From the beginning nothing seems to occur as, by logic, it ought to occur. A man of fiery, impetuous, emotional temperament would be expected to prove a strenuous partisan; but so far was Clay from being a partisan that, although he ranks as a Whig, it is not easy to attribute to him any clear and stable convictions upon any great. During the greater part of my stay in Ken tucky, I have been unable, from indisposition, to endure the labour of writing; and hence, when my health has permitted, I have necessarily written with a degree of haste wholly meonsrstent with the care and attention which, under other Circumstances, I should certainly have be stowed upon my work. The necessity of sending the manuscript to new-england, sheet by sheet, Without even allowmg myself time to preserve copies of it, has undoubtedly led tt some errors of plan and ar rangement. The same necessity, together with that of luniting the vo lume to a given number of pages, has compelled me to omit several im portant incidents in the more recent portion of Mr. Clay's history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry Clay This life of Henry Clay was begun by his grandson, Thomas Hart Clay. Other hands have finished it. Mr. Clay died April 8, 1907, and the completion of the book has been accomplished by Dr. Ellis Paxson Oberholtzer, the editor of the series, with the assistance of Mrs. Clay. Mr. Clay was eminently suited for the work of writing the life of his grandfather. He was a man of literary taste, cultivated and scholarly, and he had been a careful student of the political history of the United States. Free from prejudice, with a mind full of judicious admiration for his great ancestor, his aim in this book has been to recall to the minds of Americans the patriotism and statesmanship of Henry Clay, and to recount the charming characteristics which made him the most beloved of public men. Thanks are due Miss Harrison of Lexington for the use of the diary of her father, James O. Harrison. Mr. Harrison was a Kentuckian, a lawyer of great ability and a man who had the esteem and regard of the whole community. Always a Democrat yet always a devoted friend of Henry Clay, whom he probably knew better than any other of Mr. Clay's contemporaries, Mr. Harrison was chosen to be one of his executors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Seven Years of the Life of Henry Clay On his journey to Washington, Mr. Clay also availed him self of every opportunity to make clamorous and startling appeals to casual assemblies collected in compliment or wel come to him, or out of mere idle curiosity to see and hear a man long so conspicuous and famous. He surprised and alarm ed his auditors by telling them of great and before unheard-of dangers threatening the peace and perpetuity of the Union. His speech at Baltimore, on this occasion, was a particularly offensive demonstration of that sort; and on his arrival at Washington, he was quiet in his Senatorial chair only while awaiting an opportunity to attack the Administration of Presi dent Taylor, as soon as its friends made the first movement in favor of a quiet settlement of affairs by urging the immediate admission of California. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Henry Clay, Vol. 2 of 2 IN the introduction of this work, the author announced as one of his rules in its composition, that he had confined himself to the life and career of Mr. Clay, and that he does not profess to give history any further than Mr. Clay has been connected with it. He also suggested, that he has not been able to use all the materials found within these limits. It will be obvious, therefore, that wide as has been his range, and comprehensive as has been the view of public affairs which he has been obliged to take, the history contained in these volumes is rather personal than general. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of Henry Clay To almost any eye which surveys dispassionately the field of our National History during the last sixty or seventy years, the stately figure of Henry Clay will come at once and prominently into view. No American eye wall ever overlook it. No American pen will ever attempt to dwarf or disparage it. All that Webster was to the North, all that Calhoun was to the South, Clay was to the Great West; perhaps more than all. Neither of these three remarkable men ever commanded the votes of the whole country, or grasped the coveted prize of the Presidency. But together - sometimes in opposition, sometimes in conjunction, and almost always in rivalry - they exercised an influence on public affairs far greater than that of any other three men of their times. They did not leave their peers. Thus far they have had no successors of equal individuality, prominence, and power. Their last signal public efforts were made, side by side, in the Senate of the United States, in support of what were called the Compromises of 1850. Before two years more had elapsed, they were all three in their graves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Public Services of Henry Clay: Down to 1848 Several sketches, more or less elaborate, of the character and career of Henry Clay, appeared during his life-time, oftener prefixed to collections of his speeches; though one independent memoir, of decided merit, was written more than twenty years since by George D. Prentice, Editor of the Louisville Journal, and then widely disseminated. That, however, has long been out of print, while the more eventful and memorable half of Mr. Clay's biography was yet in the future when Mr. Prentice wrote. And I have reason to believe that Mr. Clay himself gave the preference, among all the narratives of his life which had fallen under his notice, to that of Epes Sargent, first issued in 1842, and republished, with its author's revisions and additions, in the summer of 1848. The aim of Mr. Sargent was not so much to impart his own conception of Mr. Clay's views and motives as to enable every reader to infer them directly from the Statesman's own words, or those of his illustrious cotemporaries - whether compatriots or rivals. His work, therefore, is rather a collection of authentic materials for the future biographer than an original and exhaustive essay. First, to present in a condensed form a complete Life, and the most important Speeches of Henry Clay; and secondly, to collect, in a form adapted to their preser vation, the Eulogies called forth by the death of the great statesman, together with an account of the Obsequies at tending _his burial. In respect to the first object, it may be said, that the field has already been occupied. In reply, we say that, although the works which have appeared from time to time, and especially the large volumes of Colton, have given us nearly all the information which we can hope to obtain whether in regard to the public or private life of henry clay, yet that they all, and especially those which we have designated, labor under the disadvantage of being too large and too costly for popular circulation. In truth bewas only a sort of step-father who at an important period gave his foster-child not only a scolding, but a drubbing which nearly resulted in death. It is Often assumed that he was the father of the sound-money doctrine because he was a fervent champion of the National Bank. As a matter of fact, he was wabbly on this subject, voting, as a rule, against Benton's specie standard, which is to-day the law of the land. His first great speech in the Senate was against the bank. It is sometimes assumed that he was the real father of the law to give the settler on the public lands a free or very cheap title. In reality he was usually on the opposite side, demanding big prices, but Offering the surplus as a largess to the States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry Clay Payne: A Life Mrs. Lydia W. Payne. Madame: At your request, with data mainly furnished by you and by Mr. Whitney, I have prepared the following biographical sketch of your husband. You will readily observe that not all the material placed at my disposal has been employed. At the time of Mr. Payne's death many of his friends and admirers wrote you letters of appreciation of his life and character and tributes of their affection for him. All of these I would gladly have gathered into these pages save that the result would have been a volume too cumbersome for biographical purpose and a cloying of the narrative by frequent repetition of the same encomium. I have therefore ventured to scatter through this volume only such letters of tribute and reminiscence as illustrate the successive periods of Mr. Payne's life and illuminate his character. I respectfully suggest to you that all the letters, used and unused, be bound in their autograph and preserved in some historical library.
