Book Synopsis A Real Christian by : Prof. Kenneth J. Collins
Download or read book A Real Christian written by Prof. Kenneth J. Collins and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Real Christian: The Life of John Wesley fills a void in available books in Wesleyan studies by providing a brief, solid biography that focuses on Wesley himself. While exploring Wesley's ancestry, birth, death, and every major biographical and theological event between, Collins also explores the theme of John Wesley's spiritual growth and maturation. Wesley came to the conclusion that real Christians are those whose inward (and outward) lives have been transformed by the bountiful sanctifying grace of God -- what he termed real Christianity--and this he strove to obtain for himself. Real Christianity, as Wesley understood it, embraces both works of piety and mercy, the person and the social.

Book Synopsis Life of John Wesley, 1793 by : John Wesley
Download or read book Life of John Wesley, 1793 written by John Wesley and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley bequeathed his manuscripts to three trusted colleagues with the expectation that they would prepare, write, and publish a suitable biography after his death. An ex-Methodist preacher, John Hampson, beat them into print with an unflattering portrait of Methodism's founder. The book was published in June of 1791, only three months after Wesley was buried. To counter this publication, Thomas Coke and Henry Moore rushed into print an "authorized" and more flattering account. Their Life of John Wesley was first published in April 1792, and the authors had high hopes for their 542-page book. By showing "how faithfully, zealously, and prudently Wesley labored" may thereby be more abundantly stimulated to be followers of him, as he was of Christ."A year later the first and only known American edition was published in Philadelphia by John Dickins who only three years earlier had begun the publishing house for the Methodist Episcopal Church. Twenty-three know editions/printings kept the book available in England until 1864. We are pleased to reprint the first American printing by Philadelphia printer Parry Hall for John Dickins in 1793.

Preaching in numerous villages, towns, and cities, Wesley and his followers faced intense and savage persecution, but their missions were also accompanied by extraordinary phenomena such as convulsions, laughter, and healings. In the course of his compelling narrative Tomkins examines Wesley's relationships with key people in his life, including his powerful and austere mother, Susanna, and his hymn-writing brother, Charles. Tomkins also explores key issues in Wesley's life, such as his renunciation of wealth and his attitude toward women, concluding with an assessment of Wesley's ongoing influence both in his own country and abroad."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Wesley and Men who Followed by : Iain Hamish Murray
Download or read book Wesley and Men who Followed written by Iain Hamish Murray and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley - Oxford don and itinerant preacher, intellectual and evangelist, author and man of action, upholder of the Church of England yet founder of another world-wide denomination, disagreeing with George Whitefield, yet preaching his funeral sermon - truly a many-sided man. It is no wonder that he has had many biographers. Most books on Wesley have concentrated on his leading role in the Evangelical Revival. Wesley and Men Who Followed is more concerned with the spiritual explanation of a movement which, far from dwindling at his death, increased in momentum, breadth and transforming power. Drawing from original and often little-known Methodist sources, Iain Murray's thrilling study leads to conclusions that are of great relevance for the contemporary church. 'Was John Wesley deceived? Have our hymn-writers been deceived in their immortal songs? Was Saul of Tarsus deceived? Have we all been deceived?' So wrote one unhappy modern Methodist. The evidence Iain Murray provides demonstrates that this was not the case. The result is that Wesley and Men Who Followed points to the key to the recovery of authentic Christianity today.

Book Synopsis The Works of John Wesley Volume 21 by : John Wesley
Download or read book The Works of John Wesley Volume 21 written by John Wesley and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth volume of Wesley's Journal to appear in the critical edition of The Works of John Wesley. Covering the decade from early 1755 to the middle of 1765, it contains four "Extracts" from Wesley's Journal (10-13) that document--in Wesley's own words--a significant period of consolidation in the Wesleyan revival. He describes in vivid detail the growth of the Methodist movement, especially in the central portions of northern England as well as the spread into Ireland and Scotland. This period contains several interesting controversies that help define the shape of Methodism and the nature of its relationship to the Church of England. Differences of opinion over the questions of lay preaching, ordination, sacraments, and doctrinal standards arise within the Methodist societies and represent the issues at the heart of a maturing organization that is stretching the limits of its self-conscious role within the Established Church. The doctrine of Christian perfection also provides the focus of another challenge to unity within the people called Methodists and increases the strain upon their relationship with the Church. The nature and manner of John Wesley's authority and leadership within the movement continues to be a controversial issue as the annual conferences become an important feature within the movement. Features footnotes to quotations, key themes, and background information. All Works of John Wesley volumes are designed to keep the pages clean and in place for years to come., with casebound non-cloth hardcover, dust jacket, and secure adhesive binding.
