Book excerpt: As the world moves closer to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, it seems that the whole earth is in turmoil. In the Bible we find that the Savior himself foretold such events. But we are also told that the Lord's followers will find refuge. How will that occur, and where will that happen? In 1999, Suzanne Freeman briefly passed away during surgery before returning to mortality. While in the spirit world, she was taken by the Savior to the Window of Life. In this heavenly window, she was shown scenes of future world events, including natural disasters and warfare that will impact everyone on earth. The Lord's followers will be affected, but they will band together against their enemies. Those who are prepared to weather these trials will be ready to meet their Savior. Suzanne was told to share what she had seen when she returned to earth. Her message is a story of the faith and courage that Christ's followers will display in the coming years leading to the Savior's millennial reign.

As you can read in the intro of the book, they have come from less than 10 years of my life, and most have been within the last 6 months or so of this writing. If I were to choose one to say it was my favorite, I would have to go with "Scenery". There are others I like as well, but in my opinion, it expresses a certain emotion. What will your favorite be?

Book excerpt: Even for a woman as sensitive to wild animals as Grace 1Spruch, the arrival of a squirrel inside her Greenwich Village apartment one morning came as something of a surprise. She had always loved the squirrels she saw in Washington Square Park, but she never met one so forward as the one climbing up her rubber plant. Dr. Spruch didn't know it then, but this was the beginning of a strange and wonderful relationship. Gradually, other squirrels began to climb the fire escape to the Spruchs' fifth-story window. All were welcomed -- with certain restrictions, of course. There were regular office hours, and the squirrels soon learned not to scratch at the window until given the signal -- stirring within the apartment. Some were bold about walking right into the house, examining the Spruchs' possessions, and burying their nuts under pillows. One categorically refused to leave at closing time, even when rudely chased. Others, more retiring, were content to munch nuts and fruits on the windowsill. Since Spruch is a scientist as well as an animal lover, her observations gain a special force and precision, and she manages to achieve the best kind of popular science writing: scientifically sound, carefully observed, intellectually challenging. Despite our familiarity with squirrels as part of the urban landscape, surprisingly little is known about the habits of these creatures, and Spruch is able to make some interesting contributions to this subject. But most of all, this is a book for animal lovers -- a loving, yet unsentimental account of a fascinating episode in the natural history of a large city.

Book excerpt: A gorgeous, expressive picture-book biography of Marc Chagall by the Caldecott Honor team behind The Noisy Paint Box. Through the window, the student sees . . . His future--butcher, baker, blacksmith, but turns away. A classmate sketching a face from a book. His mind blossoms. The power of pictures. He draws and erases, dreams in color while Papa worries. A folder of pages laid on an art teacher's desk. Mama asks, Does this boy have talent? Pursed lips, a shrug, then a nod, and a new artist is welcomed. His brave heart flying through the streets, on a journey unknowable. Known for both his paintings and stained-glass windows, Marc Chagall rose from humble beginnings to become one of the world's most renowned artists. Admired for his use of color and the powerful emotion in his work, Chagall led a career that spanned decades and continents, and he never stopped growing. This lyrical narrative shows readers, through many different windows, the pre-WWI childhood and wartime experiences that shaped Chagall's path. From the same team behind the Caldecott Honor Book The Noisy Paint Box, which was about the artist Kandinksy, Through the Window is a stunning book that, through Chagall's life and work, demonstrates how art has the power to be revolutionary.

Book excerpt: “Gutsy, funny, risky and wise, full of dazzling late-night insight, in-the-middle-of-everything epiphanies, moments of sheer honesty blooming into gut truths.” —Marlon James, Booker Prize–winning author Aminatta Forna is one of our most important literary voices, and her novels have won the Windham Campbell Prize and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book. In this elegantly rendered and wide-ranging collection of new and previously published essays, Forna writes intimately about displacement, trauma and memory, love, and how we coexist and encroach on the non-human world. Movement is a constant here. In the title piece, “The Window Seat,” she reveals the unexpected enchantments of commercial air travel. In “Obama and the Renaissance Generation,” she documents how, despite the narrative of Obama’s exceptionalism, his father, like her own, was one of a generation of gifted young Africans who came to the United Kingdom and the United States for education and were expected to build their home countries anew after colonialism. In “The Last Vet,” time spent shadowing Dr. Jalloh, the only veterinarian in Sierra Leone, as he works with the street dogs of Freetown, becomes a meditation on what a society’s treatment of animals tells us about its principles. In “Crossroads,” she examines race in America from an African perspective, and in “Power Walking” she describes what it means to walk in the world in a Black woman’s body and in “The Watch” she explores the raptures of sleep and sleeplessness the world over. Deeply meditative and written with a wry humor, The Window Seat confirms that Forna is “a compelling essayist . . . her voice direct, lucid, and fearless” (Claire Messud, Harper’s Magazine).

Perfect for fans of Oliver Sachs's Musicophilia, Irvin Yalom's Creatures of a Day and Stephen Grosz's The Examined Life.

This book was released on 2010-05-24 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No Pot, No Window is a true story about my life starting in the year 1951 when I was born in Marshall, Texas, to poor, uneducated parents. This book is intended to be a motivator and inspiration to all the people struggling to survive financially as I did for the majority of my life. The expression ?no pot, no window? means you are so poor that you don?t have a pot to pee in or a window to throw it out. I believe poverty, lack of education, a negative home environment, alcohol and/or drug abuse, bad judgment, a single parent home, disease/illness, and sometimes just plain bad luck keeps the syndrome of ?no pot, no window? perpetuating generation after generation. My abusive alcoholic father abandoned my two sisters and me when I was nine years old, and my codependent mother was absent from my life for many years. After my father left and my parents divorced, my mother spent the rest of her life looking for another husband to support her. She was married nine times and never did find her Prince Charming, just another drunk she met at a bar and dragged home. When I was ten years old, my mother sent my two sisters and me to live with her parents for over three years, and during this period she was completely absent from our lives. My maternal grandparents, who were survivors of the Great Depression of 1929, were very tight with their money and affection. They really did not want to raise three young children but decided we would be a valuable asset as farmhands on their five-acre farm. My mother came back into my life when I was thirteen years old and the saga of stepfathers began. At the age of sixteen, I had a job, a car, and was self-sufficient. Unfortunately, I was also a juvenile delinquent because I had little or no parental supervision. For lack of any other options, I joined the military in 1969, during the height of the Vietnam War, and began the long journey of becoming an adult. Due to my immaturity and poor judgment, I was married and divorced three times before the age of thirty and became a single parent to my only child. When I was thirty-two years old, I was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer and spent the next five years struggling to stay alive physically and financially. With the assistance of the military, I was able to obtain my bachelor of arts degree from the University of Mississippi in 1982 and a masters of forensic science from George Washington University in 1986. After twenty-one years of active duty service, I subsequently retired as a lieutenant from the United States Navy in 1993. I refused to accept and was able to overcome the ?no pot, no window? plight because of my perseverance, hard work, and most importantly, advanced education. I changed my life from sour lemons to sweet lemonade!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this jet age, people are closer to their computers, iPods, and iPhones than to God, their creator. In the Old Testament, God put in place prophets to guide His people; and under the covenant of grace, the Holy Spirit educates and teaches all things. Rather than seek help through the Holy Spirit, people are moving farther away from God by wanting to do things in their own way. Earthly wisdom always leads people astray. That is further reason why there is no peace in the world; but the wisdom from God is peaceable, gentle, open to reason, and full of mercy and good. In The Window of Life, Deleola Akeredolu clearly explains how beneficial it is to look at life through the eyes of God. All the materials in this book are from visions and revelations given by God.

Book excerpt: The Mirror, the Window, and the Wall: "The Life-Changing Power of Finding Your True Self" instructs us to discover the most important questions to be asked of ourselves. Who am I? and What am I? We have been consumed by what other people think of us. Driven by body images thrust on us by corporate advertising, skewed versions of success tied to monetary gains, a lack in modern society of credence and importance to the spiritual life's journey, and stereotypical molds we are asked to fit into based on sex, race, age and education. We may be spiritually asleep but physically awake, hiding behind a persona that has been assigned to us through societal pressure. Through the eyes and story of the main character we are able to look closely at why we accept roles assigned to us against our will. This short booklet packs a powerful, spiritual punch complete with body-blows and shots directly landed on the chin.If we are playing a role, and we lose the assigned role, what will become of us? These questions and others are answered in this book and are all part of coming to find your True Self. This is a book about spiritually waking up. The Mirror, the Window, and the Wall contains specific but simple instructions on how to step onto the path of finding and maintaining your True Self.

Rick Renner says, “Years ago, I didn't understand how vital it was that I sow into the Kingdom of God, and as a result, Denise and I lived sad financial lives. The day Denise and I began to give, we discovered the key that opens the window of Heaven.” In this five-part series How To Open the Window of Heaven Over Your Life, Rick covers: That God is generous with the generous. How God responds to sacrificial giving. How to open the window of Heaven over your life. What Jesus said about giving. What the apostle Paul said about giving. Get ready to open the window of Heaven and enter into a new realm of abundant life!
