Experimental evidence has been given by changes in structural properties of nuclei such as the shell closures. The evolution of shell structure is gradual and must be studied by looking systematically at isotopic or isotonic nuclear chains. Studies of these chains can deepen the understanding of shell structures, magic numbers and the collective natures of nuclei far from stability. The neutron rich silicon isotopes display evidence of shell evolution seen in the ratio of the low-lying excitation energies. 34Si has a closed shell nature with a proton bubble structure which evolves along the isotopic chain to the absence of the N=28 shell closure expected in 42Si. Another complementary way to probe these changes is by studying the reduced transition rates of the first 2+ and 4+ states. The ratio of the reduced transition rates has characteristic values for different collective modes. However, these values are not known for isotopes that are more neutron rich than 30Si. The reduced transition rates can be compared to various theoretical models to understand the changes taking place in this neutron-rich region. This work discusses an experiment that studied 36Si and 38Si to determine the lifetimes of their excited states and to determine the reduced transition rates of the first 2+ and 4+ states in both nuclei. From these B(E2) values, the ratio is calculated and compared to the collective models and shell model calculations. The recoil distance measurement was conducted at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory using the S800 Spectrograph, the GRETINA array, and the TRIPLEX plunger. The experiment successfully measured the lifetimes of the 2+1 and 4+1 states in 38Si and the 4+1 and 6+1 states in 36Si. Results from the measurement included the confirmation of the 2383-keV state in 38Si that had only been seen once before. The B(E2) values determined from the experiment indicate the reduced collectivity for the first 4+ states of 36,38Si indicating the persistence of the N=20 magic number through 36Si and 38Si.

The present paper will concentrate on recent results on neutron-rich Sr, Zr and Mo nuclei with N= 58--64. These isotopes are of particular interest because of the way their shapes change as a function of both proton and neutron number. The basic characteristics of these shape changes have been established for some time by[beta] decay studies of low-spin states. The new data on prompt[gamma] rays extend the knowledge of the behavior of these nuclei quite considerably. The great sensitivity of Ge arrays has lead to the observation of non-yrast bands, providing more detailed information on nuclear structure; the large number of detectors and the geometry of the CLOVER detectors incorporated into EUROGAM II have allowed the measurement of angular correlations and linear polarizations, putting spin and parity assignments on to a firm footing; a further advance in the study of fission fragment spectroscopy is the determination of the lifetimes of yrast states by a new Doppler attenuation technique. These lifetime measurements give new information on the way nuclear shapes change as a function of rotational frequency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lifetimes of the rotational levels in neutron-rich even-even Nd isotopes were deduced from the analysis of the Doppler broadened line shapes. The experiment was performed at Daresbury with the Eurogam array, which at that time consisted of 45 Compton-suppressed Ge detectors and 5 Low-Energy Photon Spectrometers. The source was in the form of a 7-mm pellet which was prepared by mixing 5-mg; 248Cm and 65-mg KCl and pressing it under high pressure. Events for which three or more detectors fired were used to construct a cubic data array whose axes represented the [gamma]-ray energies and the contents of each channel the number of events with that particular combination of [gamma]-ray energies. From this cubic array, one-dimensional spectra were generated by placing gates on peaks on the other two axes. Gamma-ray spectra of even-even Nd isotopes were obtained by gating on the transitions in the complimentary Kr fragments. The gamma peaks de-exciting states with I ≥ 12 h were found to be broader than the instrumental line width due to the Doppler effect. The line shapes of they-ray peaks were fitted separately with a simple model for the feeding of the states and assuming a rotational band with constant intrinsic quadruple moment and these are shown in Fig. I-27. The quadrupole moments thus determined were found to be in good agreement with the quadrupole moments measured previously for lower spin states. Because of the success of this technique for the Nd isotopes, we intend to apply this technique to the new larger data set collected with the Eurogam II array. The results of this study were published.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the exciting discovery of every isotope observed on earth to date, which currently numbers some 3000. The discoveries are arranged in chapters according to the observation techniques or production methods. Each chapter contains tables listing the first authors of the first publication as well as details about the production and detection methods used. At the end, a comprehensive table lists all isotopes sorted by elements. The book is based on individual paragraphs for each isotope, which were published over the last few years as separate articles in the journal “Atomic Data and Nuclear Data Tables”. The work re-evaluates all prior assignments judging them with a uniform set of criteria. In addition, the author includes over 100 new isotopes which have been discovered since the articles published. This book is a source of information for researchers as well as enthusiastic laymen alike. From the prepublication review: “The explanations focus on the essentials, which makes the various chapters pleasingly compact. The phrasing is well understandable also for non-experts. This makes the book easy to read, even thrilling. I have to confess that parts of the manuscript I was even reading as an evening lecture in the bed, so exciting was the history of isotope discoveries.” Sigurd Hofmann, Helmholtz Professor at GSI Darmstadt, Germany, and a leading expert in superheavy nuclei

Book excerpt: Over ten years ago, U.S. nuclear scientists proposed construction of a new rare isotope accelerator in the United States, which would enable experiments to elucidate the important questions in nuclear physics. To help assess this proposal, DOE and NSF asked the NRC to define the science agenda for a next-generation U.S. Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). As the study began, DOE announced a substantial reduction in the scope of this facility and put off its initial operation date by several years. The study focused on an evaluation of the science that could be accomplished on a facility reduced in scope. This report provides a discussion of the key science drivers for a FRIB, an assessment of existing domestic and international rare isotope beams, an assessment of the current U.S. position about the FRIB, and a set of findings and conclusions about the scientific and policy context for such a facility.

Book excerpt: There is a great interest in improving the limits on neutron lifetime to the level of a precision of 0.1 s. The neutron lifetime is both an important fundamental quantity as well as a parameter influencing important processes such as nucleosynthesis (Helium production in the early universe) and the rate of energy production in the Sun.Aiming to create a roadmap of R&D for a next generation neutron lifetime experiment that can be endorsed by the North American neutron community, the focus of the workshop was on experiments using traps that utilize ultracold neutrons and confinement by a combination of magnetic and/or gravitational interaction in order to avoid systematic uncertainties introduced by neutron interactions with material walls. The papers in this volume summarize the limitations of present experiments, the discussion of new experiments in planning stage, and the discussion of systematic effects that must be addressed to achieve a lifetime measurement at an accuracy of 0.1 second.Cover image courtesy of Elena Fernández, Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Book excerpt: The monograph describes the properties of the lightest nuclei with large excess of neutrons. The results of theoretical and experimental studies of neutron-rich isotopes with 1 ≤ Z ≤ 20 are presented while also changes in the structure of nuclei when going away from the line of β-stability are discussed. Information presented is on the mass, radii of distribution of nuclear matter, energy levels for excited states of these nuclei, the possibility of manifestation of a halo, as well as the deformation of nuclei and the quantum properties of ground states. The position of the boundary of nucleon stability for these nuclei is considered. The effects associated with weakening and even the disappearing influence of standard magic numbers and the appearance of new ones are discussed. The results presented in the book will be useful in other fields of science as well, including astrophysics.
