B.; Turkish Field-Marshal, Grand Cordon Medjidieh, and Pasha; Chinese Titu (Field-Marshal), Yellow Jacket Order AS so many books Of a more or less biographical nature have been written about General Charles Gordon, it is both appropriate and natural that I should preface the following pages with a statement of a personal character as to how and why I have written another. In the year 1881 I told General Gordon that I contemplated describing his career as soon as I had finished writing my History of China. His laughing reply was: You know I shall never read it, but you can have all my papers now in the possession Of my brother, Sir Henry Gordon. My history took a very long time to write, and the third volume was not published until April 1884, when General Gordon was hemmed in, to use his own words, at Khartoum. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Gordon and Lord Dundonald: The Story of Two Heroic Lives In childhood, Charles Gordon resided for a time in succession at Dublin, Leith, and the island of Corfu. Young Gordon showed few signs of remarkable promise in boyhood he was not strong, yet always ready for any kind of fun. At the time his father was Director of the Carriage Department in the Royal Arsenal, their home was overrun with mice a number of these were caught by the merry boy and placed in the commandant's house next door. His brother, Sir Henry William Gordon (1818 has related some stories of his boyish fondness for fun: In after-life - that is, in 1879, when in the Soudan Charles Gordon writes to one of his nieces, who was born and lived twenty years in the Royal Arsenal: I am glad to hear the race of true Gordons is not extinct. Do you not regret the arsenal and its delights? You never, any of you, made a proper use of the arsenal workmen as we did. They used to neglect their work for our orders, and turned out some splendid squirts - articles that would wet you through in a moment. As for the crossbows we had made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chinese Gordon: A Succinct Record of His Life The good fortune has never come to me to know General Gordon, and this little volume makes no pretence to be anything more than a compilation and an abridgment. There are two authoritative works on General Gordon's career - Dr. Andrew Wilson's Ever Victorious Army, and Mr. Birkbeck Hill's Colonel Gor don in Central Africa; which last has a special value, consisting as it does for the most part of General Gordon's own letters to rela tives and friends, with admirably written link ing chapters by Mr. Hill. I have acknowledged the quotations made from Mr. Egmont Hake's volume, which are taken only from the few passages of it which are not, as is my own work mainly, a digest of the two original works named above. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of George Gordon Meade, Vol. 1: Major-General United States Army Now that the fiftieth anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg is approaching, and the lesson of that great struggle and the far reaching effect of its result are to be brought to every mind, it has become a duty to place before the people this life of General Meade. This work was compiled and written by General Meade's son, Colonel George Meade, and is edited by Colonel Meade's son. The volumes contain two sets of heretofore unpublished letters written by General Meade to his wife during his absence from home, while actively engaged in the Mexican and Civil Wars, and a narrative of General Meade's life during the periods not covered by his own writings, together with an account of the battle of Gettysburg. The letters take the form of a diary, and relate his personal experiences, his views on men and affairs, and describe the operations of the army under Generals Taylor and Scott in the Mexican War, and the Army of the Potomac in the Civil War. Such matters as do not bear in any way upon the purpose of his work have been omitted. These letters are from one who was a loving husband, a professional soldier in the highest sense, and a man who never truckled to the public. They are written to a devoted wife, who had a remarkable understanding in all matters, military and personal, that related to him and to whom alone he wrote with perfect freedom. The narrative opens with his genealogy and early life up to the time of his departure for the Mexican War. Continuing, it takes up his career from the time of his return from the Mexican War until he again leaves for the field in the Civil War, covering his services in the building of light-houses on the Atlantic coast, the Seminole Indian trouble in Florida, and the survey of the Great Lakes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Chinese Gordon, Vol. 2 To those who set the laws of copyright at naught in favour of their own advancement he has nothing more to say than this Had they had the courtesy to ask for permission to use his book, he would have been only too willing to grant it, for, in his View, the more the world knows of General Gordon the better for the world The high example set forth in his life has, however, been to them of no avail. One word more. The author was considered more than daring in the Opening pages of the first volume for saying that General Gordon had followed, as nearly as was given to man to follow, the example of Christ. Now even the magnates of the Church vie with each other in working out the parallel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
