Book excerpt: Strategies to influence the steric and electronic properties of three classes of ligands were investigated. First, a compound class known as amino-dithiaphospholanes was studied. It is structurally related to phosphoramidites, which have been successfully applied in catalysis. The synthesis of amino-dithiaphospholanes was envisaged as an approach to electronically tuned phosphoramidites. General access to a variety of structurally modified amino-dithiaphospholanes from commercially available starting materials was developed. The electron donating properties of the new ligands were characterized by NMR. They were found to be more electron-donating than the corresponding phosphoramidites. The coordination chemistry of amino-dithiaphospholanes was investigated by synthesis of a series of iridium and rhodium complexes. Analysis of the physical data obtained for the complexes confirmed the increase in the electron density at the metal centers as a consequence of the increased basicity of the ligands. Second, a series of new, as well as known, phosphinooxazoline (PHOX) ligands was synthesized. A systematic study of structure-property relationships was performed with the PHOX ligands. It was shown that electronic tuning of the ligands is possible by varying the substituents on the phenyl ring. However, the tuning was seen to have unexpected, and often only minor influence on the electronic properties of the metal complexes. The efficiency of steric tuning was investigated by evaluation of X-ray structure analysis data of new iron PHOX complexes synthesized for the study. It was shown that the presence of substituents in the position a to the nitrogen atom of the oxazoline ring had the most profound impact on the geometries of the corresponding metal complexes. Finally, five new multidentate N, O donating ligands (L) were synthesized and characterized. Their coordination chemistry was investigated by preparation of new iron complexes mimicking naturally occurring non-heme enzymes. The general formulation [Fe(L)2](OTf)2, [Fe(L)(OTf)2] or [Fe(L)(OTf)](OTf) was established for the new complexes, and formation of only one isomer was confirmed for one of the complexes. The catalytic activity of the new compounds was demonstrated in the oxidation of activated methylene groups and alcohols to the corresponding ketones.

Les ligands amputés HLC (21) et H3LD (22) réagissent avec divers cations de métaux de transition pour donner des complexes, conçus afin d'être utilisés comme coenzymes pour les anticorps catalytiques. Le complexe du nickel [Ni2(LC)](CF3COO)3(MeOH) a également été caractérisé par diffraction de rayons X. Des pseudo-énantiomères de ligands phosphine-phosphinites POPo-An (2) et o-AnPOP (4)ont été synthétisés. Le complexe du platine [Pt(o-AnPOP)Cl2] (7) a été caractérisé par diffraction de rayons X. In this thesis studies concerning a series of new bidentate donor ligands employing both the NHC and PYA donor groups for use in transition metal catalysis is presented. The successful synthesis of the bidentate ligand N,N'-dimethyl-N''-pyridin-4-yl nicotinamide with both a remote NHC and PYA donor groups is reported, along with the synthesis of the precursor materials 1-methyl-3-(2-oxo-2-(pyridin-2-ylamino)ethyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium and 1-methyl-3-(2-oxo-2-(pyridin-4-ylamino)ethyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium for the formation of other bidentate ligands incorporating the imidazolium NHC and PYA donor groups. The iridium complex IrH(L-R4)(CO)(PPh3)2 containing the new ligand L-R4 was prepared through reaction of N,N'-dimethyl-N''-pyridin-4-yl nicotinamide with Vaskas Complex. Chapter one explains the ideology behind green chemistry and our constant drive to maintain a clean and green planet. Chapter two describes the effect of donor groups on a metal centre with focus on the NHC and PYA donor groups and their advantages over previous work in this area. Chapter three describes the development of synthetic routes to the new target ligands and chapter four explains the studies involving the metal precursor substrates and ligand coordination. Chapter five contains details of the relevant experimental data. The work described in this thesis will provide an excellent starting point for those wishing to further explore the synthesis and study of bidentate NHC and PYA donor ligands in catalysis by transition metals.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents detailed mechanistic studies on a series of important C-H activation reactions using combined computational methods and mass spectrometry experiments. It also provides guidance on the design and improvement of catalysts and ligands. The reactions investigated include: (i) a nitrile-containing template-assisted meta-selective C-H activation, (ii) Pd/mono-N-protected amino acid (MPAA) catalyzed meta-selective C-H activation, (iii) Pd/MPAA catalyzed asymmetric C-H activation reactions, and (iv) Cu-catalyzed sp3 C-H cross-dehydrogenative-coupling reaction. The book reports on a novel dimeric Pd-M (M = Pd or Ag) model for reaction (i), which successfully explains the meta-selectivity observed experimentally. For reaction (ii), with a combined DFT/MS method, the author successfully reveals the roles of MPAA ligands and a new C-H activation mechanism, which accounts for the improved reactivity and high meta-selectivity and opens new avenues for ligand design. She subsequently applies ion-mobility mass spectrometry to capture and separate the [Pd(MPAA)(substrate)] complex at different stages for the first time, providing support for the internal-base model for reaction (iii). Employing DFT studies, she then establishes a chirality relay model that can be widely applied to MPAA-assisted asymmetric C-H activation reactions. Lastly, for reaction (iv) the author conducts detailed computational studies on several plausible pathways for Cu/O2 and Cu/TBHP systems and finds a reliable method for calculating the single electron transfer (SET) process on the basis of benchmark studies.

Book excerpt: The ability of gold(I) to activate many types of unsaturated bonds toward nucleophilic attack was not widely recognized until the early 2000s. One major challenge in gold catalysis is the control over regioselectivity when there are two or more possible products as a result of complicated mechanistic pathways. It is well know that the choice of ligand can have dramatic effects on which pathway is being followed but very rarely are the reasons for this selectivity understood. The synthesis of new acyclic diaminocarbenes was developed and a study of the ligand effects on the regioselectivity of a gold-catalyzed domino enyne cyclization hydroarylation reaction and a Nazarov cyclization was undertaken. New chiral acyclic diaminocarbenes were also developed and tested along side new C3-symmetric phosphite ligands in an asymmetric intramolecular hydroamination of allenes. Structure activity correlations were developed for the potential use in further rational ligand design. The synthesis of 6a,7-dihydro-5-amino-dibenzo[c,g]chromene derivatives via a gold-catalyzed domino reaction of alkynylbenzaldehydes in the presence of secondary amines was developed. These were sent to be screened for biological activity.
