This book was released on 2007-02-27 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains over one hundred short stories about life in Berkeley County, SC. You will also find some interesting pictures taken here in this county. These are true stories but I used fictitious names for the main characters as I want to get the message out without hurting anyone. This book will appeal to the ole folks as well as the young and will be a priceless possession in the future. There will never be another book like this as most all of the characters have left Planet Earth and I am now eighty two years old. The subjects in each story are different. I have covered the days before and during the great depression, World War II, moonshine whiskey, outrunning revenue agents, and living through generations of crooked politicians. I was born in Shulerville, SC on August 4, 1924 and was drafted into the army on August 4th, 1943. I served twenty-eight months in the military, eighteen of these in Italy and eight of these were on the front lines with the 91st Infantry Division. We were part of the Fifth Army under the command of General Mark Clark. After my discharge from the army, I went to barber college in Greenville, SC. I followed this trade until 1947 and then began working for Westvaco. I retired from there in 1987and since then I have enjoyed my small farm and working several part time jobs. I have written one book (The Ole Days in Berkeley County, SC) which was published by 1st books on 5/13/02. I trust that you will enjoy reading these stories about life in the ole days of Berkeley County.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 1.5 million North Carolinians today live in poverty. More than one in five are children. Behind these sobering statistics are the faces of our fellow citizens. This book tells their stories. Since 2012, Gene R. Nichol has traveled the length of North Carolina, conducting hundreds of interviews with poor people and those working to alleviate the worst of their circumstances. In an afterword to this new edition, Nichol draws on fresh data and interviews with those whose voices challenge all of us to see what is too often invisible, to look past partisan divides and preconceived notions, and to seek change. Only with a full commitment as a society, Nichol argues, will we succeed in truly ending poverty, which he calls our greatest challenge.

Born into a hard working but somewhat poor family in Surry County, North Carolina; the future Confederate Captain lived a life out on the frontiers in Iowa and Nebraska as a schoolteacher, clerk and farmer with varied success. When the Civil War broke out he was a practicing lawyer in his native state and quickly took up arms in the Second North Virginia regiment; he fought in the army of Northern Virginia at the great battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg before his capture.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1995 and 2010, millions of Americans moved between the states, taking with them over $2 trillion in adjusted gross incomes. Two trillion dollars is equivalent to the GDP of California, the ninth largest in the world. It’s a lot of money. Some states, like Florida, saw tremendous gains ($86.4 billion), while others, like New York, experienced massive losses ($58.6 billion). People moved, and they took their working wealth with them. The question is, why? Why did Americans move so much of their income from state to state? Which states benefitted and which states suffered? And why does it matter? Using official statistics from the IRS, How Money Walks explores the hows, whys, and impact of this massive movement of American working wealth. Consider these facts. Between 1995 and 2010: The nine states with no personal income taxes gained $146.2 billion in working wealth The nine states with the highest personal income tax rates lost $107.4 billion The 10 states with the lowest per capita state-local tax burdens gained $69.9 billion The 10 states with the highest per capita state-local tax burdens lost $139 billion Money—and people—moved from high-tax states to low-tax ones. And the tax that seemed to matter the most? The personal income tax. The states with no income taxes gained the greatest wealth, while the states with the highest income taxes lost the most. Why does this matter? Because the robust presence of working wealth is the leading indicator of economic health. The states that gained working wealth are growing and thriving. The states that lost working wealth lost their most precious cargo—their tax base—and the consequences are dire: stagnation, deterioration, an economic death spiral as they continue to raise taxes and lose people, businesses, and working wealth. The numbers don't lie. ___________________ “When I read How Money Walks, I thought, ‘It’s about time.’ Finally, we have a book that addresses one of our nation’s most critical (yet rarely discussed) fiscal issues: the migration of working wealth as a direct result of personal income tax rates. Brown’s book paints a clear portrait of where money goes and why. How Money Walks should be required reading for anyone who wants to understand why some states struggle to retain people and businesses while others welcome billions of new dollars each year.” Dr. Arthur Laffer Founder and chairman, Laffer Associates and Laffer Investments Former economic advisor to President Ronald Reagan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can fiction teach us how to live? This study offers a fresh take on the North American short story, exploring how the genre has engaged in the construction and circulation of 'life knowledge'. Echoing the resurgence of short story scholarship in recent years, it thus contributes a genre-focused perspective to the growing field of 'literature and knowledge' studies. Drawing on stories from the late 19th century to the present by authors such as Henry James, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Eudora Welty, Junot Díaz, and Alice Munro, Michael Basseler examines how knowledge about life and how to live it is generically constituted and, vice versa, how literary genres such as the short story are embedded in broader cultural frameworks of knowledge production.
