Book Synopsis Libellus de Exordio atque Procursu istius, hoc est Dunhelmensis, Ecclesie by : Symeon of Durham
Download or read book Libellus de Exordio atque Procursu istius, hoc est Dunhelmensis, Ecclesie written by Symeon of Durham and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2000-04-13 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The church of Durham, founded in 995, claimed in the Middle Ages to be in origin the church of Lindisfarne or Holy Island, the members of which had fled in the face of Viking raids and had wandered for long across northern England, before re-establishing their church at Chester-le-Street in Co. Durham and then at Durham itself. The text edited and translated here for the first time for over a century is the most complete and detailed account of the history of that church. Important as a piece of early post-Conquest historiography by an author about whom much is now known, the text is fascinating for the details it gives about the ecclesiastical community of Durham, the miracles which its members believed had occurred, and the place of the church of Durham in relation to the lands and secular inhabitants of northern England.
Book Synopsis Walahfrid Strabo's Libellus de exordiis et incrementis quarundam in observationibus ecclesiasticis rerum by : Alice Harting-Correa
Download or read book Walahfrid Strabo's Libellus de exordiis et incrementis quarundam in observationibus ecclesiasticis rerum written by Alice Harting-Correa and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Libellus of the Carolingian monk Walahfrid presents a first history of the Eucharistic liturgy, with special reference to topics such as fasting, frequency of communion, and arrangement of sections of the mass. Walahfrid also examines the origins of certain liturgical actions in baptism, traces the development of hymnography, and considers the etymology of various terms for church architecture. Walahfrid's unusually explicit citation of sources makes his work of particular value to the modern historian. This translation is the first into modern English. The commentary establishes the place of the language and argument in the development of early writings on the liturgy, while also relating it to the wider context of non-liturgical writings from the Fathers to mid-ninth century. The author's detailed examinations of Walahfrid's sources—historical, legislative and literary—show the lines of transmission of texts and their availability in the Carolingian period.

Book Synopsis The Development of Mathematics in Medieval Europe by : Menso Folkerts
Download or read book The Development of Mathematics in Medieval Europe written by Menso Folkerts and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Development of Mathematics in Medieval Europe complements the previous collection of articles by Menso Folkerts, Essays on Early Medieval Mathematics, and deals with the development of mathematics in Europe from the 12th century to about 1500. In the 12th century European learning was greatly transformed by translations from Arabic into Latin. Such translations in the field of mathematics and their influence are here described and analysed, notably al-Khwarizmi's "Arithmetic" -- through which Europe became acquainted with the Hindu-Arabic numerals -- and Euclid's "Elements". Five articles are dedicated to Johannes Regiomontanus, perhaps the most original mathematician of the 15th century, and to his discoveries in trigonometry, algebra and other fields. The knowledge and application of Euclid's "Elements" in 13th- and 15th-century Italy are discussed in three studies, while the last article treats the development of algebra in South Germany around 1500, where much of the modern symbolism used in algebra was developed.

Book Synopsis The Myth of Persecution by : Candida Moss
Download or read book The Myth of Persecution written by Candida Moss and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An expert on early Christianity reveals how the early church invented stories of Christian martyrs—and how this persecution myth persists today. According to church tradition and popular belief, early Christians were systematically persecuted by a brutal Roman Empire intent on their destruction. As the story goes, vast numbers of believers were thrown to the lions, tortured, or burned alive because they refused to renounce Christ. But as Candida Moss reveals in The Myth of Persecution, the “Age of Martyrs” is a fiction. There was no sustained 300-year-long effort by the Romans to persecute Christians. Instead, these stories were pious exaggerations; highly stylized rewritings of Jewish, Greek, and Roman noble death traditions; and even forgeries designed to marginalize heretics, inspire the faithful, and fund churches. The traditional story of persecution is still invoked by church leaders, politicians, and media pundits who insist that Christians were—and always will be—persecuted by a hostile, secular world. While violence against Christians does occur in select parts of the world today, the rhetoric of persecution is both misleading and rooted in an inaccurate history of the early church. By shedding light on the historical record, Moss urges modern Christians to abandon the conspiratorial assumption that the world is out to get them.

Book Synopsis Catullus in Verona by : Marilyn B. Skinner
Download or read book Catullus in Verona written by Marilyn B. Skinner and published by Ohio State University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gaius Valerius Catullus is one of Rome's greatest surviving poets and also one of the most popular Latin authors. Comprehensive treatments of his work have been hindered, however, by the problems posed by the Catutllan collection as it has come down to us. Although many scholars now believe that Catullus did publish his verse in one or more small volumes (libelli), the theory that these books were rearranged after his death means that individual pieces continue to be read and analyzed separately, without reference to their placement within the collection. Skinner challenges this theory of posthumous editorship by offering a unified reading of Catullus' elegiac poetry (poems 65-116 in our collection) and arguing that it constitutes what was once a separately circulated libellus whose authorial arrangement has been preserved intact. Purportedly issued from the poet's native city, Verona, to his Roman readership, the volume presents itself as a valedictory. This reading of the elegiac collection represents a major departure in Catullan studies. The methodological contention that Catullus' elegiac poems are better approached as a single cohesive poetic statement makes this book a valuable new contribution to Catullan scholarship.
