Book Synopsis Pesticide Resistance in Arthropods by : Richard Roush
Download or read book Pesticide Resistance in Arthropods written by Richard Roush and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruce E. Tabashnik and Richard T. Roush Pesticide resistance is an increasingly urgent worldwide problem. Resistance to one or more pesticides has been documented in more than 440 species of insects and mites. Resistance in vectors of human dise8se, particularly malaria-transmit ting mosquitoes, is a serious threat to public health in many nations. Agricultural productivity is jeopardized because of widespread resistance in crop and livestock pests. Serious resistance problems are also evident in pests of the urban environ ment, most notably cockroaches. Better understanding of pesticide resistance is needed to devise techniques for managing resistance (Le. , slowing, preventing, or reversing development of resistance in pests and promoting it in beneficial natural enemies). At the same time, resistance is a dramatic example of evolution. Knowledge of resistance can thus provide fundamental insights into evolution, genetics, physiology, and ecology. Resistance management can help to reduce the harmful effects of pesticides by decreasing rates of pesticide use and prolonging the efficacy of environmentally safe pesticides. In response to resistance problems, the concentration or frequency of pesticide applications is often increased. Effective resistance management would reduce this type of increased pesticide use. Improved monitoring of resis tance would also decrease the number of ineffective pesticide applications that are made when a resistance problem exists but has not been diagnosed. Resistance often leads to replacement of one pesticide with another that is more expensive and less compatible with alternative controls.
Book Synopsis Nematodes as Biocontrol Agents by : Parwinder S. Grewal
Download or read book Nematodes as Biocontrol Agents written by Parwinder S. Grewal and published by C A B International. This book was released on 2008 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to document and illustrate the major developments in the use of nematodes for biological control of insects and slugs. It has three major sections covering entomopathogenic nematodes, entomophilic nematodes, and slug-parasitic nematodes. Each of these sections dicusses biology, commercial production, formulation and quality control, application technology, strategy and safety. Separate chapters are devoted to the application of nematodes in different cropping systems, and the efficacy of nematodes against specific pests. Potential of predatory nematodes to control plant-parasitic nematodes and mycophagous nematodes to control fungal pathogens is also reviewed. This book was first published as a hardback in 2005. Now new in paperback.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Pest Management in Organic Farming by : Vincenzo Vacante

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an up-to-date and comprehensive reference covering pest management in organic farming in major crops of the world. General introductory chapters explore the management of crops to prevent pest outbreaks, plant protection tools in organic farming, and natural enemies and pest control. The remaining chapters are crop-based and discuss geographic distribution, economic importance and key pests. For each pest the fundamental aspects of its bio-ecology and the various methods of control are presented. Understanding of the scientific content is facilitated with practical advice, tables and diagrams, helping users to apply the theories and recommendations. This is an essential resource for researchers and extension workers in crop protection, integrated pest management and biocontrol, and organic farming systems.
Book Synopsis Crop Production and Global Environmental Issues by : Khalid Rehman Hakeem
Download or read book Crop Production and Global Environmental Issues written by Khalid Rehman Hakeem and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meeting the world’s food security challenge will require a multi-national, collaborative effort to integrate the best research from science, engineering and socioeconomics so that technological advances can bring benefits where they are most needed. The present book covers the effect of major environmental problems on crop production and how to cope with these issues for sustainable agriculture and improvements of crops. The world’s population is predicted to hit 9.6 Billion by 2050, up from today’s total of nearly 7.3 Billion, and with it food demand is predicted to increase substantially. The post-war ‘second agricultural revolution’ in developed countries, and the ‘green revolution’ in developing nations in the mid- 1960s converted agricultural practices and elevated crop yields spectacularly, but the outcome is levelling off and will not meet projected demand. Simultaneously, crop production is affected by many other factors, including industrial pollution, overuse of fertilizers and insecticides, heavy metal and radiation stresses etc. It has been noted that many pests are becoming resistant to insecticides. Estimates vary, but around 25% of crops can be lost to pests and diseases. Climate change associated with agriculture is also a global issue. Agriculture is a significant contributor to greenhouse gases and is estimated to account for 10-12% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Many of the issues highlighted are global problems and are addressed thoroug hly in this work.

Book Synopsis Experiments on the Control of the Plum Curculio, Brown Rot, and Scab, Attacking the Peach in Georgia by : Oliver I. Snapp
Download or read book Experiments on the Control of the Plum Curculio, Brown Rot, and Scab, Attacking the Peach in Georgia written by Oliver I. Snapp and published by . This book was released on 1927 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most severe infestation on record of the plum curculio (Conotrachelus nenuphar Hbst.) on the peach was experienced in Georgia in the season of 1920. The very heavy infestation of that year also provided innumerable punctures in the skins of the fruit, through which the brown-rot fungus, Sclerotinia fructicolo gained easy access and frequently finished the work of destruction begun by the curculio. At the urgent request of the growers, the Bureau of Entomology of the United States Department of Agriculture established a field station at Fort Valley, Ga. to undertake a study of the life history and control of the curculio. In the spring of 1921, the Georgia State Board of Entomology and the Federal Bureau of Plant Industry became cooperating agencies. The experiments were continued through four consecutive seasons at Fort Valley. The present publication is a report of the results obtained each season, together with recommendations relating to spraying and dusting for the control of the curculio, brown rot, and scab in sections of the South where these pests are particularly destructive.
