Book Synopsis Elephant Seals by : Burney J. Le Beouf
Download or read book Elephant Seals written by Burney J. Le Beouf and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largest of all seals, elephant seals rank among the most impressive of marine mammals. They are renowned for their spectacular recovery from near-extinction at the end of the nineteenth century when seal hunters nearly eliminated the entire northern species. No other vertebrate has come so close to extinction and made such a complete recovery. The physiological extremes that elephant seals can tolerate are also remarkable: females fast for a month while lactating, and the largest breeding males fast for over one hundred days during the breeding seasons, at which times both sexes lose forty percent of their body weight. Elephant seals dive constantly during their long foraging migrations, spending more time under water than most whales and diving deeper and longer than any other marine mammal. This first book-length discussion of elephant seals brings together worldwide expertise from scientists who describe and debate recent research, including the history and status of various populations, their life-history tactics, and other findings obtained with the help of modern microcomputer diving instruments attached to free-ranging seals. Essential for all marine mammalogists for its information and its methodological innovations, Elephant Seals will also illuminate current debates about species extinctions and possible means of preventing them. Book Synopsis Knowledge Management in Electronic Government by : Maria A. Wimmer
Download or read book Knowledge Management in Electronic Government written by Maria A. Wimmer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-08-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of Knowledge Management (KM) is increasingly recognized in business and public sector domains. The latter is particularly suitable for KM implementations since it deals with information and knowledge resources at a large scale: much of the work of public authorities deals with the elaboration of data, information and knowledge on citizens, businesses, society, markets, the environment, law, politics, etc. Even most products of public administration and government work are delivered in the shape of information and knowledge themselves. This especially applies to policies, management, and the regulation and monitoring of society, markets and the environment. Governments expect advanced support from KM concepts and tools to exploit these huge knowledge and information resources in an efficient way. Not only does the trend towards a knowledge society call for KM solutions, but current e government developments also significantly influence the public sector. Ample access to remote information and knowledge resources is needed in order to facilitate: Citizen and businesses oriented service delivery, including one stop service provision; interorganizational co operation between governmental agencies; cross border support for complex administrative decision making; e government integration of dislocated information and knowledge sources into a fabric of global virtual knowledge.

Book Synopsis La science et le monde moderne d'Alfred North Whitehead? by : François Beets
Download or read book La science et le monde moderne d'Alfred North Whitehead? written by François Beets and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second international Chromatiques whiteheadiennes conference was devoted exclusively to the exegesis and contextualization of Whitehead's Science and the Modern World (1925). In order to elucidate the meaning and significance of this epoch-making work, the Proceedings are designed to form "companion" volume. With one paper devoted to each of its thirteen chapters, the Proceedings aim, on the one hand, to identify the specific contribution of each chapter to Whitehead's own research program - that is to say, to put its categories into perspective by means of an internal analysis- and, on the other hand, to identify its global impact in the history of ideas.
