Book excerpt: Excerpt from Liberal Judaism and Social Service Thus our inquiry into Judaism as a force that makes for social righteousness involves an examination of the present and a forecast of the future. But the present and future of Judaism are unintelligible without a care ful and loving study of its past. Ours is an historical religion, whose soul came to it from afar; it has changed greatly, but it retains its identity. A modern reform temple is a very different place from the Temple of Solomon, but the same Decalogue is the central feature of both. Modern philanthropy and social service rest on fundamental principles, enunciated long ago by the heroes of Bible and Talmud. So also the study of Hebrew institutions, as they existed at various stages of our long history, will show how permanent are the needs of humanity in general and of Israel in particular. The characteristic Jewish nose appears already in the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I shall attempt to treat from a standpoint frankly sectional a subject of universal interest. Jews are a small minority, liberal Jews are a minority of that minority, whilst every sane thinker, whatever be his race or creed, realizes the need for a deeper sense of human fellowship. It is a pressing question for every religionist whether the faith to which he is attached supplies this need. Accordingly the Jew is led to inquire whether Judaism makes him and his coreligionists more serviceable members of the human family. Such an inquiry bristles with difficulties, for it involves not only a knowledge of facts but the power to interpret them. It is hard enough to form a dispassionate estimate of the share taken by the members of our race in the world of labor, of business, of thought, of philanthropy and of public service; but our perplexities are multiplied when we ask ourselves how far their merits and demerits in the pursuit of these activities are caused or conditioned by their Judaism. Perhaps the average Jew ought to be a thorough Jew all the time, but he is certainly nothing of the kind; he is, for better or worse, modified if not transformed by his environment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Liberal Judaism: For the Use of Parents and Teachers View which is less pronouncedly liberal than my own, there are no Liberal Jewish parents who would not obtain much suggestion and help from him in the matters which I have either omitted altogether, or dealt with in the briefest possible way. Finally, I desire to state that the larger portion of my book was read and criticised by a number of Jewish friends, of whom all but one share my own Liberal opinions. This common faith did not, however, prevent them from making a number of corrections, criticisms and suggestions, many of which I have silently adopted, while, in other cases, I have quoted what the critic actually said. The critics consisted both of women and men, but I have spoken of them all alike in the masculine gender. I am greatly indebted to them for their patient kindness. My readers will be indebted to them too. One or them, moreover, was good enough to read through the whole book, except the last two chapters, in proof, and on this occasion also to make several valuable suggestions, almost all of which have been incorporated into the text. Book excerpt: This is the book that American Jews and particularly American Reform Jews have been waiting for: a clear and informed call for further reform in the Reform movement. In light of profound demographic, social, and technological developments, it has become increasingly clear that the Reform movement will need to make major changes to meet the needs of a quickly evolving American Jewish population. Younger Americans in particular differ from previous generations in how they relate to organized religion, often preferring to network through virtual groups or gather in informal settings of their own choosing. Dana Evan Kaplan, an American Reform Jew and pulpit rabbi, argues that rather than focusing on the importance of loyalty to community, Reform Judaism must determine how to engage the individual in a search for existential meaning. It should move us toward a critical scholarly understanding of the Hebrew Bible, that we may emerge with the perspectives required by a postmodern world. Such a Reform Judaism can at once help us understand how the ancient world molded our most cherished religious traditions and guide us in addressing the increasingly complex social problems of our day.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jewish Philanthropy: An Exposition of Principles and Methods of Jewish Social Service in the United States This book is an attempt to meet the demand on the part of those who are engaged or are interested in Jewish social service, for a statement of the principles evolved through the experience of the last two decades in various philanthropic efforts of the Jews of this country. It is primarily a compilation of the different ideas expressed by the leaders of the movements on various occasions, as well as a presentation of the actual practical experiences that were met in the different lines of philanthropic activity. It is intended to serve as a text-book for beginners, and as a ready resume for those who are already engaged in the field. No claim for scientific treatment of the subjects is made, but it is hoped that as a first attempt in this direction it may serve as an impetus toward clarifying the indefinite views in vogue at present among Jewish social workers of the country and help beginners to orient themselves in the perplexing problems of Jewish social service. The book is practically a revision of a course of lectures on Jewish philanthropy given for the last 6 years at the Hebrew Union College of Cincinnati, Ohio. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reform Judaism: Discourse at the Celebration of Dr. Samuel Hirsch's 70th Anniversary, Delivered by His Son, the Rabbi of Chicago Sinai Congregation This spiritual family counts to-day the links in the golden chain of its love, and alas many are broken. I look around - I, who am almost a stranger among you - and miss many familiar faces. Many a voice that erst would welcome me home, on former returns to this city of my adolescence, is silent now many a hand then stretched out to give warm greeting to the guest, is now cold, benumbed by the untimely chill of death. Where are those two so trusty men, who for the larger portion of my father's ministration among you, stood at the helm of the ship, guiding its course with firm grasp, through dangerous eddies and over treacherous shoals? They sleep the sleep of the just - planted in the acre of God - their memory blessed among us forever. And with them so many friends are gathered into eternal rest Such memories, common and sacred to teacher and congregation alike, are, indeed, strong rivets of spirit ual union; inl'the joy of one that shared your burdens, well may you claim to 'participate. And even so, many a time the merry peals of marriage feasts have'called him to your sides, and you to his. The vows of love - many of you have spoken them before him that he might bless the auspicious beginnings of your jointed lives. The intimacy of hours of tears and smiles accords the right to you to crowd aside his own children, and speak with them the words of thankfulness that he, your guide, he, our father, has been spared us to see the light of this day. And because this institution, which is exotic in Judaism and repugnant to the spirit of its best tradition, has been introduced in the name of traditional Judaism and is supported by it, it is incumbent upon Liberal Jews to emphasize and maintain the traditional attitude that all who study and strive for knowledge and are imbued with a true faith, are equally 0 among the leaders of the House of Israel and have a share in its guidance. The religious life of the community depends not only on those trained in theology, but upon the spiritual and intellectual activities of all its members. This has been an element of beauty, as well as of strength, in our ancestral faith. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A devastating critique of the presumed theological basis of the Jewish social justice movement—the concept of healing the world. What is tikkun olam? This obscure Hebrew phrase means literally “healing the world,” and according to Jonathan Neumann, it is the master concept that rests at the core of Jewish left wing activism and its agenda of transformative change. Believers in this notion claim that the Bible asks for more than piety and moral behavior; Jews must also endeavor to make the world a better place. In a remarkably short time, this seemingly benign and wholesome notion has permeated Jewish teaching, preaching, scholarship and political engagement. There is no corner of modern Jewish life that has not been touched by it. This idea has led to overwhelming Jewish participation in the social justice movement, as such actions are believed to be biblically mandated. There's only one problem: the Bible says no such thing. In this lively theological polemic, Neumann shows how tikkun olam, an invention of the Jewish left, has diluted millennia of Jewish practice and belief into a vague feel-good religion of social justice. Neumann uses religious and political history to debunk this pernicious idea, and shows how the Bible was twisted by Jewish liberals to support a radical left-wing agenda. In To Heal the World?, Neumann explains how the Jewish Renewal movement aligned itself with the New Left of the 1960s, and redirected the perspective of the Jewish community toward liberalism and social justice. He exposes the key figures responsible for this effort, shows that it lacks any real biblical basis, and outlines the debilitating effect it has had on Judaism itself.
