Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Memoir of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Vol. 2 of 2 At the time of the Divinity Hall address, Emerson, as I said, was intending to lecture, the next winter, in Boston; and he persevered, though he expected that his audience would be small. When the lectures began, however, in December, there was no appearance of any deterrent effect from the address. "The lecturing [he writes to his brother William] thrives. The good city is more placable than it was represented, and forgives, like Burke, much to the spirit of liberty." The attendance was large, and of the same class of persons as before, most of them, no doubt, Liberal Christians, but of a liberality that was not disturbed by his departure from the Cambridge platform. They came, as Mr. Lowell says, to hear Emerson, not to hear his opinions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. George William Curtis said, A smile broke over his face like day over the sky, and, At Emerson's house it is always morning. How could it have been otherwise with a man who loved humanity; whose whole life was spent in making the world happier and better; whose every sentence was full of hope and sweetness and courage. Who wrote, To help the young soul, add energy, inspire hope, and blow the coals into a useful flame; to redeem defeat by new thought, by firm action, that is not easy; that is the work of divine men. And he was one of the divine men whose work in life it was to do this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The majority of the people of this city do not know that they ever read five lines of his writing. Yet it is without hesitation that I say that the life of every person in Brooklyn is to-day affected, and it is affected for good, by the life and the words of this Yankee prophet of the latter half of the nineteenth century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Memoir of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Vol. 1 of 2 My object in this book has been to offer to the readers and friends of Emerson some further illustrations, some details of his outward and inward history that may fill out and define more closely the image of him they already have, rather than to attempt a picture which should make him known to strangers, or set him forth in due relation to his surroundings or to the world at large. The position of literary executor to which he appointed me, and the desire of his family that I would write a memoir of him, have given me access to his unpublished writings (including many letters confided to me by some of his most valued correspondents, to whom I render hearty thanks), and to sources of information in the memories of persons who knew him in his early years and in his home. Book excerpt: "Every great man is a unique". R.W Emerson told us that Self-confidence is always about independence : "What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think. This rule, equally arduous in actual and in intellectual life, may serve for the whole distinction between greatness and meanness. It is the harder because you will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it. It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emerson Year Book: Selection for Every Day in the Year From the Essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson January First. The world exists for the education of each man. There is no stage or state of society or mode or action in history, to which there is not somewhat corresponding in his life. Everything tends in a wonderful manner to abbreviate itself and yield its own virtue to him. January Second. We have the same interest in condition and character. We honor the rich, because they have externally the freedom, power, and grace which we feel to be proper to man, proper to us. January Third. All literature writes the character of the wise man. Books, monuments, pictures, conversation, are portraits in which he finds the lineaments he is forming. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ralph Waldo Emerson: His Life, Genius, and Writings; A Biographical Sketch; To Which Are Added Personal Recollections of His Visits to England, Extracts From Unpublished Letters and Miscellaneous Characteristic Records The reader of the following pages will find in them many illustrative passages in connection with Emerson, without which any account of his life and work, however brief, would be inadequate. Among them may be named - his friendly relations with Margaret Fuller, per haps the most remarkable woman of culture of her time exercising, during her unfortunately brief life, an acknow ledged influence on the best thought of New England, his connection with The Dial, the most remarkable organ of high thought published in our time, -an account of that singular social experiment, The Brook Farm Community, idealized by the weird genius of Hawthorne in that saddest of fictions, The Blithedale Romance, the resignation of his pastoral charge in 1832, and his sermon and farewell letter in connection therewith, - his addresses on Robert Burns and Walter Scott, - and his notable speech in Manchester in 1847, in which he gave utterance to his confidence in, and admiration of, England. Among the Miscellaneous Characteristic Records and Anecdotes will be found some impressions and glimpses that enable us, by a side-light, as it were, to see Emerson almost face to face. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Vol. 2: English Traits the Conduct of Life Nature A man is a centre for nature, running out threads Of rela tion through everything, fluid and solid, material and element al. The earth rolls; every clod and stone comes to the me ridian: so every organ, function, acid, crystal, grain of dust, has its relation to the brain. It waits long, but its turn comes. Each plant has its parasite, and each created thing its lover and poet. Justice has already been done to steam, to iron, to wood, to coal, to loadstone, to iodine, to corn, and cotton but how few materials are yet used by our arts The mass of creatures and of qualities are still hid and expectant. It would seem as if each waited, like the enchanted princess in fairy tales, for a destined human deliverer. Each must be disenchanted, and walk forth to the day in human shape. In the history Of discovery, the ripe and latent truth seems to have fashioned a brain for itself. A magnet must be made man in some Gilbert, or Swedenborg, or Oersted, before the general mind can come to entertain its powers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson: Essays, First and Second Series, Representative Men, Society and Solitude, English Traits, the Conduct of Life, Letters and Social Aims, Poems, Miscellanies Embracing Nature, Addresses, and Lectures There is one mind common to all indi vidual men. Every man is an inlet to the same and to all of. The same. He that is once admitted to the right of reason is made a freeman of the whole estate. What Plato has thought he may think; what a saint has felt lie may feel; what at any time has befallen any man, he can under stand. Who hath access to this universal mind is a party to all that is or can be done, for this is the only and sovereign agent. Of the works of this mind history is the record. Its genius is illustrated by the entire series of days. Man is explicable by nothing less than all his history. Without hurry, without rest, the human spirit goes forth from the beginning to embody every faculty, every thought, every emotion; which belongs to it in appropriate events. But the thought is always prior to the fact; all the facts of history pre-exist in the mind as laws. Each law in turn is made by circum stances predominant, and the limits of nature give power to but one at a time. A man is the whole encyclopaedia of facts. The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn, and Egypt, Greece, Rome, Gaul, Britain, America, lie folded already in the first man. Epoch after epoch, camp, king dom, empire, republic, democracy, are merely the applications of his manifold Spirit to the manifold world.
