Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book uses life cycle theory to focus on the person who ministers, providing a pastoral model consisting of three important dimensions. Instead of concentrating solely on the role of the pastor as personal comforter, Donald Capps also emphasizes the dimensions of the pastor's role as moral counselor and ritual coordinator. In addition to summarizing Erik Erikson's life cycle theory, Capps addresses topics rarely discussed in pastoral care literature. His discussion of the Book of Proverbs provides a biblical foundation for the model of pastoral care developed throughout the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, now in its second edition, brings together the best available understandings of human development from a multidisciplinary perspective. Uniquely inclusive of the moral and faith dimensions of context and life-cycle development, Human Development and Faith examines the interplay of mind, body, family, community, and soul at every stage of development. It addresses two central questions: What are the "good-enough" conditions of parenting, family, and community in each phase of life, from birth to death, which support growth and development? What gives life adequate meaning as development proceeds? If human development describes the normative and hoped-for passages of life, then faith provides the necessary component of meaning. Throughout the various perspectives offered in this volume is the premise that faith is that quality of living that makes it possible to fully live. The Journal of Pastoral Theology called the first edition of Human Development and Faith "an excellent text for pastoral theology courses, because it fulfills its ambitious goal of bringing a holistic faith perspective to the usual topics of development." This second edition includes a new chapter on infancy, updates reflecting our growing awareness of cultural diversity, and a new preface.

Book excerpt: 'Pastoral Care: A Thematic Approach' offers a much needed development of the thematic approach in the study of personality as a theoretical basis for pastoral care. This approach, which includes the personality theories of Henry Murray, Robert W. White, Robert J. Lifton, and especially Erik H. Erikson, is notable for its emphasis on personal and institutional change. The book emphasizes the role that pastoral care can play as a change agent in the local parish, pastoral counseling as a model for change, and the role of pastoral care in effecting change through personal and institutional crises. Selected case studies illustrate how the thematic approach applies to pastoral care situations. Primarily a contribution to pastoral psychology, it also touches on problems and issues in pastoral theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the organization and structure of the church in America was altered in the early 1900s to meet modern demands, the role of the pastorate became more specialized to adapt to the burdens of the new, “efficient” structure. In 1920, Gaines Dobbins utilized the business efficiency model at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary to formulate a distinct ecclesiology. Discontent with traditional methods of instruction in theological education, Dobbins sought to implement theories and methodologies from modern educationalists. He adopted a psychologized educational methodology and utilized the psychology of religion as an empirical measure of the soul, human nature, and human behavior. Use of the social sciences seemed to grant Dobbins, as a practitioner, academic respectability within the realm of theological education. Both the professionalization that resulted from Dobbins’s efficiency standards, and a working theory of human nature derived from psychological models, were synthesized into a specialized system of pastoral care. Dobbins followed the new shape of pastoral theology in America, adopting Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) as the model for pastoral training. As a result, CPE became an integral part of the curriculum at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary for over sixty years, and spread to influence many other SBC entities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past fifty years, scholars in both pastoral and practical theology have attempted to recapture human religious experience and practice as essential sites for theological engagement -- redefining in the process what theology is, how it is done, and who does it. In this book Bonnie J. Miller-McLemore shows how this trend in scholarship has led to an expanded subject matter, alternative ways of knowing, and richer terms for analysis in doing Christian theology. Tracing more than two decades of her own search for a more inclusive discipline -- one that truly grapples with theology in the midst of life -- Christian Theology in Practice shows not only where Miller-McLemore herself has traveled in the field but also how pastoral and practical theology has developed during this time. Looking forward, Miller-McLemore calls on the academy and Christian congregations to disrupt conventional theological boundaries and to acknowledge the multiplicity of shapes and places in which the "wisdom of God" appears..

Book excerpt: Understanding one's personal issues and emotional reactions- one's "countertransference"- has long been recognized as a core competency in ministry. Now new understandings of intersubjectivity, mutual influence, shared wisdom (both conscious and unconscious), and multicultural dynamics in the caring relationship are bringing promising new possibilities and challenges to pastoral practice. Employing these insights, in this groundbreaking book Pamela Cooper-White offers a new relational paradigm for pastoral assessment and theological reflection. She uses the caregiver's own responses and feelings as a primary instrument for deepening discernment and better care. She innovatively combines postmodern, psychoanalytic, and theological perspectives with illuminating case studies to illustrate this new use of the self in pastoral care, counseling, and psychotherapy.
