Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The books in the Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series demonstrate the University Press of Florida’s long history of publishing Latin American and Caribbean studies titles that connect in and through Florida, highlighting the connections between the Sunshine State and its neighboring islands. Books in this series show how early explorers found and settled Florida and the Caribbean. They tell the tales of early pioneers, both foreign and domestic. They examine topics critical to the area such as travel, migration, economic opportunity, and tourism. They look at the growth of Florida and the Caribbean and the attendant pressures on the environment, culture, urban development, and the movement of peoples, both forced and voluntary. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series gathers the rich data available in these architectural, archaeological, cultural, and historical works, as well as the travelogues and naturalists’ sketches of the area in prior to the twentieth century, making it accessible for scholars and the general public alike. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, under the Humanities Open Books program.

Book excerpt: Diane Alters' profound encounter with loss-the murder of her son-creates a strange fecundity. How do we carry what is unbearable, nurturing grief until, through endless labor, it gives birth to something else? These poems groan with creation, opening to compassion on all the disappeared of the world, all the Trayvon Martins, all the school children killed in endless shootings. And still, this is a work of great nakedness in which the poet bares and bears herself in witness to the life of her radiant son. "If I still had faith, would I be pain-free?" she asks. No, the pain will remain, but these poems effect a transposition, a birth, that makes pain generative, honest-an intimacy that honors and accompanies the loss. -ELIZABETH ROBINSON, author of On Ghosts What does it mean to write at the aperture of grief? Diane Alters' Breath, Suspended answers just this in her gorgeously crafted elegy that captures the life and loss of her son, Mando. These poems, which bridge the gap between the United States and Mexico City, show us how small and how tremendously large the distance between two bodies can be. The aperture, the space through which light passes, becomes the heart of these gut-wrenching poems. Her work gathers us on the brink between stasis and motion, between wound and breath. As Alters writes, "Vallejo gave me / an almost indecipherable word: empozarse, / a verb that puts water in an eye / and leaves it just under the rim." -ANDREA REXILIUS, author of Sister Urn

Book excerpt: An experimental novel which remained unpublished for years, Visions of Cody is Kerouac's fascinating examination of his own New York life, in a collection of colourful stream-of-consciousness essays. Transcribing taped conversations between members of their group as they took drugs and drank, this book reveals an intimate portrait of people caught up in destructive relationships with substances, and one another. Always fixated by Neal Cassady - the Cody of the title, renamed for the book along with Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs - Kerouac also explores the feelings he had for a man who would inspire much of his work.

Book excerpt: Santería represents the first in-depth, scholarly account of a profound way of wisdom that is growing in importance in America today. A professional academic and himself a participant in the Santería community of the Bronx for several years, Joseph Murphy offers a powerful description and insightful analysis of this African/Cuban religion. He traces the survival of an ancient spiritual path from its West African Yoruba origins, through nearly two centuries of slavery in the New World, to its presence in the urban centers of the United States, where it continues to inspire seekers with its compelling vision.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteenth century, the Cuban economy rested on the twin pillars of sugar and slaves. Slavery was abolished in 1886, but, one hundred years later, Cuban authors were still writing antislavery narratives. William Luis explores this seeming paradox in his groundbreaking study Literary Bondage, asking why this literary genre has remained a viable means of expression. Applying Foucault's theory of counter-discourse to a vast body of antislavery literature, Luis shows how these narratives have always served to undermine the foundations of slavery, to protest the marginalized status of blacks in Cuban society, and to rewrite the canon of "acceptable" history and literature. He finds that emancipation did not end the need for such counter-discourse and reveals how the antislavery narrative continues to provide a forum for voices that have been silenced by the dominant culture. In addition to such well-known works as Cecilia Valdés, The Kingdom of This World, and The Autobiography of a Runaway Slave, Luis draws on many literary works outside the familiar canon, including Romualdo, uno de tantos, Aponte, SofíaLa familia Unzúazu, El negrero, and Los guerrilleros negros. This comprehensive coverage raises important questions about the process of canon-formation and brings to light Cuba's rich heritage of Afro-Latin literature and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the headline-grabbing stay in Harlem to his first diplomatic trip to Africa, Fidel Castro has made race a key to his foreign policy. Stressing the bonds that link Blacks in the United States and Africa with the more than half of Cuba's population, Castro has used race to embarrass his chief enemy and to cement allies not only with Africa but with the entire Third World. He has turned those alliances into so many bargaining chips to gain power within the Communist bloc. This is not simply a scholarly book; it is a moving book. No one has so capably unveiled the central tragedy of Cuban history, a denial of racism that guarantees it survival. The double drama of Cuba's own history and its foreign policy is a drama painfully, articulately and powerfully presented by Carlos Moore.
