selections from classic writers in verse and fiction. These selections from the several departments of general literature will give the reader a personal knowledge of the sources of good read ing. Whenever selections have been made from larger works the title of the latter has been given at the close of the selection. This will serve as a guide to the pupil in his home reading. The selections are all in the language of the authors, and will intro duce the reader to the styles and qualities of individual writers. This acquaintance will form a basis for intelligent discrimination in the matter of reading, and at the same time develop the pupil's power in the use of language. Excellent portraits and carefully prepared biographical sketches of each author are given. These will add to the pupil's interest and give him valuable aid in his further investigations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Light IN undertaking the preparation of this fourth edition I felt, both on account of my respect for its late author and because the book has been so successful, that I ought to leave untouched, as far as possible, the main body of the text. Accordingly in this respect changes have only been made where such were necessary, in order to correct the few errors or inaccuracies which I have noticed, or to which I have seen attention directed occasionally in scientific papers. I have not considered it necessary to mark these alterations in any special way, but I gladly acknowledge here the assistance which such references have given me.
