Download or read book Catalogue of the Lichen Family Porinaceae written by Patrick M. McCarthy and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three families of pyrenocarpous lichens, the Porinaceae, Pyrenulaceae and Verrucariaceae, together comprise at least 10 per cent of all lichenized fungi and variously contribute in a significant way to lichen communities on all substrata and under all climatic conditions. The almost exclusively corticolous Pyrenulaceae, with more than 429 species in 16 genera, are especially numerous and abundant in subtropical and tropical regions while making a far more modest contribution to lichen diversity in cool-temperate and boreal latitudes. By contrast most Verrucariaceae (711 species in 37 genera) are saxicolous in temperate and cooler regions, as well as under hot-arid and subarid conditions. Conversely, diversity of Verrucariaceae is markedly reduced at low latitudes. Tretiach & P. M. McCarthy is validated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book embodies twenty four chapters. The methodology of tools and techniques has been given due place in these chapters. Figures, illustrations and examples are presented to elucidate the topics making the subject more interesting and knowledge-rich. The book covers a wide range of topics like phyto and microbial diversity; medical microbiology; application of plant tissue culture techniques, bioinfor-matics, bioprospecting and synthetic seed technology, etc in the study of biodiversity and its management. Further, topics such as transgenics, bioremediation, waste utilization and role of single cell proteins, biopesticides, organic farming, scope of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), biotechnological approach of curbing air pollutants, air pollution biomonitoring, sericulture, pharmacognosy, characterization of biodiversity through molecular approach, etc have also been covered in this book. Biodiversity and its management have roots in cultural practices and diversity, besides traditional knowledge.

Book Synopsis Terricolous Lichens in India by : Himanshu Rai
Download or read book Terricolous Lichens in India written by Himanshu Rai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terricolous lichens, a habitat specialist group of lichens play a vital role in maintenance and ecological stability of soil crusts with reference to their physical stability, hydrology and growth of soil microflora. Terricolous Lichens in India, Volume 2: Morphotaxonomic Studies is the first lichenological study of this functional group. Based upon extensive field collections and the investigation of approximately 4,500 specimens preserved in various national and international herbariums, Terricolous Lichens in India: Volume 2: Morphotaxonomic Studies focuses on the morphotaxonomy of terricolous lichens in India. Divided into two chapters, the first chapter describes the basics of soil lichen curation from Indian habitats, presents the various morpho-anatomical and chemical techniques for taxonomic identification, and introduces the morpho-anatomical features of terricolous lichens. The second chapter focuses on the taxonomy of 312 terricolous lichen species and includes detailed identification keys and taxonomic descriptions. Written by experts in the field and complemented with over 50 color photoplates and maps, Terricolous Lichens in India: Volume 2: Morphotaxonomic Studies is a valuable resource for researchers and students interested in the field of lichenology.

Book Synopsis Lichens to Biomonitor the Environment by : Vertika Shukla
Download or read book Lichens to Biomonitor the Environment written by Vertika Shukla and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-23 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book embodies the detailed account about unique symbionts i.e. LICHENS in ecosystem monitoring. The first chapter deals with unique characteristics features of lichens which facilitate their survival in extreme climates and makes them an ideal organism for ecosystem monitoring. Biosynthesis of secondary metabolites are known to protect lichens against increasing environmental stresses therefore second chapter provides insight into various chromatographic and modern spectroscopic techniques involved in separation and characterization of lichen substances. The third chapter elaborates the criteria for selection of biomonitoring species and characters of host plant that influences lichen diversity and details about different lichen species utilized for biomonitoring. One can retrieve preliminary information about the air quality based on the lichen community structure and distribution of bioindicator species as lichen communities/indicator species provides valuable information about the natural/anthropogenic induced changes in the microclimate and land-use changes due to human activity. Therefore, for identification of species, a key to genera and species provides concise information to identify the lichen species based on their morphological and anatomical characters and chemicals present. Keys provided in Chapter 4 will help the beginners to identify some common lichen species based on the distribution in different climatic zones of India. The section also provides comprehensive information about the bioindicator communities and bioindicator species from India. Chapter 5 provides the details of factors affecting the ecosystem (natural as well as anthropogenic disturbances) and role of lichens in ecosystem monitoring in India has been discussed in detail. Chapter 6 discusses the need and utility of indicator species especially lichen biomonitoring data in sustainable forest management and conservation. The content about lichens in biomonitoring will be a valuable resource for researchers from different fields and will provide an essential reference for people interested in lichens and its role in ecosystem monitoring. The book will also hopefully popularize lichenological studies in India and will generate more active participation of lichen biomonitoring studies in management and conservation of natural resources in India.
