Book excerpt: My Life, My Profession shares H. S. Gururaja Rao's story, tracing his life from his childhood in Hyderabad to the present. In his explorations of his past, he recalls that as a constitutional lawyer, he made history when he single-handedly fought successfully to defend the constitutionality of the rules prescribing residential qualifications for employment in the state civil services. Rao has continued his contribution to constitutional law and service jurisprudence with a storied role in the legal profession. In his memoir, he tells how when he was a student, his leadership qualities were recognized and how, thereafter, he rose to become one of the most influential advocates within India's legal fraternity. Over the years, he has become a recognized expert on Kashmir.

This book outlines the philosophy of Sri Madhwacharya based on his works. The first few chapters deal with the epistemological basis of Sri Madhwacharya's philosophy. The significant contributions of Sri Madhwacharya to Indian philosophy - epistemological and ontological find special elucidation in this book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is a good presentation of the philosophy of Sri Madhvacarya, complete in its architectonic unity. The author probes its ontological and epistemological foundations, and critcally examines the structure erected on them. The discussion focuses on crucial doctrines of theism, and brings to light for the first time the striking parallelisms of thought between Madhva and his Western contemporary St. Thomas Aquinas. Light is also thrown on how Madhva and his commentators anticipated the views of modern philosophers like Spencer, Russell and Hobhouse on the nature of time, space and memory. The latest researches on Madhvacarya's role in the Vedantic Bhakti movement and his attempt to harmonize the Upanisadic texts on monism and dualism are substantially drawn upon.

Book excerpt: Madhvacharya (1238 1317 CE), also known as Purna Prajña and Ananda T rtha, was a Hindu philosopher and the chief proponent of the Dvaita (dualism) school of Vedanta. Madhva referred his philosophy as Tattvavada meaning "the realist viewpoint". His philosophy is a sharp criticism of Shankara's Advaita Vedanta. Perhaps most telling is Madhvacharya's rejection of Jnana Yoga (path of knowledge) as the means of moksha, and his belief that Bhakti marga (devotion) is the only path to salvation. This book comprises one of the chapters from Bhakti Schools of Vedanta thus providing readers with a less daunting introduction to the larger work.

Book excerpt: Hinduism and Islam are usually considered to be poles apart, especially on religious grounds. But in this work, the author has endeavored to demonstrate that in spite of sharp differences between them, they met on religious, commercial, intellectual and political levels both in and outside of India. Although orthodox Hinduism and orthodox Islam could hardly reconcile, it is shown here that they were bound to accommodate each other. However, the real fusion took place with the coming to India of a host of Sufis; especially the lives and conduct of the left wing mystics of both religions made the two peoples to come closer through Bhakti mysticism. Of the many Bhakta-Mystics who strove in this direction, Dr. Hedayetullah made a special study of kabir (d. 1518) who dedicated his whole life to the achievement of Hindu-Muslim unity on socio-religious levels. So far Kabir has not only been denied his rightful credit as an apostle of Hindu-Muslim unity, but he has also been misunderstood by many. In the present work, he is shown to have gained the place of honor between the two religions as a mediator and a harmonizer. His efforts were crowned with success-the resultant Indo-Islamic culture and civilization is a living proof.

Book excerpt: A widely-accepted explanation for India’s national unity is a narrative called the bhakti movement—poet-saints singing bhakti from India’s southern tip to the Himalayas between 600 and 1600. John Hawley shows that this narrative, with its political overtones, was created by the early-twentieth-century circle around Rabindranath Tagore in Bengal.
