Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the details of village life came from my own personal experiences. When, at the beginning of the war, my parents moved to a suburb of Leeds, called Lower Wortley it had just been incorporated into the boundaries of the city but still retained a lot of the air of a village about it. We, my family and I, lived in a small leaky sandstone cottage, one of seven, halfway up a hill. Right behind us there was a smallholding, where the farmer raised chickens, ducks and pigs. On the opposite side of the road we lived on, there was a row of rather grand four story houses, at the head of rather long equally grand gardens. The owners of which looked with distain upon their neighbors across the way. At the top of the hill was another group of houses set in a circle with a Methodist Chapel in their midst and the whole area was referred to as the Bull Ring. At the bottom of the hill was the main road into Leeds. Here was the Tram terminus, (Public Transport) with a switch over line to facilitate change over to the inbound line. It was a seriously bleak time, when Britain was on the defensive, and looked as though it was about to be invaded by the Germans at any time. So we sang songs to cheer ourselves up. “There’ll be blue birds over the white cliffs of Dover.” “There’ll always be an England, and England shall be free.” And silly songs like “I’m going to hang out the washing on the Siegfried Line. (A line of fortifications on the German border) So when I wrote “Little Miracles,” and compiled “An Englishman’s tales of a small Yorkshire village,” to go with it and I incorporated many of my experiences from this time. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over a period of more than 150 years between the late eighteenth century and the 1930s the South Yorkshire rural landscape was transformed by coal mining and the movement of coal. But it was not just the development of collieries, canals and railways that caused this transformation. The population of the coalfield grew at a phenomenal rate and the new mining population, many of them migrants from other parts of the country, had to be housed near to the collieries where they worked. Small residential colonies were built near the new collieries, existing rural villages expanded, new satellite villages were established and completely new mining communities were created, the later ones carefully planned and laid out in the form of geometrically designed estates. This copiously illustrated book explores the history of the physical and social development of these very varied mining communities, drawing on a wide variety of sources. It is the first book to cover this subject and includes topics such as the settlement that was specifically built for blackleg miners, the development in one village of a large Welsh-speaking colony, how Earl Fitzwilliam housed his colliers and their families and the views of well-known writers like Fred Kitchen, Roger Dataller and George Orwell on the colliery villages. The book will be of great interest not only to readers living in South Yorkshire but also to the descendants of South Yorkshire miners now living in other parts of the country and elsewhere.

Book excerpt: The close friendship between Charlotte Brontë and Mary Taylor began in boarding school and lasted for the rest of their lives. It was Mary Taylor, in fact, who inspired Brontë to leave her oppressive parsonage home and go to Brussels, the eventual setting for her novel, Villette. Mary herself led a much less restricted life, especially in her later years as a feminist essayist who strongly urged women to consider their "first duty" to be working to support themselves. In Miss Miles, her only novel, Taylor breaks with tradition by creating a profoundly feminist and morally intense work which depicts women's friendships as sustaining life and sanity through all of the vicissitudes of Victorian womanhood. She also introduces an innovative narrative form which Janet Murray (who has written an introduction for this edition) calls a "feminist bildungsroman": the story of the education of several heroines which emphasizes their friendship and economic and mental well-being rather than their love lives. Set in the small Yorkshire village of Repton against the backdrop of starvation in the wool districts and the rise of Chartism in the 1830s, this recovered feminist classic chronicles the lives of four disparate and individually ambitious women as they learn to find their own voices and support one another. The novel's emphasis on the healing power of women's friendships echoes the relationship between Brontë and Taylor herself. Originally published in 1890, Miss Miles has been unavailable for decades. Its reappearance will delight all lovers of fine literature.
