Book Synopsis Finding My Pole Star by : Major General James Dozier
Download or read book Finding My Pole Star written by Major General James Dozier and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: December 17, 2021, marks the 40th anniversary of the kidnapping of then Brigadier General James Lee Dozier in Verona, Italy by Red Brigade terrorists. Dozier was held captive for 42 days before being rescued by a special operations team -- a news story that made front-page headlines around the world. At the moment news of his rescue broke, everyone was asking: How did he manage to survive this? The source of that resilience is the compelling story that unfolds in Finding My Pole Star, an inspiring message as timely today as it was four decades ago. Major General James Lee Dozier retired from military service after serving 35 years with the U.S. Army and NATO in the United States, Europe and Asia. In his new memoir, Finding My Pole Star, this American hero recalls the traumatic kidnapping, his military leadership career, his civilian life as a successful business executive and his active community volunteerism. He inspires us with the timeless values that have guided his life of duty, honor, country and faith -- values that can help each of us as we thrive while facing our own fears. "This book is a must-read account of a highly accomplished and effective leader in both military and community pursuits," Rear Admiral A. Scott Logan, U.S. Navy (retired) writes in endorsing the book. "It provides a road map for all individuals who desire to develop and pursue their own life-long Pole Star as their guiding light for an ethical, meaningful and successful life of service to God, community and all mankind." "Rock solid integrity and common-sense advice, sprinkled with a sense of humor, define this superb soldier," writes Brigadier General John "Doc" Bahnsen, U.S. Army (retired). Among the stories General Dozier tells in this book are his journey from a tiny high school and junior college eventually to the halls of West Point; his service in Vietnam with Col. George S. Patton III, the son of the famous World War II general; his appearance on the front cover of the inspirational magazine Guideposts; and his later-in-life career in agriculture as a citrus grower in Florida. Through it all, General Dozier tells us, he was guided by his "pole star," a reference to the ability of mariners since ancient times to navigate using the stars in the heavens to guide them. "As it gave comfort to the mariner, it is also a directional pointer to one's life and ... represents ethics, morality, and religious values and beliefs," Dozier's friend and editor Commander Douglas B. Quelch, U.S. Navy (retired) writes in the book's opening pages. In his endorsement of Finding My Pole Star, Admiral Logan concludes simply "This is a book for these times!"

Book Synopsis Major General Isaac Ridgeway Trimble by : Leslie R. Tucker
Download or read book Major General Isaac Ridgeway Trimble written by Leslie R. Tucker and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2005-07-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major General Isaac Ridgeway Trimble, one of the oldest and more eccentric officers involved in the Civil War, made himself a favorite of Stonewall Jackson through his courage and stubborn energy. Born to a Quaker family, Trimble spent his childhood on the American frontier. After graduating from West Point, he served in the Old Army and then involved himself with the growing railroad industry of the 1830s, living at the forefront of American modernization. As the war began, he sided with the South, burning railroad bridges north of Baltimore to deny Washington the support of Union troops, and then moving to Virginia. He enlisted in the Engineers and constructed battery emplacements. Commissioned brigadier general in late 1861, Trimble distinguished himself at Cross Keys, Gaines's Mill, Manassas, and Gettysburg; was involved in the Baltimore riots; and spent time as a prisoner on Johnson's Island. This biography covers Trimble's personal life and career with both the railroad and the military. Simultaneously, it serves as a case study of an American who chose to side with the South. Before the war, Trimble traveled freely between states and showed no early indication of a regional attachment. The work uses Abraham Maslow's motivation model, the hierarchy of needs, to reconcile Trimble's self-interest with his need to belong to a community. It also raises various questions related to Southern history, including community identity, modernization, and the concept of the "New South."
Book Synopsis Major General James A. Ulio by : Alan E. Mesches
Download or read book Major General James A. Ulio written by Alan E. Mesches and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first biography of the man who served as the U.S. Army’s chief administrative officer from 1942 to 1946 and helped the Allies win World War II. Major General James A. Ulio helped win World War II, though his war was fought from the desk. As adjutant-general throughout the war years, many American families would have recognized his name from one of nearly 900,000 telegrams he signed—all of which began with the words: “. . . regret to inform you . . .” However, his role was far wider than overseeing these sad communications. Ulio faced the task of building an Army large enough to fight wars in Europe, North Africa and the Pacific. Through his efforts, the Army increased in size from around 200,000 soldiers to eight million—in less than five years. He advocated and navigated around lowering the draft age to eighteen. He led and oversaw training efforts that quickly and efficiently prepared soldiers. The general correctly projected that those methods would be a positive outcome of the war. His team identified the appropriate allocation for incoming troops. In order to field sufficient troops to ensure an Allied victory, Ulio had to address and challenge commonly held beliefs on race and gender. It was his order in 1944 that ended segregation on military transportation and in recreational facilities on Army posts. Through radio addresses, newspaper interviews, and public appearances, Ulio became the face of the Army during the war. He served as troop morale booster, advocate, and cheerleader for the war effort. Finally, he led demobilization planning to bring home millions of soldiers after the war, transitioning them back into civilian life. The son of an immigrant career soldier, General Ulio grew up on Army posts and had an eleventh-grade education. A West Point alternate, Ulio enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army in 1900. In 1904, he earned his commission as a lieutenant, and served in France during World War I. Without a college degree, he graduated from the Army's Command and Staff School and the Army War College and five colleges would eventually award him honorary doctorates. Ulio’s military career spanned 45 years and he served as military aide to two presidents. This biography sets Ulio’s achievements in context and explores the magnitude of his part in facilitating an Allied victory World War II. Praise for Major General James A. Ulio “Mesches’ research overwhelmingly demonstrates that the general was a transformational leader, that he significantly reinterpreted and expanded the roles and responsibilities of the Army’s Adjutant General Corps, and in many ways, was a secret weapon in the success of the Army during World War II as well as today.” —Military Review
