Book Synopsis Líderes lingüísticos by : Pedro Martín Butragueño
Download or read book Líderes lingüísticos written by Pedro Martín Butragueño and published by El Colegio de Mexico. This book was released on 2006 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Drawing on examples from a wide range of languages and social settings, The Routledge Handbook of Sociolinguistics Around the World was originally the first single-volume collection surveying the current research trends in international sociolinguistics. This new edition has been comprehensively updated and significantly expanded, and now includes more than 50 chapters written by leading authorities and a brand-new substantial introduction by John Edwards. Coverage has been expanded regionally and there is a critical focus on Indigenous languages. Book Synopsis IntraLatino Language and Identity by : Kim Potowski
Download or read book IntraLatino Language and Identity written by Kim Potowski and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-12-16 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing diversity of the U.S. Latino population has given rise to a growing population of “mixed” Latinos. This is a study of such individuals raised in Chicago, Illinois who have one Mexican parent and one Puerto Rican parent, most of whom call themselves “MexiRicans.” Given that these two varieties of Spanish exhibit highly salient differences, these speakers can be said to experience intrafamilial dialect contact. The book first explores the lexicon, discourse marker use, and phonological features among two generations of over 70 MexiRican speakers, finding several connections to parental dialect, neighborhood demographics, and family dynamics. Drawing from critical mixed race theory, it then examines MexiRicans’ narratives about their ethnic identity, including the role of Spanish features in the ways in which they are accepted or challenged by monoethnic, monodialectal Mexicans and Puerto Ricans both in Chicago and abroad. These findings contribute to our understandings of dialect contact, U.S. Spanish, and the role of language in ethnic identity.
Book Synopsis Recent Advances in the Study of Spanish Sociophonetic Perception by : Whitney Chappell

This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a cutting-edge exploration of the social meaning of phonetic variation in the Spanish-speaking world. Its 11 chapters elucidate the ways in which listeners process, perceive, and propagate phonetically motivated social meaning across monolingual and contact varieties, including the Spanish spoken in Spain (Asturias, Catalonia, and Andalusia), Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and the United States. The book presents a wide variety of new and innovative research by renowned scholars, and the chapters examine issues like the influence of visual cues, bilingualism, contact, geographic mobility, and phonotactic predictability on social and linguistic perception. Additionally, the volume engages in timely discussions of intersectionality, replicability, and the future of the field. As the first unified reference on Spanish sociophonetic perception, this volume will be useful in graduate and undergraduate classrooms, in libraries, and on the bookshelf of any scholar interested in Spanish sociophonetics.
Book Synopsis La Española - Isla de Encuentros / Hispaniola - Island of Encounters by : Jessica Barzen

This book was released on 2015-08-19 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Subject Pronoun Expression in Spanish by : Ana M. Carvalho
Download or read book Subject Pronoun Expression in Spanish written by Ana M. Carvalho and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much recent scholarship has sought to identify the linguistic and social factors that favor the expression or omission of subject pronouns in Spanish. This volume brings together leading experts on the topic of language variation in Spanish to provide a panoramic view of research trends, develop probabilistic models of grammar, and investigate the impact of language contact on pronoun expression. The book consists of three sections. The first studies the distributional patterns and conditioning forces on subject pronoun expression in four monolingual varieties—Dominican, Colombian, Mexican, and Peninsular—and makes cross-dialectal comparisons. In the second section, experts explore Spanish in contact with English, Maya, Catalan, and Portuguese to determine the extent to which each language influences this syntactic variable. The final section examines the acquisition of variable subject pronoun expression among monolingual and bilingual children as well as adult second language learners.

Book Synopsis Romance Languages and Linguistic Theory 16 by : Irene Vogel
Download or read book Romance Languages and Linguistic Theory 16 written by Irene Vogel and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-08-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this book represent the theme of “bridges” – bridging research approaches and directions across languages, methodologies and disciplines. Alongside descriptive and theoretical studies, the contributions present experimental studies addressing issues in syntax, phonetics-phonology and sociolinguistics. And alongside investigations of linguistic phenomena in standard Romance language varieties, other investigations address less well-known and studied, minority and endangered varieties (e.g., Quebec French, Brazilian Portuguese, Romanian, Galician, Catalan and Palenquero) from both synchronic and diachronic perspectives. Romance languages in contact with other languages and bilingualism, now also integral aspects of the field, are reflected in this volume as well, including less well-known cases of contemporary contact of Serbian with Romanian, and earlier contact of African languages with Spanish and Portuguese. This volume thus continues the decades long tradition of the Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages of embracing cutting-edge developments in the field.
