Excerpt: ... country had not yet accustomed itself to look on Spain as an ally instead of an enemy. England would have preferred a more forward policy--to marry the Prince to some Protestant lady and aid the Protestant Elector and his wife, the Queen of Hearts, with English money and English men. But Gondomar, the Spanish Ambassador, knew how to play the game. With jests and flattery the wily diplomatist won his way with the old King, and made of Buckingham a mere tool to carry out Spanish schemes. The Prince was, on the whole, indifferent; shy, reserved, refined, lie detested the idea of a marriage of convenience, and "wished it were no sin to have two wives, one for purposes of state, and one to please himself." But he was warmly attached to his sister, the Elector's wife, and, since marry he must, he was ready to endure any marriage that might be of service to her cause. All through these slow negotiations Porter was acting as Secretary, and at last, in October, 1622, it was decided to send him off to Madrid as the bearer of a final proposal. England was weary of Spanish delays and excuses; the business never advanced; and now the dispatches which Endymion was to carry to Lord Bristol, the English Ambassador, commanded him to break off all matrimonial negotiations, unless the Spanish king declared himself ready in ten days to assist the Elector with a Spanish army, or at least to allow the English forces to march through Flanders for that purpose. But this very peremptory message was not the only one that Porter bore; he had secret instructions of a very different character. He was directed to tell Bristol that, rather than lose the Spanish match, he was to offer even better terms than before, and to promise that any children born to the Spanish...
Book Synopsis The Complete Poetry of Robert Herrick by : Tom Cain
Download or read book The Complete Poetry of Robert Herrick written by Tom Cain and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first edition for fifty years of one of the greatest of English lyric poets. Volume I concentrates on Herrick's large printed collection, Hesperides, published in 1648, and the product of nearly four decades of writing. The text is based on a collation of all fifty-seven known surviving copies of Hesperides. In addition it includes a much needed new biography, covering the suicide of his father, his apprenticeship as a goldsmith-banker, and his subsequent career in Cambridge, London, and Devon. It provides a survey of Herrick's fluctuating critical reputation-from 'the first in rank and station of English song-writers' to 'trivially charming'-and a detailed reconstruction of the original printing and publishing, just after the first Civil War, of a book which was the first 'Complete Works' to be published by an English poet. There is also a newly ordered sequence of Herrick's letters from Cambridge, his only surviving prose. An extensive commentary on Hesperides is placed in Volume II so that readers can use it side by side with the poems if they wish. The commentary gives new translations of Herrick's hundreds of classical allusions, and quotes his equally numerous Biblical ones, both of them far more extensive, and frequently far more playful, than has hitherto been realised. It also notes many parallels between Herrick's work and that of contemporaries, especially Jonson, Shakespeare, Burton, and John Fletcher, and his habit of echoing or quoting himself, a tendency which reinforces the strong sense of Herrick's persona dominating the collection. Full explanations are given of contemporary personal, political, and cultural references.
Book Synopsis The Culture of Epistolarity by : Gary Schneider
Download or read book The Culture of Epistolarity written by Gary Schneider and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an extensive investigation of letters and letter writing across two centuries, focusing on the sociocultural function and meaning of epistolary writing - letters that were circulated, were intended to circulate, or were perceived to circulate within the culture of epistolarity in early modern England. The study examines how the letter functioned in a variety of social contexts, yet also assesses what the letter meant as idea to early modern letter writers, investigating letters in both manuscript and print contexts. It begins with an overview of the culture of epistolarity, examines the material components of letter exchange, investigates how emotion was persuasively textualized in the letter, considers the transmission of news and intelligence, and examines the publication of letters as propaganda and as collections of moral-didactic, personal, and state letters. Gary Schneider is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at the University of Texas-Pan American.
