Book Synopsis Paradoxes of European Foreign Policy by : Jan Zielonka
Download or read book Paradoxes of European Foreign Policy written by Jan Zielonka and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union's foreign policy is full of paradoxes. The Union aspires to be a powerful international actor without becoming a super-state. It hopes to prevent and manage conflicts, but refrains from acquiring the military means to do so. It embarks on the project of widening its borders, but continues its deepening project which makes the entrance hurdles for applicant countries ever higher. It wishes to maintain strong transatlantic links, but continues to build institutions that make the EU more independent from - if not competitive with - the United States. In this stimulating book, distinguished European and American intellectuals offer solutions to imperative but unanswered questions: How can the Union's enormous normative `power of attraction' combined with its operational weakness be explained? Can the Union remain a `civilian power' when coping with an `uncivilized' world? Can a European foreign policy get off the ground without prior emergence of a European demos? Are national policies within the Union increasingly convergent or divergent? And how can the Union's international performance be assessed?
Book Synopsis Who Participates in Global Governance? by : Molly Ruhlman
Download or read book Who Participates in Global Governance? written by Molly Ruhlman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are non-state actors sometimes granted participation rights in international organizations? This book argues that IOs, and the states that compose them, systematically pursue their interests when granting participation rights to NSAs. This book demonstrates that NSAs have long been participants in global governance institutions, and that states and bureaucracies have not always resisted their inclusion. At the same time, this study encourages skepticism of the assumption that increasing participation should be expected with the passage of time. The result is a study that challenges some commonly held assumptions about the interests of IOs and states, while providing an interesting comparison of secretariat and state interests with regard to one particular aspect of IO institutional rule and practice: the participation of non-state actors. Addressing the regular assumption that the power of states and the efficacy of multilateral governance have simply wilted in the heat of globalization while NSAs have flourished, this work features analysis of key institutions such as UNCEF, UNDP and the Environment Programme. It will be of great interest to students and scholars of international relations, the United Nations, and NGOs.
Book Synopsis Interpreting Professional Self-Regulation by : Abigail Beach
Download or read book Interpreting Professional Self-Regulation written by Abigail Beach and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting Professional Self-Regulation analyses the contribution made by the UKCC to the development of the nursing profession in this country over the last 30 years. It details the key issues the council grappled with during this time and provides in-depth analyses of the complexity of these issues. There is a general consensus that the current view of nursing's regulatory body will culminate in a major shake up of the way the nursing profession is governed and in which the UKCC will be radically transformed. This publication of the history of the UKCC will mark the close of a very significant period in nursing's history and the opening of wider debates about ensuring the safety of the public through regulation of health professionals. This is an important text for all those who teach on professional and policy issues in nursing, giving them a factual background that has never been brought together before, enabling them to bring discussion of post-registration education, discipline and other professional matters more firmly into the curriculum.

Book Synopsis International Assistance to the Palestinians after Oslo by : Anne Le More
Download or read book International Assistance to the Palestinians after Oslo written by Anne Le More and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-03-31 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has the West disbursed vertiginous sums of money to the Palestinians after Oslo? What have been donors’ motivations and above all the political consequences of the funds spent? Based on original academic research and first hand evidence, this book examines the interface between diplomacy and international assistance during the Oslo years and the intifada. By exploring the politics of international aid to the Palestinians between the creation of the Palestinian Authority and the death of President Arafat (1994-2004), Anne Le More reveals the reasons why foreign aid was not more beneficial, uncovering a context where funds from the international community was poured into the occupied Palestinian territory as a substitute for its lack of real diplomatic engagement. This book also highlights the perverse effects such huge amounts of money has had on the Palestinian population and territory, on Israeli policies in the occupied Palestinian territory, and not least on the conflict itself, particularly the prospect of its resolution along a two-state paradigm. International Assistance to the Palestinians after Oslo gives a unique narrative chronology that makes this complex story easy to understand. These features make this book a classic read for both scholars and practitioners, with lessons to be learned beyond the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
