Book excerpt: Previous research efforts in mimicking the compound eye of Musca domestica, the common house fly, in hardware have primarily been focused on optical designs to achieve the fast, analog, parallel processing and motion hyperacuity properties of the biological system. While these optical platforms have shown promising results, nearly all proposed advantages of utilizing a fly-inspired sensor have been discovered through the use of software simulation with very little or no effort being made to validate these simulations using the actual fly-inspired optics. In effect, these simulations can be viewed as the first step into mimicking the function of the intermediate neural layer structure (the lamina) of the fly's visual system. The lamina is believed to perform preprocessing on image data, extracting motion and object information from the scene before sending it to the brain. The work presented in this dissertation advances the frontier of compound vision research by mimicking the function of the lamina structure in hardware. The hardware designs were kept as biomimetic as possible: no system clocks were used, system-wide parallel operation was never violated, and discrete-time (digital) solutions were not considered unless absolutely necessary. In addition, the unique motion hyperacuity characteristic of Musca's visual system was preserved in each circuit design. The specific lamina functions that were mimicked in device-level electronics are the light adaptation process and a software proposed edge detection process. It will be shown that an effective light adaptation system can be designed that is both analog and parallel by directly mimicking the fly's visual system. It will also be shown that the edge detection system can be designed to utilize the underlying structure that allows for motion hyperacuity to improve the accuracy of locating small linear objects such as power lines. The proof-of-concept designs presented in this dissertation are an important first step in turning the novel compound optical designs of the past decade into useful sensors that can function in dynamic real-world environments and that are capable of on-board biomimetic image processing.

Book excerpt: Previous research efforts have shown that the compound vision system of a common house fly, Musca domestica, is capable of improved motion detection and tracking capabilities when compared to traditional camera systems. Especially in applications requiring object detection, obstacle avoidance, and quick visual data processing, these compound vision sensors are more suitable as compared to the usual mammalian inspired vision systems. Proof-of-concept has shown that even without using a computer processing system, existing compound vision sensors can mimic the motion hyperacuity characteristic of the fly's visual system and at the same time provide near instantaneous edge detection and motion tracking. However, the existing sensor design consists of seven photodiodes which generate artifacts in the output signal. This type of sensor design has been implemented in analog circuitry and was found to have limited capability to detect different types of edges. Therefore, to advance the state-of-art of existing fly eye vision sensors, certain design changes were done in this work to avoid these signal artifacts. Moreover, a digital equivalent of the existing analog circuitry has been designed and tested without losing the motion hyperactivity characteristic of the sensor. Furthermore, for the existing seven photodiode sensor designs, an improved edge detection algorithm has been designed that correctly classifies horizontal and vertical edges as the previous design could but can now also correctly detect and classify diagonal edges. Taking a step further, a multi-cartridge sensor design has been proposed that can further enhance the sensor's capability to detect single edges as well as correctly classify the corners present in the sensor's field-of-view.

This work is critical in the proper analysis of previously captured electrophysiology recordings. Additionally, the model of the cartridge structure within the fly's vision system has been augmented to include sensor orientation, light adaptation, lateral inhibition, and spot location features. These enhancements will guide the design and development of the next generation of physical sensors.

Hence, the membrane must exhibit three bands of absorp tion - the principal band with its peak within the limits of visible spectrum (or a-peak); the secondary band between 340 and 380 nm (S peak); and the third, protein band, in the ultraviolet (UV) at 280 nm (COLLINS et al. , 1952). The main peak of absorption is located within the range 433-575 nm for retinol-based pigments and between 438 and 620 nm for 3-dehydroretinol-based pigments, the position of Amax de pending on many ecological factors.
