Book excerpt: Situated on the Hudson River, the Central Railroad of New Jersey terminal operated its railroad/maritime complex for over 100 years in this area. After its shutdown in 1967, community advocates, already lobbying for nine years, continued their successful campaign for the site to become a public park. With over 1,000 acres, Liberty State Park opened on Flag Day--June 14, 1976. Today, this recreational landscape features the Nature Interpretive Center, Liberty Science Center, and a section of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway. Liberty State Park, in Jersey City, is the only place in New Jersey where one can board a ferry to visit Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Liberty State Park showcases the rich cultural and environmental history of this landscape's transformation from an abandoned waterfront transportation hub into one of America's most exceptional state parks.

The Statue of Liberty is a masterpiece of art and engineering. It is one of the few enduring symbols of America. But did you know that this statue was actually a gift from the people of France? The idea of presenting a monumental gift to the United States was first conceived by French statesman Edouard de Laboulaye. The two countries had been close allies since the American Revolution. But in 1865, France was under the oppressive rule of Emperor Napoleon III, and the people were suffering. Many French people saw the freedoms enjoyed by the Americans and admired the new country as it was emerging from The Civil War. They idealised the American concepts of personal freedom and liberty. iMinds will tell you the story behind the place with its innovative travel series, transporting the armchair traveller or getting you in the mood for discover on route to your destination. iMinds brings targeted knowledge to your eReading device with short information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind.

Book Synopsis Rethinking Urban Parks by : Setha M. Low
Download or read book Rethinking Urban Parks written by Setha M. Low and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-05-21 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of public recreation space and how urban developers can encourage ethnic diversity through planning that supports multiculturalism. Urban parks such as New York City’s Central Park provide vital public spaces where city dwellers of all races and classes can mingle safely while enjoying a variety of recreations. By coming together in these relaxed settings, different groups become comfortable with each other, thereby strengthening their communities and the democratic fabric of society. But just the opposite happens when, by design or in ignorance, parks are made inhospitable to certain groups of people. This pathfinding book argues that cultural diversity should be a key goal in designing and maintaining urban parks. Using case studies of New York City’s Prospect Park, Orchard Beach in Pelham Bay Park, and Jacob Riis Park in the Gateway National Recreation Area, as well as New York’s Ellis Island Bridge Proposal and Philadelphia's Independence National Historical Park, the authors identify specific ways to promote, maintain, and manage cultural diversity in urban parks. They also uncover the factors that can limit park use, including historical interpretive materials that ignore the contributions of different ethnic groups, high entrance or access fees, park usage rules that restrict ethnic activities, and park “restorations” that focus only on historical or aesthetic values. With the wealth of data in this book, urban planners, park professionals, and all concerned citizens will have the tools to create and maintain public parks that serve the needs and interests of all the public.
