Book Synopsis The Rich Cut Glass of Charles Guernsey Tuthill by : Maurice Crofford
Download or read book The Rich Cut Glass of Charles Guernsey Tuthill written by Maurice Crofford and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this detailed narrative of the business Tuthill founded, the patterns he created, the techniques he used, and the other artisans and consumers he knew, Maurice Crofford has written the story of an earlier, more elegant and leisurely era. For those knowledgeable about cut glass, the development of the forms will be instructive; for others, who simply appreciate the beauty of the glass, the numerous black and white photographs will appeal. Beyond both of those dimensions, however, Crofford provides a fascinating insight into the ways industrialization and mass production and, more especially, the automobile, changed forever the ways upper-class Americans lived, entertained, and displayed their good fortune. In Tuthill's career, moreover, Crofford finds an example of American ingenuity and creative genius in responding to changing times."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Glass in Northwest Ohio by : Quentin R. Skrabec Jr. Ph.D.
Download or read book Glass in Northwest Ohio written by Quentin R. Skrabec Jr. Ph.D. and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007-02-28 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of natural gas around Findlay in 1886 started an industrial rush in northwest Ohio. Within five years, over 100 glass companies had moved into the region for free gas and railroad connections to the western markets. Unfortunately the gas ran out in just a few years, and many glass companies moved on, but those that stayed changed the nature of the glass industry forever. A brilliant inventor, Michael Owens of Libbey Glass automated the glass-making process after 3,000 years of no change. His automated bottle-making machine changed American life with the introduction of the milk bottle, beer bottle, glass jar, baby bottle, and soda bottle. It also eliminated child labor in the glass factories. Owens also automated the production of fl at glass by 1920. By 1930, over 85 percent of the worlds glass was being produced on the machines of Michael Owens, bestowing the title of Glass Capital of the World upon northwest Ohio.
