Book excerpt: This report is based on data gathered in a 1985 survey of college and university libraries conducted as part of the Higher Education General Information Survey XX (HEGIS XX). Data are presented in 17 tables, which are divided into national summaries (tables 1-6), summaries by state (tables 7-10), and institutional data (tables 11-15); there are also two tables from the Center of Education bulletin, "College and University Libraries, Fall 1985"). The first six tables present the data in the following categories: distribution of institutions of higher education by number of volumes and by number of titles of books, serials, and government documents held at the end of the year, and by institutional control, size, and type; total operating expenditures, or total selected special expenditures, and distribution of expenditures of higher education libraries by purpose and by institutional control, size, and type; and the number and percent of full-time equivalent library staff in institutions of higher education libraries by institutional control, type, and size. Similar categories of statistics are then analyzed and reported by state and by institution. A copy of the HEGIS XX questionnaire is included. (CGD)
