Book excerpt: From a Newbery Honor author, a white boy and black girl bond in World War II Louisiana as they rescue a dog in this “practically perfect” historical novel (Kirkus Reviews). With his dad serving in World War II in Europe, and his sister working at the Higgins Boat factory to support the war effort, Fish Elliot fights off loneliness. That is, when he’s not fending off his annoying neighbor, Olympia, who has a knack for messing up Fish’s inventions. But when his latest invention leads Fish to Liberty, a beautiful stray dog who needs a home, he and Olympia work together to rescue her. His growing friendship with Olympia, who is African American, is not the norm in 1940s New Orleans. But as they work together to save Liberty, he finds his perceptions of the world—of race and war, family and friendship—transformed. “Larson . . . creates an engaging story that is rich in historical details. She purposefully captures both the fear and the hope in a world torn by war as well as the simple love of a boy for his dog. Practically perfect.” —Kirkus Reviews “A slice-of-life tale for historical fiction fans and animal lovers alike.” —School Library Journal

Book excerpt: This book will become a valuable tool for parents, teachers, and educators for the future development of the ADA culture. Educational materials do not provide necessary information to educate people, especially young children, the importance and great abilities service animals provide their handlers. New vocabulary is introduced, and dog commands are typed in capital letters to guide the reader in the necessity of one-word commands for a service animal. I wrote this book based on the fact that after becoming permanently disabled, I needed a service dog. I was trying to find books to introduce the idea to my family and especially my young son. There were not a lot of books available to explain the situation of bringing a service dog into a home to help with disabilities. I further became aware that there were even less materials available that mentioned any aid beyond using a wheelchair or being blind. Where were the books to explain to people and their children the need for service animals for people that can be visually and not visually seen as having a disability? Therefore, it led me to believe that I should write a book that shows that there are many needs for service dogs and service animals for many different people. Service dogs and service animals serve a great purpose to many individuals for many different reasons.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to take you and your puppy from the dream, (before your puppy is even a reality, which means finding the right breeder, one using ENS, an enrichment program and PAT testing, to picking the right puppy), to properly training your puppy once you bring him or her home, to build that ultimate relationship, that perfect partnership that bonds you for life. There are so many optimal steps that can be taken long before you and your puppy ever step into a training class. The techniques used are applicable to large breeds, mixed breeds and rescues as well as giants. The term giants refers more to size and weight than any particular breed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every dog has a tale ... and Oscar’s is more unique than most! When Oscar found himself on ‘death row’ in an animal shelter after being abandoned, he had little hope of survival. But when Joanne Lefson laid eyes on him, it was love at first sight: he was just what she needed to make her new house a home. Soon, Joanne noticed that Oscar’s goofy looks and delightful nature drew attention everywhere they went. Inspired by her canine companion’s laid-back attitude, his undying devotion and her own love of dogs, Joanne decided to expose the plight of the approximately 475 million homeless dogs in the world looking for a home. The result: the ‘World Woof Tour’, an apparently hare-brained scheme that involved Joanne and Oscar embarking on an eight-month journey across five continents to visit over 60 welfare organisations. Everyone told Joanne it could not be done, which only made her more determined to make the tour happen. After plotting and planning and selling up almost all her worldly possessions to fund the journey, she and Oscar set off on the adventure of a lifetime. No obstacle was too big for this intrepid couple to overcome: whether squatting penniless on an idyllic Thai island, avoiding arrest in Rome after Oscar’s dip in the Trevi Fountain, facing difficult customs officials at countless airports or smuggling Oscar across international borders, Joanne’s quirky sense of humour and Oscar’s jolly disposition enabled them to rise to every occasion. Ahound the World tells the hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking tale of a dog who uses his new ‘leash on life’ to highlight the plight of homeless hounds across the globe. No read is more surprising, uplifting or tail-waggingly good than this!

Book excerpt: Smart Paws brought a warm feeling, gentleness and love, [and] knowledge of animal/bird life. There is pain, but also hope and humor. Importantly, [there is] encouragement for others to follow, without fear. ~ Helga Milberg, Dog trainer and board member of Tucson-based Handi-Dogs. A good dog will change your life When Eloise met Gamble, her first golden retriever, she befriended a gentle, generous soul who understood the art of being a healing presence. Years later, when overwhelming depression and debilitating physical challenges forever changed her lifestyle, outlook, and career, her life went to the dogs. Research about service dogs and the profound impact they can have on a life quickly became her one life-affirming activity. The partnership she envisioned would provide comfort and support by giving her new purpose, allowing her to conquer the many challenges her new life presented. A mental health counselor, artist, and animal lover, Eloise emphasizes the miraculous competencies of dogs who literally and figuratively open new doors for countless people challenged by physical or mental health problems. This is also a story about a very special dog named Rusty. Through Rusty, Eloise provides useful information for others interested in bringing a service animal into their lives. Eloise and Rusty explore how dogs have responded to our changing needs from prehistoric times to the present. Eloises lifelong experiences with animals and her study of the human-dog bond, including research into the evolution of the dog and their special intelligence, are candidly reflected in her tales about pets and partners.
